Rich Robbins Honored for WinCanisius coach Rich Robbins was named the

Buffalo Bills/National Guard Coach of the Week afterhis Crusaders beat Aquinas 34-0 last weekend.

Aquinas had entered the game ranked 48th in theUSAToday High School rankings.

“I’m very proud of our kids and our coaching staff,”Robbins said. “We were very well prepared for thegame and anything we asked those kids to do theydid. It was just a great job by our whole team.”

Aquinas had won the NYS Class AA championshipin 2013 and many thought the Little Irish were evenstronger this sea-son.

“Over the last10 years, Aquinasis the best pro-gram in the state,”Robbins said. “Tobe able to get awin at home inthe way that wedid is just tremen-dous.”

There was ahuge crowd inattendance for agame that fea-tured two of themost heavilyrecruited highschool players inthe nation.

“The bleacherswere full on bothsides,” Robbinssaid. “Our stu-dents were out inforce. Aquinas travels well but I noticed a lot of otherjackets and jerseys from other programs from aroundWNY. It was defenitely a game that a lot of peoplewere interested to see.”

Canisius’ top recruit, tight end TJ Wheatley, had asolid day. He caught 2 passes for 32 yards and made7 tackles on defense.

But Aquinas’ top player didn’t fare so well. Quarterback Jake Zembiec, one of the top five high

school QBs in the nation, was injured on the game’sfirst play from scrimmage.

He was sacked on the Little Irish first snap and suf-fered a broken wrist.

“Our outside linebacker got a clean shot,” Robbinssaid. “It was a good clean hit and unfortunately it had

a bad result. Jake tried to go another two plays butyou could see he was favoring it. He just couldn’t go.”

Robbins said that his players were actually disap-pointed that Aquinas had lost its star player.

“Our kids wanted to compete against him,” Robbinssaid. “We wanted to compete with the top talent andJake is one of the best quarterbacks there is.”

Mitch Thomas rushed for 150 yards on 10 carriesfor the Crusaders.

“He played wide receiver last year but we movedhim to tailback,” Robbins said. “We knew he was a

good runningback. He was oneof the bestreceivers we havehad and he madethe transition pret-ty easily.”

Canisius QBJakob Louckscompleted 10 of19 passes for 96yards and a TD inthe win. He alsorushed for 111yards and a TD onjust 8 carries.

“I think he wasa bit overwhelmedlast year,”Robbins said. “buthe is a night-and-day different play-er this year. Hemade quick deci-sions all day long. He’s been playing

really well.”Michael Tarbutt set a new Canisius record when he

kicked a 52-yard FG. The 52-yarder also ties a Msgr.Martin record and is the 8th longest FG in the NYS.

“It’s nice to have a weapon at kicker like that,”Robbins said. “He is a Division I-A prospect and I willcontinue to give him chances to kick like that.”

Robbins played high school football in Pittsburgh atNorth Allegany High School, where he was named anall-state player at defensive tackle.

He played college football at Alfred University underJim Moretti and was an All-Conference DT.

He now teaches Economics and is the AssistantAthletic Director in addition to coaching football atCanisius.

Orchard Park took a 21-12 lead after a wild first quarterand beat Kenmore West 35-18 last weekend.

“We came out very strong,” Orchard Park coach GeneTundo said. “We threw the ball well and we ran well. Theywere in a different defense than we expected. They commit-ted to stopping the run but we were able to pass to counter-act against that.”

Kenmore West scored with :01 left in the first quarter topull within 14-12 but Terius Wheatley returned the ensuing

kickoff 89 yards fora TD to give theQuakers a 9-pointlead.

“This is a goodgroup of guys thatcompete with eachother,” Tundo said.“Our second-lineplayers are as goodas the first stringplayers. There is ahealthy competitionbetween our kidsbecause they allwant to play. Atevery position ourstarter has guybehind them thatcould play.”

The Quakersdefense has beenoutstanding thisseason.

If the Quakersare going to make it back to Ralph Wilson Stadium for theClass AA title game, they will need a big year from juniorlinebacker Ron Schul.

“He started as a sophomore on the lacrosse team andhe was as good as anybody who played against him,”Tundo said. “In the state championship game, he won themajority of the faceoffs. We lost the game but if it wasn’t forRon, we wouldn’t have even been in the game.”

Schul is among the Quakers leading tacklers. He made11 tackles in the win over Kenmore West and also recordeda pair of QB sacks.

“He’s quick,” Tundo said. “He has good strength andgreat intuition. Sometimes he gets to where the ball is goingbefore the ball gets there.”

Schul has an academic average in the high 80s and willprobably play college lacrosse.

“He’s a winner,” Tundo said. “He goes full speed rightfrom the beginning of practice until the end of the game. Hegoes all out every day.”

By Mark AdairCatt-LV beat Panama 26-14 last weekend to improve to 2-0

on the season. The Timberwolves beat Westfield 27-26 in the

season-opener.

“You always want a positive start to the season,”

Cattaraugus-LV coach Tim Miller said. “You also don’t want to

think you are that good yet. We have a lot of work left to do but

starting 2-0 gives us some con-

fidence going forward.”

Miller says that his team

will face the hardest part of the

schedule in the next few weeks.

“The schedule only gets

tougher from here,” he said.

“We will hit some hurdles

along the way. We have

Randolph this week and that’s a

pretty big hurdle.”

Miller says he team is pre-

pared to face the defending

two-time NYS Class D champs.

