Two bright spots for Fairmont State Univer-

59-34 loss to visiting West Virginia State Thursday evening at Duvall-Rosier Field were the play of redshirt freshman running back James Oliver and true freshman receiv-er Aaron Willis.

Oliver, who is from Tyrone, Pa. and starred at Tyrone High School where he rushed for over 3,800 yards in his final two seasons, originally attended Saint Francis University where he was redshirted last season. He transferred to Fairmont State for the start of the 2015 school year.

Oliver, a 5-11, 200-pounder, was impressive in fall camp, but was listed third on the Fal-

see the field or the football Thursday night until the third quarter. When he did, how-ever, touch the ball he made the most of his chances rushing for a team-high 73 yards

average of 5.6 yards per attempt.

“We put James Oliver in the game and he became somewhat of a lightning bolt for

about what he was able to do for us in that situation.

Oliver scored on runs of nine and one yard and had a long run of 14 yards. He says he was patiently waiting for his chance to play

positive when he did get on the field.

“West Virginia State did their thing and struck against us early and often and kind of put the dagger in us there in the first half,” said Oliver. “Our heads were down a little, but we scored there at the end of the half

going in the second half. As a member of this

second half and try to get back in this thing

“One thing we have to do is remain posi-tive. In the second half I thought our O line played better and as a unit I thought we were able to run the ball better and throw

backs ahead of me on this team, but when I did get my opportunity to get on the field I wanted to make the most of it and help our

-

got to regroup this week and get better.”

Willis, meanwhile, is a 5-11, 170-pound wide receiver from Crestview, Fla., who caught 53 passes for 891 and 13 touchdowns during his final two seasons at Niceville High School. Thursday his biggest impact for the Falcons was as a kick returner which was an area FSU struggled a lot in during the 2014 season af-

the first game.

The speedy Willis returned six kicko!s for 176 yards, which was an average of 29.3 yards per return. He had a long return of 59 yards. Wil-lis also caught a pair of passes for 62 yards, including a 42-yarder late in the first half

the game.

18.1 yards ranked 129th in the nation out of 167 teams in NCAA Division II.

---

Penalties continue to be a problem for FSU. The Falcons were penalized an average of 9.2 times per game in 2013 and 9.9 times per game in 2014. Thursday night Fairmont was flagged 15 times for 157 yards, including sev-en times for 70 yards in the first quarter. The Falcons ended the first half with 12 penalties

Virginia State for 35 yards.

State did end up with a game-high 16 penal-

flags came in the second half long after the

play within ourselves,” said FSU sophomore defensive end Quincy Redmon, who led his team with eight total tackles, including three for losses. “We play with such passion

a lot of pride, but we know we have to work on things in that area, clean things up and play smarter.

“We have a lot of leaders on this team and -

sponsibility for us to play better and play

our performance. We know we have a lot of room for improvement, but like coach said

-maining and I think we will get better.”

The 59 points scored by West Virginia State were the most scored by the Yellow Jackets since the 2008 season when they opened that campaign with a 67-13 win over Lincoln, Pa. It was also the most points scored by an

Field since 1980 breaking the old mark of 56 set by Glenville State in 2003.

In addition, the 59 points allowed by FSU were the most given up by a Fairmont de-fense since 1931 when Marshall University defeated the Falcons 60-0.

The combined 93 total points by the Falcons and Yellow Jackets Thursday night was the fifth-highest combined point total in a game played at Duvall-Rosier Field since 1980.

his high level of play. Guerra, who led the Fal-cons in receptions and receiving yards last fall, finished with a game-high six catches for 123 yards and one touchdown in the sea-

receiving yards in a game.

For his career he has 101 receptions for 1,260 yards and eight touchdowns.

Junior quarterback Cooper Hibbs completed 17-of-30 passes for 278 yards and a pair of touchdowns Thursday night with no inter-ceptions. He was, however, sacked five times which was the most sacks allowed by an FSU o!ensive front since it allowed five in a 27-21 loss to West Liberty in 2013.

Thursday night Hibbs passed Logan Moore for fourth place in school history on Fair-

with 3,651 yards and Roy Michael for fifth place in school history in career touchdown passes with 27.
