FIRST L TO UIWThe University of the Incarnate Word defeated Texas A&M-Kingsville in the season opener 18-16. It was the first time in four meetings that the Javelinas were not victories against the Cardinals. The deciding points were scored when UIW ran in a blocked PAT that did not cross the neutral zone.

ROBINSON’S TFLSSophomore defensive end Braedon Robinson is closing in the Javelinas’ top 20 tackles for losses list. He currently has 13.5 in his career after recording one TFL in the season opener at Incarnate Word. With 4.5 more TFLs, Robinson would tie five former Blue and Gold players for 19th on the career list.

SAFETY!The first points of the 2015 season for the Blue and Gold was a safety when Incarnate Word snapped the ball over their punter’s head in the second quarter. The two-point play was the first for TAMUK since Nov. 10, 2007 against Angelo State. Coincidentally, that saftey also came when a punt was snapped out of the end zone.

SEASON OPENING DEFEATFor the second straight year, Texas A&M-Kingsville came out on the short end of their season open-er. The first game of 2014 saw the Javelinas fall 27-14 to Humboldt State at home. It is the first time the Hoggies have lost back-to-back season openers since they dropped three straight from 2006-08.

DIVISION I OPPONENTFor the first time since 2008, the Javelinas played a Division I opponent when they opened the sea-son at Incarnate Word. With the loss, the Blue and Gold have now dropped two straight to higher level oppoents following their 18-16 setback to the Cardinals. Previously, TAMUK lost to North Dakota in the 2008 season. The last last victory over a DI opponent was on Sept. 20, 2003 at home against Nicholls State (Southland Conference) by the score of 27-26.

TAMUK VS. D1 PROGRAMSAll-time against Division I opponents, Texas A&M-Kingsville fell to 29-20 following the season open-er in San Antonio. The most wins are 11 against Texas Southern of the Southwestern Athletic Con-ference. The Javelinas also have victories over Hawaii, Idaho State, Lamar, Nevada, Nicholls State, Northern Arizona, Prairie View A&M, Texas State and UTEP. All records are from 1973 onward when the NCAA went to numerical divisions.

OPENING DRIVETexas A&M University-Kingsville (0-1, 0-0 LSC) opens their home slate against Missouri S&T (0-1, 0-0 GLVC) on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at Javelina Stadium. This will be the first ever meeting between the two programs.

MITCHELL’S COMPLETIONSSenior quarterback Trey Mitchell enters the season 21st on Texas A&M-Kingsville’s career comple-tions list with 224. He is 13 shy of tying James Guidry (1985-87) and needs 76 to become the 18th Javelina ever with 300 career completions. The program record is 819 by Nate Poppell (2008-12).

WILKINSON ERATexas A&M-Kingsville begins the Daren Wilkinson era in 2015. He is the 11th all-time and 10th full-time head coach in program history. Coming off a national championship at Colorado State-Pueblo as the offensive coordinator in 2014, Wilkinson looks to restore the glory to Javelina football.

NEWCOMERS GALOREThe 2015 Javelinas will feature 53 new players that have never set foot on campus prior to presea-son camp. The newcomers comprise 48.2% of the 110-man roster. With so many new faces, nearly every starting position is up for grabs prior to the first contest of the year.

NEW LOOK DEFENSEWith nearly an entire new coaching staff, changes were expected on the style of play on both sides of the ball. Defensively, the Javelinas will run a 3-4 base defense in 2015. The defensive coaching

staff installed the new scheme at a slow methodical pace to help avoid “paralysis by analyses.”

OFFENSIVE RETURNERSTexas A&M-Kingsville returns only four starters from last season with three being offensive lineman (Christian Garcia, Aundra Long and Bo Villarreal). Jordan Thomas led the team in receiving with 41 catches, 547 yards and three touchdowns. The second leading returning catching the pigskin is run-ning back Greg Pitre at 6.4 yards/game.

The strong point for the Javelinas is in the backfield. Along with Pitre (287 yds/1 TD), fellow running backs Shawn Vasquez (585 yds/5 TD) and Joe Te’o (270 yds/4 TD) will hit the field again this year.

DEFENSIVE RETURNERSSeven starters are back from the 2014 Javelina defense. Leading the way on the line is Braedon Robinson. He led the squad with 12.5 tackles for losses and 4.5 sacks at defensive end. AA Vaaulu recorded 12 tackles, four of them solo, two quarterback hurries, a pass break-up and defelction as a defensive tackle.

