Shades Valley and Vestavia Hills first met in 1973 with the game ending in a 7-7 tie.The two teams did not meet in 1974, but resumed the series in 1975 and haveplayed every year since. This will be the 36th consecutive year Shades Valley hasmet Vestavia Hills in football, with Vestavia Hills taking 27 of those previous 36meetings. In the process, Vestavia Hills has enjoyed a couple of winning streaksagainst Shades Valleyeight in a row from 1978 to 1985 and the current ten-game

streak from 2000 to the present. Regardless of the outcome, most of the contestsare fairly close and rarely are any games in the series a blowout.

Interestingly, Shades Valley owns four shutout victories over Vestavia Hills, which isthe most any team has ever shut out the Rebels. That is pretty good, especiallyconsidering Vestavia Hills has only been shut out 20 times in its 41-year existence.(By comparison, the Hoover Bucs have only shutout the Rebels three times duringtheir rivalry.) And even though Vestavia Hills has won 27 games against theMounties, Vestavia Hills has only shutout Shades Valley three times.

The Mounties-Rebels series has had many memorable games, such as in 1998,when the teams met twice that season. The two teams played each other in the

season opening game, with Vestavia Hills taking a 20-11 victory. Both teams thenran off twelve straight wins, only to meet again in the semifinals of the stateplayoffs. Vestavia Hills came in ranked #1 in the state and the Mounties were #7,and Vestavia Hills pulled off a thrilling 42-35 overtime victory over the Mounties, which many said at the time was the game that actually decided the statechampionship.

The next year, the Mounties got a measure of revenge by routing the defendingstate champions 31-0 on their own home field to open the 1999 season. That winwould turn out to be the last victory Shades Valley would enjoy over the Rebels.

====RECAP AND PREVIEW====Last Friday the Mounties made their last road trip of the season to Oxford to playthe Yellow Jackets. Oxford came in needing a win for at least a tie for second placein the region, while the Mounties were playing for nothing more than pride.

Oxford roared out to a 35-6 lead, then got comfortable with their lead and suddenlythe Mounties started a comeback. Shades Valley scored 22 straight unansweredpoints and closed the gap to 35-28, but there wasn't enough clock left to finish thecomeback and the Mounties fell. Yet another close loss, and yet another huge scarefor a team that felt they would walk out of the stadium with an easy victory.Nonetheless, the Mounties record falls to 1-8 overall, and 1-6 in Region 7. GadsdenCity won Region 7 by virtue of defeating Hewitt-Trussville on Friday. Hewitt-Trussville, Oxford & Clay-Chalkville are tied for second at 5-2. Austin is fifth at 4-3.Huffman, Shades Valley & Pell City are tied for sixth with 1-6 records.

Our last game of the season has the Mounties finishing at home against traditionalfoe, the Vestavia Hills Rebels. Vestavia Hills went 9-2 last year, and currently are 7-2 overall and 5-2 in Region 6. They finished in second place in Region 6 and willhost on November 5th in a first round playoff game. Anderson is 25-8 in his career against Shades Valley, while Shades Valley's Coleman is 0-6 in his career against Vestavia Hills.