“Our kids know what’s in

front of them,” he said. “We

need to have a really solid,

focused week. We need some

great preparation because we

have an outstanding football

program coming into our

place.”

In the win over Panama, the

Timberwolves fell behind early

for the second straight week.

“We were moving the ball

well but, once again, we had

some early-game issues,”

Miller said. “We had some

penalties and turnovers that

stopped our drives. We got it

going in the second quarter.”

Cattaraugus-LV took an 8-7

lead in the second quarter but allowed a TD with 1:00 to play in

the half and Panama led 14-8.

“We were able to put on a pretty quick drive and we scored

again to tie it up,” Miller said. “We had a little momentum going

into the half. After that, we tightened things down defensively.”

Cattaraugus-LV has a big advantage this season against other

Class D teams.

The Timberwolves have a kicker who has come to the team

from the soccer program.

“It’s a luxury when a class D coach has a kid that we can

send on the field and put it through the uprights,” Miller said.

“Down in Class D, good kickers are hard to find sometimes.”

Miller’s kicker has already won a game this season when

she... yes, she... kicked a PAT with less than a minute to play in

the 1-point win over Westfield.

Jenna Martin, a senior soccer player at Cattaraugus-LV,

decided last spring that she wanted to play football.

“When she signed up, I groaned,” Miller admitted. “I don’t

have anything against girls playing football. It’s just the little

headaches that come with it. We have to have separate arrange-

ments for the locker room for practice and the games. For road

games, we have to make sure there is a place she can get dressed

by herself. Just the tiny little headaches that no coach wants to

deal with.”

But, Miller said, he accepted

Martin as just another player.

“We’ve done it before,” he

said, “so we could deal with

again.”

Martin attended two-a-day

practice sessions in both football

and soccer during the August

pre-season in order to be eligible

for both sports.

“She just wanted to kick

because she thought she could

contribute,” Miller said. “When

we practiced the special teams

and the PAT kicks, was very

good at it. She was absolutely

the best we had and I don’t

know a coach out there that will

not take the best.”

Miller says that any soccer

player that wants to kick for him

is welcome... girl or boy.

“Those kids are skilled with

their feet and know how to

kick,” Miller said. “Soccer play-

ers are probably an underused

resource at a lot of football

schools. I’ve had two boys come

over from the soccer team to

kick and punt for us.”

Miller says he had been

resigned to just simply not kick-

ing this season.

“We had no football player could kick a PAT this year,” he

said, “and Jenna just sort of dropped in our lap. Turns out it was

pretty fortunate for us.”

Martin was 3-for-4 in the win over Westfield. And those little

headaches that Miller was worried about?

“They seem a lot less significant when she is kicking like she

is,” he said. “I know that if we get a good snap and hold, we’ll get

a point. Against Westfield, we got one more point than they did.”

Martin is an outstanding student. She is in the top 10 of her

class academically and a member of the National Honor society.

In addition to soccer and football, she also plays basketball.

“She’s everywhere,” Miller said. “If our kids are doing some-

thing positive, you can bet that she’s involved.”

In all, Martin has become an integral part of the team.

“The boys have been great with her,” he said. “She is a team-

mate and they’ve accepted her. She made it easy for them to

accept her. They want to win and she can help us do that.”

Niagara Falls used a miracle finish to

beat Cheektowaga 22-21 last weekend.

The improbable win improved the

Wolverines to 2-0 on the season.

“This team is very young,” coach Don

bass said. “We start

7 juniors and

sophomores. They

are hardworking

young men who

want to get better

and they don’t ever

give up.”

With just :33

left in the game,

Cheektowaga led

21-15 and had the

ball. The Falls had

just used their final

time out.

“We told the

kids to hold and

strip,” Bass said.

“We practice the

strip drill on a daily

basis and this is

exactly why.”

Cheektowaga

called a running

play, hoping to get the first down and

clinch the win.

Instead, The Wolverines Joe Medley

stripped the ball and ran 82 yards down

the sidelines for the game-tying TD. Jeff

Menyah kicked the PAT to give Niagara

falls the win.

“That kick would have been good from

40 yards out,” Bass said.

This is the Wolverines first 2-0 start in

several years.

“We’ve been getting a lot of positive

feedback from our

students and teach-

ers at the school,”

Bass said. “It’s been

wonderful.”

If Niagara Falls

is going to contend

for the AA North

title, they will need

a big year from

Shaolin McCray.

“He rushed for

over 100 yards both

games,” Bass said.

“He had 141 yards

against

Cheektowaga and

he also backs up on

defense.”

McCray (5-11,

175) can bench

press nearly 300

pounds.

“He’s a very

strong kid,” Bass said. “He’s also fast. You

are not going to run him down.”

McCray was named a team captain and

has an academic average in the 90s.

“He was one of the hardest workers in

the weight room,” Bass said. “He’s a quiet

leader and the kids respect him.”

Clarence battled hard but fell to St.

Joe’s 30-21 last weekend.

“I was very pleased with how the kids

played,” Clarence coach Mark Layer said.

“It was competitive right down to the end.

It was a hard-hit-

ting game and I

thought our kids

stepped up and

played well.”

This is the 2nd

straight year that

Layer has sched-

uled St. Joe’s.

“The competi-

tion you get when

you play the

Catholic schools

makes you better,”

he said. “It puts

your kids in a high-

ly competitive situ-

ation. It prepares

our kids for how

physical it will be

when we play

Orchard Park and

Jamestown.”