Trevor Moses leads the linebacking core following an 81-tackle campaign. He posted 4.5 tackles for a loss along with forcing and recovering a fumble. DeMarcus Spurlock appeared in 10 games last year, including the final seven. He finished with 20 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks. Also seeing action in 2014 was Miles Kirksey (6 tkls) and ZeMarcus Green (11 tkls).

Lamont Hills is slated to start at strong safety after making 52 tackles a year ago. Starting all 11 games was Kelechi Amushie, who also recorded one of the squad’s five interceptions. Joe Crow eposted 13 solo tackles and assisted on nine while breaking up six passes. Emond Hobbs appeared in four games, starting three, with 20 tackles, seven of them solo.

SPECIAL TEAM RETURNERSReturning from last year among the special teams is kicker Max Lehnig. He went was 2-for-8 last season on field goals with both of his makes coming from between 20 and 29 yards, longest being 28 yards. On extra-points, Lehnig converted 25-of-27 with a miss coming against Texas A&M-Com-merce at the LSC Football Festival and in the season finale at McMurry.

While Lehnig also handled punting duties last season (57 punts, 34.9 avg), he is going to give way this season to senior Tristan Hernandez. Last season the Converse, Texas native did not appear in any games for the Blue and Gold but was named to the LSC Fall Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

Joe Crowe, listed as the #2 kick and punt returner, returned 17 kickoffs last season for 348 yards and an average of 20.5. His longest was 46 at Tarleton State. He also recored one punt return of 43 yards versus Texas A&M-Commerce. Shawn Vasquez heads into the season opener as the #1 kick returner for the Javelinas. He finished 2014 with four returns of 37 yards (9.2 avg) and a long of 16 coming at West Texas A&M.

JEFFERSON IN SEATTLEJavelina Hall of Famer and defensive backs coach James Jefferson spent part of the summer intern-ing with the Seattle Seahawks during their preseason training camp. He played five seasons (1989-93) with the Seahawks. A highlight from his time in the Northwest was setting the team record with a 97-yard kickoff return in his first season with the squad.

#JAVELINASTRONGThroughout the season, the Javelinas will use the hashtag #JavelinaStrong to promote all 14 of their athletic programs. We encourage our fans to join us in a positive manner by using the hashtag throughout the 2015-16 campaign.

WEEKLY CAPTAINSThis year head coach Daren Wilkinson has elected to go with different team captains each week. This is the second time in the past couple of years that this system will be used, rather than have captains selected for the entire season.

FOOTBALL2015 @JavelinaFB Game NOTES

E. Steinke stands on the south side of Javelina Stadium.

Along with the statue, the landscaped plaza includes six benches recognizing the six national championship teams Steinke coached and there are paving stones sponsored by Javelina players, coaches and staff as well as alumni and fans.

Steinke played for the Javelinas in 1938-41.

He served with the U.S. Navy in World War II and played with the Philadelphia Eagles before an injury forced him to give up his professional career. After coaching at several colleges, he became the head coach at his alma mater in 1954.

That started career that became one of the best in college football history. Steinke’s squads won six national championships, was national runnerup once and had an eighth postseason victory when the Javelinas won the 1960 Great Southwest Bowl. His teams had a 14-1 record in NAIA post-season play. The Javelinas won 10 Lone Star Conference championships in his 1954-76 coach-ing career. They had a 39-game winning streak intact when he stepped down as head coach after the 1976 season.

In his final three seasons, Texas A&I was 13-0 in 1974, 12-0 in 1975 and 13-0 in 1976. He also had undefeated teams in 1967 (9-0-0) and 1962 (9-0-1). The 1974, 1975 and 1976 teams led the nation offensively and the 1976 squad set a national record for most yards gained during a season (6,269) and another mark for most offensive His teams were among the most traveled in the nation, at any level.

Steinke was NAIA national coach of the year four times and was American Football Coaches Asso-ciation district coach of theyear twice.

He was the Texas Sports Writers Association coach of the year in 1975 and was Lone Star Confer-ence coach of the year five times.

Steinke was chosen the LSC coach of the decade for the 1960s. He was a charter inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1996 when it opened its doors to coaches and athlete from college division schools.

