Short punt11 dive trap

The 11 Dive Trap Play

When to Use the 11 Dive Trap Play• This play can beused to trap an aggressive right defensive guard.

How the Play Works.• The ball is snapped to the 2 back, a low pass to his right knee. The 2

back spins on his right foot holding the ball with his left hand on his left hip, concealed from the defense.

• The 3 back drives across and the 2 back fakes to the Number 3 backby placing his right hand quickly in his stomach. The number 3 back pretendsto hide the ball and continues on to the left flank. The defensive guard isallowed into the backfield and is trapped by the Number 4 back. The trap iseffective because the attention of the guard is focused on the ball-handling 2back. The QB drives straight up the middle and receives the handoff from

Number 2 who merely places the ball, which is already in hand, in the stomach of the QB. The 2 back now dropsback as if to pass.

Individual Player Responsibilities• The left end screens his defensive counterpart to the outside and releases straight downfield to block the first

opponent he uncovers. Usually this will be the defensive halfback will be held to the outside by the fake of theNumber 3 back to their side of the field.

• The left tackle uncover blocks, forcing defensive man to the outside.• The left guard must trap the man who is on him. The Defensive man must be let in - it is permissible to bump

him, but he should not be held up. The guard then releases and blocks the linebacker, who should be fake donestep to the outside by the Number 3 back's fake.

• The center uncover blocks to the right. This is a key block. The center should be sure not to block man on hisleft. The right guard works with the center if necessary; otherwise he releases downfield.

• The right tackle uncover blocks the linebacker if he has moved to the center area.• The right end releases downfield and uncover blocks the linebacker on that side if he has not moved to the

center area.

The 26 PlayWhen to Use the 26 Play.• This play is to beused against a defensive left end who is squaring or

boxing.

How the Play Works.• As the tailback receives the ball, he turns and runs to the sideline, to

set up the end so that the Number 3 back may block him.The fullback (3)must place his head and shoulder between the defensive end/OLB and theproposed 7 hole. As the fullback contacts the end the QB should break "offhis tail" and on up the field. The number 4 back or wingback takes the firstman outside the end or the first linebacker on his side.

Individual Player Responsibilities• The 2 back leads up a hole and hits first opponent.

• The Right end(5) double-teams the man to his inside with the Right tackle. We believe this will be theopponent's toughest man.

• The Right tackle works with the Right end (5), or, if the end can handle this man alone, uncovers and blocksthe first man to his inside.

• The Left guard uncover blocks the man on him,or releases downfield to block the first man he uncovers, thenreleases downfield to set up cut-back wall.

• The center blocks the man on him. If his opponent is too tough, the center requests help from the guard.• The left tackle uncover blocks, then releases downfield to set up cut-back wall.• The left end releases downfield, looks for cut back

Short punt17 off-tackle

The 27 PlayWhen to Use the 27 Play.• This play is to be used against a right end who is boxing or squaring.

How the Play Works.• The off-tackle to the weak side (the 27 play) is very successful

because it usually runs against the defensive team weakness. Most teamswill overshift to compensate for the backfield strength to the right. This play issimilar in execution to the 26 play. The ball carrier receives a pass fromcenter with no lead (leadwould cause him to get out too far in front of hisblockers). The tailback sets the end up as in the 26 play by starting for thesideline as the defensive endseeks a cutoff point. He is hit out by the 2 back.3 and 4 backs lead up the hole. In order to get to the hole, the number 4back must cheat to the left and hug the line.

Individual Player Responsibilities• The left end double teams defensive man in gap with the left tackle. If one man can handlethis opponent, the

other releases downfieldand uncover blocks.• The left tackle makes the same play as the left end.• The left guard uncover blocks, releases downfield. The right center and the side of the line uncover block,

release downfield, andlook for cut back.

The 28 PlayWhen to Use the 28 Play.• This play to be used against a crashing left end.

How the Play Works.• The ball is snapped to the QB, who runs at the tackle area in an effort

to make the play resemble a thrust to the inside. This tends to draw thecrashing and even further to the inside and gives the fullback, Number 3, abetter blocking angle on the end to the inside. the 4 back is flanked outsidethe end and blocks the first man outside the end, which is usually the cornerlinebacker (lefthalfback). The 2 back must move fast and close the line.

• He leads the interference and usually blocks the lefthalfback. The passthat goes with the 28 play is the 58 running pass.

Individual Player Responsibilities

• The right end works with the right tackledouble teaming the defensive tackle/end. We figure him to be a strongopponent against our type offense.

• The right guard uncover blocks in the center area and releases downfield.• The left guard uncover blocks and releases downfield, looking for cut back.• The left tackle and end double team the defensive right tackle/end.

Short punt28 double reverse 4flank

The 28 Double ReverseThe 28 double reverse is effective because it resembles the 49 play andcauses the defensive men to become overzealous and take themselves out ofthe play, and also because we use a unique block on the onside end.

When to Use the 28 Double ReverseThis play is to be used against a floating defense or a team that has beenplaying the 49 reverse.