With the loss,

the Devils are now 1-1.

“I’m happy with how we are playing,”

Layer said. “I am thoroughly pleased with

the effort the kids are giving. They are

invested in what we are trying to do.”

If Clarence is going to contend for the

AA South Division title, they will need a

big season from QB Scott Pinto.

“Scott didn’t play quarterback for the

JV team,” Layer said. “He played receiver

and linebacker.”

Layer looked at his program and

decided that he

needed another QB.

“We had a

senior starter last

year,” he said, “but

after that, we didn’t

have a kid that

could play QB in a

varsity situation.

Scott asked if he

could try it.”

Pinto started one

game at QB last fall.

“He has a strong

arm and he is accu-

rate,” Layer said,

“but his experience

was limited.”

Pinto (5-10, 200)

worked extremely

hard to become a

viable varsity QB.

“Scott worked

really hard in the

off-season,” Layer said. “He really dedi-

cated himself to being the QB this year.”

Layer says that Pinto’s demeanor on

the field is an asset.

“He has poise,” Layer said. “He’s not

afraid to show leadership in a positive way.

I have tremendous confidence in him.”

Williamsville East lost to North

Tonawanda 41-14 last week to fall to 0-2

on the season.

“We are going to stay positive,” coach

Chris McDuffie said. “Those are two very

good football

teams that we

played. We have

Homecoming this

week against

Starpoint and that’s

what our focus is

on.”

McDuffie said

that, despite the

scores, his team

has not played

poorly.

“We are shoot-

ing ourselves in the

foot with a fumble

or a holding penal-

ty,” he said. “Those

are things that we

can control and we

need to correct. We

talk about align-

ment, assignment

and effort. You

have a better chance to win if you can

control those three things.”

If the Flames are going to bounce back

and contend for the Class A playoffs, they

will need a big year from Tahji Lewis.

The senior team captain is one of the

fastest players in Western New York.

“He runs a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash,”

McDuffie said. “He is extremely fast and

he has had a lot of success running track.

Sometimes we flank him out in the slot

because he’s so fast.”

Lewis (5-7, 145)

is not a behemoth,

but he is a tena-

cious player.

“He’s not very

big,” McDuffie

said, “but he plays

big. He’s a straight

forward runner.

When he gets a

head of steam he

can be tough to

bring down.”

Lewis is a team

captain for the

Flames.

“Our coaches

picked him,”

McDuffie said.

“His leadership

skills are outstand-

ing. He brings love

and enjoyment of

the game every day

when he plays football.”

Lewis rushed for 177 yards against

Bennett and another 80 yards against NT.

“Pound-for-pound, he is one of the

strongest kids on our team,” McDuffie

said. “He has college-level potential with

his physical attributes. He can play.”

Iroquois earned a shutout as they beat

Hutch Tech 24-0 last weekend. After

opening the campaign with a heart-break-

ing loss at West Seneca East, the Chiefs

are now 1-1 on the year.

“When we lost

to East, I actually

felt pretty good on

the bus ride home,”

coach Keith

Marshall said. “We

had played a pretty

good game against

a very good team.”

The week fol-

lowing the loss,

Marshall sensed

that his players had

a renewed purpose.

“I thought we

had a focused,

physical football

team,” he said. “I

had a good feeling

about where the

kids were mentally

going into the

Hutch Tech game.”

In the win over

the Engineers, Iroquois scored twice in

the first quarter to take a 16-0 lead and

never looked back.

“Our kids showed they could respond

to adversity,” Marshall said.

If the Chiefs are going to contend for a

Class A playoff spot, they will need a big

year from QB Kyle Seifert, a senior who

was thrust into the starting role in 2013

when Josh Pysynzski was lost for the sea-

son with an injury.

“Kyle learned a lot of lessons on the

fly,” Marshall said,

“but those lessons

are paying divi-

dends now. He is a

completely different

player this year.”

Seifert (6-2, 205)

put in a ton of work

in the off-season to

make himself better.

“He went to

every clinic or

camp possible,”

Marshall said.

“Some kids make

progress in the off-

season but Kyle

made a huge jump.”

In the win over

Hutch Tech, Seifert

completed 8 of 12

passes for 130

yards and 2 TDs.

“He totally

understands the intellectual part of the

game now,” Marshall said.

Seifert is an outstanding student, with

an academic average in the high-90s.

“He is a true student-athlete,” Marshall

said. “He is committed in the class room

and he brings that to the football field.”

Burgard improved to 2-0 on the season

when the Bulldogs won a hard-fought

game over Fredonia 20-16 last weekend.

“I’m happy that our kids stuck with it

and played a full game,” coach Jason

Kolb said. “That

was a very good

program that we

beat. They had a

big crowd and it

was a very differ-

ent environment

than our kids our

used to.”

Burgard took a

12-0 lead in the

first quarter but

Fredonia returned a

kickoff for a TD to

pull within 12-8.

“Fredonia has a

lot of good players

that know how to

win.” Kolb said.

“That kickoff

return put them

right back in it.”

Kolb was

pleased that his

players responded.

“Our kids came right back,” he said.

“They hung with the play calls and stuck

with the game plan. We were just a block

or two away. A couple of series later we

made a big play.”

Marcus Hampton broke free for a 31-

yard TD run to give Burgard a 20-8 lead.

“It was just a simple counter play,”

Kolb said. “He stuck it in the gap and was

gone.”

If the Bulldogs are going to contend

for the B North title

they will be relying

on 3-year starter

Roderick Morrow

to have a solid sea-

son.

