The new stadium of Zaragoza is located on the out-skirts of Zaragoza. The urban design acts as a strong impulse at the edge of a new urban development area and creates a dynamic spatial relationship in between the existing infrastructure and the future city exten-sion. The orientation of the new stadium is parallel to the street Ronda Hispanidad. The position of the new sta-dium creates fluid spaces and open plazas along the site. A pedestrian bridge connects the train station with the main promenade level of the stadium acting as a transition space to the new residential areas in everyday use. The project concept is a composition of a sculptural umbrella and a stadium. The design merges two build-ing parts and architectural languages into one new entity. A sculptural roof covers the tribunes of the sta-dium and provides partially covered semi public areas

and open outdoor spaces outside the bowl. The um-brella is conceived as an open visible steel construc-tion that is clad with concrete louvers in the bottom and metal louvers in the top.The inner ring above the tribune is covered with a translucent fabric that protects the visitors from rain while allowing sunlight in to support the growing of the grass on the playing field. The new stadium is shaped by the dynamic forces of climate and internal function and will become a dis-tinctive and highly recognizable architectural icon for Zaragoza.