How the Play Works.• We place our best back in the 2 spot. The play begins like the 49 play,

with the QB and 4 backs reversing the same way. While this is takingplace, the 2 back swings a small timing circle to his left, then continues on tomeet the 4 back coming around. The 3 back goes downfield to block the LBon the side where the play will eventually wind up. The QB, after handing offthe ball, continues around and downfield to block the left halfback. The 4

back, after handing off, checks into the defensive end.

Individual Player Responsibilities• The right end (5) has a tricky block. He lets the defensive end in - as the defensive manrealizes the play is

coming back at him. The right end executes a long body block at the defensive end, cutting him down. This is not aclip!

• The right tackle holds and blocks at the line.He lets the defensive man take himself in wrong direction, thenblocks aggressively. This is a key defensive man.

• The right guard blocks for one count and releases downfield to the right to set up a blocking wall.• The center and the entire left side of the line block for one count, then release down field to set up a blocking

wall• The 49 pass play is the pass version.

Short punt28 option

OPTION SERIESThe Short Punt was the father of the Split Toption play. The wheel has comefull circle and weare back to the Short Punt option play.

When to Use the 28 Option Play.• The 28 option play is designed to be used against a crashing end and

convert this action against him. If he crashes, you lateral - if he floats, youturn up field and run with the play.

How the Play Works.• The ball is snapped to the 2 back - a low pass on his right knee.He

executes a quick cross-over step and, while holding the ball in his right hand, quickly places his empty left hand in the stomach of the diving 3 back. Wewant the 2 back moving down the line as close to the line of scrimmage aspossible and starting at the defensive end. The QB is running a course

parallel to the 2 back and looking directlyat the 2 back. As the 2 back approaches the end, he makes one of twomoves: (1)he can lateral to the trailing QB, or (2)he may fake a lateral and turn up-field inside the end. The Number4 back is blocking the first man outside the defensive end.

Individual Player Responsibilities• The right end and right tackle double team theman in the gap.• The right guard blocks straight ahead. He should have an easy block because of the 3 back faking through the

area• The center and the left side of the line uncover block then release downfield

OPTION SERIESThe 13 Play: Dive Portion of the Option Series

The dive portion of the option is actually a play between three people - thequarterback, the rightguard, and the fullback - as shown in diagram 26a, b, andc. Fig. 5-24. Drill for the 18 Option Play. When to Use the 13 Play. This play is the dive portion of the 18 option series. It is designed tomake anymove made by the defensive left guardwork for the offense. How the Play Works. When the 13 dive iscalled, the Number 1 back, right guard and Number 3 backlook to see where the defensive man is playing in reference to our right guard, who signals

Short punt33 fake and trap

The 35 PlayThe last in our series of bread-and-butter plays is the series to our fullback, the35 play. When to Use the 35 Play.• This play should beused when the defensive team has a strong right

tackle.

How the Play Works.• The ball is snapped low on the left knee to the Number 3 back, who

remains low so that he is partially hidden from the defensive linebacker. Asthe fullback receives the bull he executes a half spin and places the ball inthe pocket formed by the faking tailback, then removes the ball violently andbreaks for the 3 hole. The 2 back drives the defensive end/OLB out.

• The key man is The 4 back, who springs the trap

Individual Player Responsibilities• The right end releases downfield and uncoversaway from the play.• The right tackle uncover blocks and releasesdownfield.• The right guard also uncover blocks andreleases downfield• The center and left guard double team.• The left tackle lets his opponent in and uncover blocks away from the hole, usually hitting the linebacker The

left end goes straight through and uncover blocks, usually hitting the linebacker.• The 35 pass is the the pass version of the same play

10

Page 11: Football Playbook - Short Punt Offense

Short punt49 reverse 4flank

The 49 ReverseOn many of our pass plays, we flank our Number 4 back. To confuse thedefense, we also flank our 4 back on all reverse and 18 sweep. The 49 reverseis an excellent play, especially when put in sequence with the 49 pass.

When to Use the 49 Reverse.• This play is to be used against a defensive right end who has been

pursuing your running plays, or against an end who is squaring deep.

How the Play Works.• The 4 back is flanked about two or three yards outside the left end.

The ball is snapped to the QB, who starts to the right. All backs Jab stepright to sell right flow. The 4 back pivots on his right foot and starts towardthe oncoming QB. As the 4 back passes behind the QB, the ball isexchanged, both men executing a fake - usually the QB can shoulder block

the defensive end/OLB. The 2 back blocks the opposing end, who will have come across the line tight, having seenthe ballstart on what looks like a right end run. This block should not be too difficult.

• The 3 back takes the first opponent he sees, usually the linebacker. We do not attempt to block the defensivehalfback on this side. We are trying to set him up for our big scoring play. The halfback will come up hard andusually stop this play after a fair gain.

Individual Player Responsibilities• The left end and left tackle block the man in thegap or the men they uncover. The left guard uncover blocks

away from the hole. The center uncover blocks away from the hole. The right guard, right tackle, and right end holdfor one count. The defensive men should start in the wrong direction and thus give them good uncover angles. Theyshould strike out aggressively, then release downfield looking for a cut back.

• The 49 pass play is the pass version.