“He usually

starts on the o-line

and at defensive

end,” Kolb said.

“but this week we

had injuries and he

stepped in at line-

backer for us.”

Morrow

responded to the

switch with 12 tack-

les, 4 QB sacks and

a fumble recovery.

“He has good

size and he can

move,” Kolb said.

“He can cover

receivers and he

gets off the ball so well that he can beat

an OL with his speed and strength.”

Morrow (6-1, 205) will be looked at

by several of the Division III colleges.

“He’s a very special, talented kid,”

Kolb said. “He’s on track to graduate and

I know he could help a D-3 program.”

Alden dropped to 0-2 on the season

when the Bulldogs lost to Maryvale 27-18

last weekend.

“We’ve played two very tough teams,”

coach Rob Currin said. “Unfortunately

they have gotten

the better of us. We

just need to go to

work every day

and try to get bet-

ter. We’ll do the

best we can turn

things around.”

Alden has

played at the Ralph

5 straight years and

won 3 of the last 4

Class B titles.

“We have had a

pretty good run the

last 7 years,”

Currin said, “but

this year’s team is

very young. We are

starting 2 seniors

on defense and 3

on offense. We have

one kid back that

was a 2-way starter

last year.”

Currin says that his players remain

upbeat.

“The kids have responded well,” he

said. “We are very young and the kids are

still getting used to varsity football. The

speed is different when you get up to the

varsity game. This is not a rebuilding situ-

ation for us. We just need to find our

character and discover our identity.”

The only senior back who started on

last season’s team is LB Alex Schweitzer.

“Alex is a 3-year

starter for us,”

Currin said. “He

was called up

halfway through his

sophomore year.

We had an injury

and he was called

up to fill in and he

did a great job.”

Schweitzer was

named a team cap-

tain before the sea-

son started.

“Our kids can

look to him as a

guy that under-

stands what it

takes,” Currin said.

“He knows what

the tempo of prac-

tice should be. He

knows what the

expectations are.”

Schweitzer (6-0, 215) was the

Bulldog’s leading tackler in 2013.

“He’s hard-nosed,” Currin said. “He’s

a tough, hard-working kid. He comes to

work every day and never takes a play

off. He’s done everything we have ever

asked of him.”

Pioneer lost to East Aurora 21-0 last

weekend, the second straight game that

the Panthers have been shut out.

Pioneer opened the season with an 8-0

loss to Dunkirk.

“We fumbled

four times and East

Aurora scored on a

punt return,” coach

Jim Duprey said.

“They had a short

field the entire

game. We were

going in for a score

and lost a fumble on

the 1-yard line. We

had 9 penalties for

70 yards. We just

made entirely too

many mistakes.”

Duprey says

that he is trying to

focus his players

on one thing... the

next game.

“We just hope

to improve,” he

said. “We need to

focus on game-to-

game and work out of the tremendous

hole that we have put ourselves into.”

Duprey is pleased with the play of his

defense - which has been solid thus far.

“Our defense is playing very well,” he

said. “In the first half east Aurora had 3

fields inside the 30 because of our mis-

takes but we held pretty tight. If we elimi-

nate the mistakes, I think we will be okay.

But, clearly, we need to get better on

offense and we need to get better fast.”

One player that will be needed for a

rebound is senior

RB Tyler Mummery.

“Tyler has been

up with us as a

starter since he was

a sophomore,”

Duprey said. “He is

our best defensive

player and is lead-

ing the team in

tackles right now.”

In 2013,

Mummery rushed

for over 900 yards

and was a first-team

all-league player.

“He is deceiv-

ingly fast and he

has excellent

vision,” Duprey

said. “He can make

the cutback and he

is always moving

forward. He has a

very natural running style.”

Mummery is a team captain.

“He’s a pretty outspoken leader,”

Duprey said, “and his football IQ is out-

standing. He knows everybody’s assign-

ment. On defense, he makes sure we are

lined up right and in the right position.”

JFK fell behind 28-0 at the half and

lost to Class B Tonawanda 35-6 last

weekend.

The Bears were heavily out-sized in

the contest.

“They have size

and speed,’ JFK

coach Mark

Ostempowski said.

“We stressed it all

week but I don’t

think we were

quite ready for it.

They were just big-

ger and had more

speed than we did.”

Ostempowski

says that he was

pleased with his

team as they have

started 1-1 this fall.

“We played a

great game against

Akron,” he said,

“and we lost to a

team from a bigger

class. It’s a non-

league loss so it

doesn’t affect the

playoffs at all. We’re 1-0 in league games

and that’s what matters.”

Last season the Bears struggled as a

lineup loaded with sophomores and fresh-

man learned the varsity game.

“We’ve matured,” Ostempowski said.

“You can tell that we have kids with some

experience but we are still a young team.

We only graduated a few seniors from last

year. Our juniors have stepped up and

taken the leadership role.’

One of the few seniors on this season’s

team is SE Shawn

McPhail, who is

also starting at LB.

McPhail (5-11,

160) is one of the

Bears leading tack-

lers.

“He’s not huge

but he has pretty

good speed,”

Ostempowski said.

“He was mostly at

running back last

year but toward the

end of the year we

moved him out to

receiver.”

McPhail started

the 2013 season at

CB.

“He was moved

around on defense

too,” Ostempowski

said. “He’s pretty

aggressive at linebacker.”

McPhail is a team captain.

“You have to prove to your teammates

that you should be a captain,”

Ostempowski said, “and he definitely

earned that spot. He has become a leader

on the field.”

Gowanda feel to 0-2 when they lost to

MGCLake last weekend.

“We came out timid and that’s how we

looked,” coach Sean Gabel said. “When

we have a chance to play a team like that,

we need to be

aggressive. Maple

Grove has a big-

time reputation.

They are picked to

go to the states but

you can’t let that

stuff dictate a game

before you get on

the field.”

Gabel said he

was pleased his

players effort.

“Our kids

played hard and

they didn’t quit,” he

said. “We’re over it

and we are looking

forward now.”

Gabel also said

that it has taken

time to get some

cohesion in a line-

up that underwent a

drastic change before the season began.

“We got some Pine Valley kids when

their program folded,” Gabel said. “But they

didn’t have enough practices so they were a

week behind. They couldn’t scrimmage and

it took a while to get them into the lineup.

We are getting our feet under us.”

Gabel said that the merger has gone

well thus far.

“The kids have been great with each

other,” he said, “but it takes a little more

time to get the timing of the offense

down.”

If the Panthers

are going to bounce

back from the 0-2

start, they will need

TB Jon McCarthy.

“He starts at tail-

back,” Gabel said,

“but he also plays

flanker, linebacker

and cornerback. He

just wants to play

where ever we need

him.”

McCarthy (5-11,

170) is a 3-year

starter and a 2-time

team captain.

“His leadership

and his demeanor

are outstanding,”

Gabel said. “He’s at

practice every day

and works his butt

off. He has an old-school work ethic.”

McCarthy has an academic average in

the mid-90s.

“He might have the highest GPA on the

team,” Gabel said. “He’s respectful and

works hard. He’s just the kind of kid you

want to coach.”

Panama played to a 14-14 tie at the

half but gave up two scores in the second

half and lost to Cattaraugus-LV 26-14 last

weekend.

“We played pretty well,” coach Chris

Payne said. “We

gave up a touch-

down with 9 sec-

onds left in the half

and I think that

turned the momen-

tum their way.”

The Panthers

are now 1-1, in

what will be the

final Panama foot-

ball season.

“This is it,”

Payne said. “We

will merge with the

Sherman-Clymer

team for the 2015

season.”

Payne says that

the smaller num-

bers affecting every

small school in

WNY is now hit-

ting Panama.

“We have 12 juniors and 12 seniors

on the team,” Payne said. “We have only

6 sophomores in the entire program and

none of the freshman are ready for varsity

football yet. Our JVs are already merged

with Sherman and Clymer.”

Payne says he was tempted to join the

Sherman-Clymer merger this season.

“But we weren’t ready yet,” Payne

said. “We had 24 seniors and juniors com-

ing back and we all wanted one more go-

around as Panama. We want to go out on

a solid note. We

want to compete

and play hard every

week.”

Panama suffered

a huge loss last

week when leading

rusher Kyle Saxton

was lost with a bro-

ken collar bone.

“He had 70

yards rushing in the

middle of the sec-

ond quarter,” Payne

said. “He was tak-

ing us up and down

the field.”

Saxton rushed

for a team-high 872

yards in 2013.

“He’s a downhill

runner,” Payne said.

“He has no moves.

Just straight ahead,

full-go and he keeps going.”

Saxton will be out 6 to 8 weeks.

“He wanted to go back in the game but

the trainer told him no,” Payne said. “His

passion is football. He’s a quiet, no-non-

sense kid. We’re all devastated that this

happened to him.”

St. Joe’s led 16-7 at the half and beat

Clarence 30-21 last week

“I thought we had an opportunity to

put them away in the first half,” coach

Dennis Gilbert said. We blocked a punt

for a safety and got

the ball back right

before the half. We

didn’t capitalize.

We still have to

learn that you can’t

let the other team

hang around.”

After opening

the season with a

loss to Long Island

powerhouse St.

Anthony’s, St.

Joe’s is now 1-1.

“We are still a

work in progress,”

Gilbert said. “Our

young guys are

starting to get their

feet under them.”

St. Joe’s title

hopes took a blow

in June when the

Marauders starting

QB Mike McCarthy was lost for the sea-

son with a knee injury.

“He playing basketball at a park all by

himself,” Gilbert said. “He was jogging to

retrieve the ball and his knee gave out.”

That didn’t give Gilbert a ton of time

to find a new QB. So he asked senior

David Archer if he would like to try call-

ing the signals.

“He started at safety for us when he

was a sophomore,” Gilbert said. “but he

didn’t play the next season. He wanted to

play fall baseball.’

Archer missed

playing football.

“He came to me

and asked if he

could come back,”

Gilbert said, “I said

absolutely.”

Throughout the

spring, Archer

worked at FS and

WR. But when

McCarthy was

injured, Gilbert

asked him to try

quarterback.

“We got together

and went through

some stuff,” Gilbert

said, “and he’s done

a phenomenal job.

He’s a tremendous

leader. He has great

physical ability and

a super strong arm. He’s pretty fast, too.”

Archer has been timed at 4.6 in the 40-

yard dash.

“He’s been away from football for 2

years and he’s playing great,” Gilbert

said. “I couldn’t be happier with how he’s

playing.’

CTF’s vision is to develop the hearts of coaches andathletes to be men of character for others.

The 2014 season is in high gear. What a great first week.Cross Training Football is honored to be walking through

the season with you. We want to encourage, equip andempower you to be an Athlete of Character.

Teddy Roosevelt said, “Character, in the long run, is thedecisive factor in the life of an individual and of nationsalike.”

I believe this to be true for any team as well.

This year’s Theme is: BE RELENTLESS. The first two weeks we have talked about BELIEVE. All

things are possible for those who believe. If you believesomething is true then you need to take action. Just Believeand go for it.

The second word we talked about was ENVISION. Wedefined envision as a clear, powerful picture worth pursu-ing. What is your vision for the team? Write it down make itplain even for others. Then run with it, work it out.

This week’s word is RESPONSIBLE: Commitment even ifit requires unexpected sacrifice. If you can be trusted with alittle, you can then be trusted with much. If you are dishonesta little, you will be dishonest with much. Athletes... Knowwhat’s right and do what’s right, even if it means sacrifice.

Athletes who are RESPONSIBLE can and will be trusted.Strap it up and get after it … have a great week!

Remember: Love never fails and love also covers team-mate’s mistakes.

NT’s Great EightBy Mark Adair

North Tonawanda beatWilliamsville East 41-14last week as theLumberjacks started theseason 2-0.

The ‘Jacks opened theseason with a 28-0 winover Riverside, the firstshutout NT has earned inthree years.

“We’re excited,” NTcoach Tony Truilizio said.“we’ve played pretty wellbut I still don’t know howgood we are.”

Truilizio said that theLumberjacks will comeinto sharper focus follow-ing this weekends match-up with Sweet Home.

“The big bench markwill be Sweet Home,” hesaid. “They are alwaysthe team to beat. We’llsee how we do againstSweet Home.”

Truilizio says that hefeels better about thisseason than any of thethree years he hascoached at NT.

“We worked very hardall off season,” he said,“more so than in anyother year. These guysdefinitely put in the time.”

Sweet Home - a team that has won 7 of the last 8Class A titles - will provide a stern test for NorthTonawanda. The Panthers are coming off a 65-14 winover Kenmore East last week.

“I’m looking forward to playing them,” Truilizio said.“They are the team to beat year in and year out.”

The Lumberjacks two wins have been fashioned bygood old-fashioned, hard-hitting defense.

“We’re playing good defense right now,” Truilizio said.“Those kids are doing a great job. We’ve given up 14points in 2 games. Riverside has tremendous athletes. We shut them out and had 6 sacks. Williamsville Eastmay not have won yet but their offense is pretty powerful. We had 5 turnovers and 4 passes defended so the

defense is doing it’s job.”Truilizio says that the

improvement of thedefense over last year isa big reason for all theexcitement in NorthTonawanda right now.

“Our offense hasalways been high-pacedand scored a lot ofpoints,” he said, “but thedefense has reallyimproved. If we can con-tinue to get the full com-bination of offense anddefense, we’ll be in goodshape.”

The Lumberjacks alsohave one of the biggestweapons in WesternNew York in quarterbackChris Woodard.

“Chris is the realdeal,” Truilizio said.“We’ve been saying it forthe last couple of years. He does so many differ-ent things really well.”

Woodard ran all overWilliamsville East lastweek. The senior rushedfor 208 yards and 3 TDson just 9 carries.

His TD runs covered24, 63 and 75 yards.

“He’s deceptivelyfast,” Truilizio said. “He has long strides. It doesn’t looklike he’s moving fast but if he gets to the edge very fewpeople can catch him. His speed and the sheer power hehas is pretty special. I haven’t seen anything like it since Iplayed college football at Canisius.”

Woodard also completed 7 of 9 passes for 79 yardsand another 3 TDs in the win.

“If he continues the pace he’s on,” Truilizio said, “he’llbe up for the Connolly Cup at the end of the year.”

Woodard is a dual threat at QB. In 2013, he rushed for888 yards and 11 TDs. He also passed for 1,533 yardsand 9 TDs.

Additionally, he was named a first-team punter for the

North Tonawanda QB Chris Woodard ran for 208 yards and 3 TDsin the Lumberjacks win over Williamsville East last week. Thesenior also passed for another 3 TDs.

All-Football Weekly team.“Chris is getting a lot of looks from Division I-AA schools

right now,” Truilizio said. “There is nothing wrong with thatbut I think he could play at a higher level. I think thatteams like Syracuse and UB should be looking at him a lit-tle closer.”

Woodard, at 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, has the size toplay Division I football.

“He’s not thin at all,” Truilizio said. “He is all muscle. Heruns with a lot of power. He’s not afraid to take a hit andhe’ll definitely give a hit. Where ever they play him at thenext level, he will be a huge asset.”

Woodard is an outstanding student and maintains anacademic average of 98.

“All the Ivy League schools are looking at him,” Truiliziosaid. “Every one of them.”

Woodard has already received a scholarship offer fromCentral Connecticut State but says he is trying not to thinkabout college too much.

“I’m trying to keep all the college scholarships in theback on my mind right now,” he said. “I don’t want to thinkabout that and mess up my game. Academics will take mefarther anyway.”

He wants to major in Exercise Science or PhysicalTherapy.

“I definitely want to be involved in sports,” he said. “Iwould love to be a trainer for a college team some day.”

Woodard says he is so focused on getting to the RalphWilson Stadium this season that he hasn’t thought muchabout the future.

“I think we are going in the right direction,” he said. “Weknew we could have a good year if we worked really hardin the off-season.”

Woodard has played football with six of his teammatessince they were small children. Woodard, Alex Molik (OL),Taylor Mellott (LB), Ryan McDonough (LB), Ryan Gilbert(CB) and Drew Krantz (CB) were teammates on the LittleLeague team in North Tonawanda.

“We’ve been teammates since forever,” Woodard said.“We’d always go to the games on Friday nights and cheeron the ‘Jacks. I thought those kids on the high school teamwere huge back then.”

North Tonawanda went to The Ralph five straight yearsand won the NYS title when Woodard was growing up.

“I thought those guys were the greatest players ever,”he said. “It’s awesome when I look and see the little kids atour games now. I know just what they are thinking whenthey watch us play. It’s so important to handle ourselveswith class at all times. We don’t want to show them some-thing bad.”

Woodard knows that the season’s biggest game is thisweekend.

“Sweet Home was 9-1 last year and they have a lot ofkids back,” he said. “We saw them at the Buff State camp.It will be a great game. I think it will be close and hopefullywe can come out on top.”

Utica College has started the season 2-0 with a 55-0win over Misericordia and a 23-16 win at Union.

The defense has, thus far, been outstanding. ThePioneers are allowingan average of 8 pointsper game and haveallowed a total of 174yards of offense.

“In back-to-backgames we have scoreddefensive touchdowns,”head coach BlaiseFaggiano said. “Our kidshave played really well. They have a shutoutand two defensivetouchdowns and youreally can’t ask for awhole lot more.”

In the win overMisericordia, JamesLenehan returned aninterception 30 yards fora TD.

In the win overUnion, cornerbackIrvens Eristil returned afumble 17 yards for thegame-winning touch-down and sealed thewin with an interception.

Eristil was named theEmpire 8 DefensivePlayer of the Week forhis efforts.

Utica actually trailed 16-0 at the half against Union. The defense kept us in the game and got us started,”

Faggiano said. “We recovered two fumbles that led toscores and turned things our way.”

The Utica defense is led by Defensive Coordinator WillPluff, a graduate of Kenmore West.

“Coach Pluff actually helps me with special teams, too,”Faggiano said. “And, we had a 74-yard return for a TD. So,I would say that Coach Pluff is doing pretty well.”

Pluff played high school football at Ken West under RichHarris. He graduated in 2002.

“Utica was in the second year as a program,” Pluff said.“I’ve been here for every year of Utica football except the2000, 2001 and 2006 seasons.”

Pluff was a captain on the 2005 Utica team, the first tofinish the season with a winning record.

“When I graduated from Utica, I moved back home toBuffalo,” Pluff said. “Mainly, because I had no idea what Iwanted to do. I got a full-time job at Baker Victory Services,

working in a group home for Developmentally DisabledAdults.”

After one year away from football, Pluff got a call fromhis old college coach, Mike Kemp.

“Coach Kemp asked me to come back as a grad assis-tant and coach the LBs,”Pluff said. “I jumped atthe chance.”

However...“During my first year

of coaching, CoachKemp got fired in themiddle of the season.”Pluff said.

Pluff said that he wascrushed when Kemo wasfired.

“That hurt,” he said. “Iwas 22 years old and theguy who I played for andwho hired me for my firstjob was out. I wasshocked. I had not evencoached an entire sea-son yet. It was a veryemotional week.”

Pluff prepared to lookfor work again.

“I’m thinking that I’mgoing be out and have tomove back to Buffaloagain.’

However, Faggianointerviewd Pluff for a jobon the staff and wasimpressed.

“I saw his passion forUtica College football,” Faggiano said. “He had a lot ofpride in his program and wanted to stay and be a part of it.I just knew it was important to keep him on staff.”

Pluff gets back to his hometown often as he handles allrecruiting duties in Western New York.

“We had a great recruiting class this year,” Faggianosaid. “In fact, every student-athlete we have had fromBuffalo has been a very good football player.”

Pluff, who is still just 30 years old, has spent more than12 years with the Utica football program.

“I’m the last guy from Blaise’s original staff that’s stillhere,” Pluff said. “I played for four years, I was a gradassistant for 4 years and now I am in my 4th year asdefensive coordinator. I’m in a great position.”

Pluff says that he is still at Utica for the same reasonthat he came to the college as a freshman football player.

“We’ve worked really hard to get the program to wherewe are now,” he said. “I want to be really successful here, which is exactly what I came here to do back in 2002.”

The Hobart Statesmen won their firsttwo games of the season, including a28-18 win over Endicott last weekend.

Hobart opened the fall campaign witha win over traditional rival DickinsonCollege.

“We’ve won thatgame 9 out of the last10 years,” Hobartcoach Mike Cragg said.“They have been a tra-ditional rival for 25 or30 years but they aredropping us in a coupleof years.”

Cragg is pleased with the start for theStatesmen.

“I’m very happy that we’re 2-0,” hesaid. “Our back-ups have been able toget playing time and experience. Wehave played pretty good football.”

The Statesmen are averaging 30points per game.

“We have moved the ball well,”Cragg said. “Endicott made the NCAAplayoffs last year so that was a goodtest for us.”

Hobart will go back to the Boston,Massachusetts area to play CurryCollege this weekend before hostingKings College (Pa.) for Homecoming.

“If we play our game, we’ll be okay,”he said. “We needed to improve thepass defense and we’ve done that. Wejust try to keep focused on the nextgame and not look at the big picture.”

Hobart has finished the last two regu-lar seasons undefeated. The Statesmenhave won the Liberty League both yearsand have made the NCAA playoffs.

Cragg is also delving deeper into theWestern New York recruiting waters.

“Section 6 is an important area forus,” he said. “There’s an awful lot ofgood football players in Buffalo.”

One recruit who is playing well is DEBrandon Ball, a 2014 Springville grad.

“Brandon is playing defensive end forus and he’s rotating in right now,” Craggsaid. “We use him a lot on passingdowns because he has a high motorand good football instincts.’

Ball is also able to get varsity playingtime while learning the position from 1st-team All-American DE Tyre Coleman.

“We bring in about 30 freshman eachyear,” Cragg said. “It’s really difficult fora freshman to get any playing time. But,the jump to college football hasn’t beentoo much for Brandon.”

Cragg says that Ball is improving andearning more playing time each week.

“The thing that stands out is hisstrength,” Cragg said. “He’s very strongand has a nice job against the run. He isa very hard working individual. And hegets better every day on practice.”

Ball is not making much noise, but heis opening some eyes.

“He’s a quiet individual,” Cragg said,“but football and Hobart are very impor-tant to him. I am very pleased with him.”

I saw Otto Slamkowski the other day. He had a scowland was chomping on his ever-present cigar.

“Hey, Otto. How ya doin’?”He gave a resigned sigh and shook his head.“What’s the matter, now?” I asked.“Oh, my wife got a computer a few weeks ago,” he said.

“I joined this thing called Facebook... big waste of time.”“Well,” I answered, “If that’s the case, why did you join?”“I’m trying to keep up with the Western New York football

scene and if you wanna do that nowadays, you have tohave a computer and use thatinternet thing,” he said.

I asked him what he wasseeing on Facebook.

“Everyone’s all up in arms,”he said, “because teams arescoring 60 and 70 points insome of the games. Peopleare ranting about the gamewithout mentioning the teamsinvolved... like they don’t wantto embarass anyone.”

“Well,” I said. “A lot of people don’t like it when a teamspound on an opponent like that. They kind of took advan-tage of a weaker team.”

“Oh,” Otto said, wrinkling his forehead. “But, isn’t thatwhat football teams are supposed to do? Find a weaknessin your opponent and take advantage of it?”

“Well...” I started.“So, if your opponent has a weakness, you’re supposed

to try not to score? Maybe the coach could tell his runningbacks to fall down as soon as they get the ball. That mightmake it easier on the other team.”

“I don’t think you understand the spirit of high schoolfootball,” I said. “You are supposed to use good sports-manship and not humiliate the other guy.”

“Who said anything about humiliating?” Otto asked.“What’s humiliating about getting beat as long as you didyour best and played your hardest right to the end?”

“I guess I see your point,” I conceded. “But some peo-ple are saying that those teams should have stopped scor-ing because the game was out of hand.”

“Out of hand?” Otto asked. “Check the New York Staterecord book, pal. In the old days, there were a lot ofgames that ended 121-0. I mean, quite a few teams havewon games 48-0 this year. Should we punish them forthat? Jamestown has scored 68 points the other night.

Should they get a letter of reprimand? And why should thelosing teams be embarrassed? They fought hard to thevery end. They have nothing to be ashamed of.”

“I guess...” I started.“Besides, Frontier just got caught on a bad night,” Otto

said. “What about those other programs?”“What other programs?” I asked.“There are a few football programs out there that

haven’t won more than two games in a season sinceMcKinley was shot in Buffalo,” Otto said with disgust.“Their community does not take the sport seriously and allthe opposing coaches protect these programs by not scor-ing on them. For years, these same teams lose 45-0 eachand every week. Why not truly roll it up on them and leteveryone know how bad they really are?”

“That wouldn’t be very nice,” I said.“So what?” Otto laughed. “Football isn’t nice. It’s a com-

petition. The idea behind a competition is to do your verybest. After it’s over, shake hands, share some mutual

respect and leave the fieldtogether as fellow warriors.”

“By beating them 121-0?” Iasked.

“Sure,” he said, “Then thesekids might understand howmuch work they have to do toget better. You see, the reallygood programs don’t just getlucky. Those coaches and theirplayers work their butts off toget good. They work all winter, spring and summer to get ready

for the season. They do a ton of fund-raising so they canattend camps and coaching clinics. Their community andtheir school district makes sure they have all the equipmentthey need to get bigger, stronger and faster.”

“But...” I started.“Unfortunately, not everybody wants to work hard,” Otto

said. “Some kids sit around all summer watching cartoons.Did they run the bleachers? Did they lift weights everyday? Maybe if they got beat 121-0 every single week, theywould understand exactly how much work and effort ittakes to be good at football.”

“But we’re trying to do more than just coach football,” Isaid. “We’re trying to teach life’s lessons to these kids.”

“By not making them feel bad,” Otto said, his voice drip-ping with sarcasm. “Let me tell you, teaching kids that lifewill take it easy on you when you don’t work hard is exact-ly the WRONG kind of lesson we should be teaching.”

“Um...” I said. “Wow... maybe you have a point.”“Of course I have a point,” he said, “but it’ll never hap-

pen. Everyone would rather complain about the successfulprograms than try to be more like them. We make rules sothat strong and successful people are as mediocre aseveryone else. That way, nobody gets their feelings hurt.”

“It’s the American way.”

It’s not the critic who counts.

Not the man who points out wherethe strong man stumbled or wherethe doer of deeds could have donethem better.

The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood;

who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again...

...who at best knows,in the end, the triumphof high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly,

so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat.