Steinke was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1971 and was a charter member of the Javelina Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 1977. He retired from coaching after the 1976 season but continued as athletic director until 1982.

While his record and his honors are unsurpassed, he was a pioneer in football. Steinke recruited Sid Blanks in 1960 and he became one of the first black football players at an integrated school in Texas, and one of the first in the South.

Blanks served as a team captain in 1963, another first for a black player at an integrated school in the state or South. Stories of the obstacles Steinke and his teams faced in the seasons after Blanks joined the team are numerous.

In the latter years of his coaching career, Steinke left the sidelines and went into the stands to call plays. “The worst place towatch a game in on the sidelines,” Steinke would say at the time. He said the press box was “too hectic”.

He had a coach with him and would send the aide back and forth to the sidelines to give the coaching staff instructions.

FOOTBALL

Daren Wilkinson was named the 11th head coach and 10th full-time head coach in Texas A&M-Kings-ville history on Dec. 15, 2014 and formally introduced on Dec. 22, 2014. Wilkinson takes over the historic Javelina football program after two seasons as offen-sive coordiniator and quarterbacks coach at Colorado State University-Pueblo.

The Thunder Wolves finished the 2014 season 14-1 overall and No. 1 nationally after earning the school’s first ever NCAA Division II Football Championship, defeating previously unbeaten and top-ranked Minnesota State-Mankato. Three offensive players, including running back Cameron McDondle earned Daktronics All-Super Region 4 honors as Colorado State-Pueblo earned its fourth consecutive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference crown and reached the NCAA Division II Playoffs for the fourth straight season.

In just their seventh season since reinstating football, CSU-Pueblo averaged nearly 35 points per game and 400 yards per game. Under his guidance, quarterback Chris Bonner was propelled to All-America honorable mention honors in 2013 and this season, ranks 18th in the nation with 30 passing touchdowns. Three offensive players, including running back Cam-eron McDondle earned Daktronics All-Super Region 4 honors as Colorado State-Pueblo earned its fourth consecutive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference crown and reached the NCAA Division II Playoffs for the fourth straight season. Four offensive players were named to the Don Hansen All-Super Region 4 team. In his first season as offensive coordinator for the Pack, Wilkinson guided CSU-Pueblo to 509.3 yards of offensive per game and 42.7 points per contest, ranked sixth and seventh nationally, respectively. Bonner received all-region accolades, tallying 33 touchdowns, seventh most in the country. Wilkinson joined CSU-Pueblo after nearly four seasons as the quarterbacks coach and assistant re-

cruiting coordinator for NCAA Division I program and his alma mater, Colorado State University. Serving under Rams coach Steve Fairchild from 2008-12, he helped lead Colorado State to the New Mexico Bowl championship in 2008. That season, his offense ranked in the top 40 na-tionally and former CSU quarterback Billy Farris went on to play in the National Football League with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2009. While at CSU, his recruiting areas included San Diego, North Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, North Calif., Ariz., Nev., Utah and all quarterback prospects. In 2004, he joined the South Dakota State Uni-versity football coaching staff as the offensive coordinator, quarterbacks and wide receivers

coach. While there, he helped SDSU have a smooth transition to Division I as the team had a winning record each season he led the offense, culminating in the 2007 Great West Conference championship. Spending four seasons as the offensive signal caller for SDSU, he coached the quarterback that set the school’s all-time passing record and defeated the No. 1 team in the nation in 2007. South Dakota State finished with a winning record in his four seasons. Joining the NCAA Division II ranks as the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach at Fayetteville State University (N.C.) in 2001, Wilkinson coached two all-conference receivers and assisted the team in earning back-to-back CIAA Conference titles in 2002-03 and a NCAA Division II playoff berth in 2002. Wilkinson has coached for 15 years at the collegiate level, beginning as an offensive graduate assistant at Colorado State in 1997 and 1998 after quarter-backing the Rams for two seasons, leading them to the 1995 Western Athletic Conference title. He then served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Eastern Arizona College from 1999-00. While at Eastern Arizona, he recruited and coached six players that went on to play NCAA Division I foot-ball and led the squad to an upset win over the No. 1 team in the nation. As an offensive graduate assistant for the Rams, he helped lead the team to the 1997 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championship and Holliday Bowl Championship. In his three sea-sons as a GA, he worked with two quarterbacks that earned conference player of the year honors. As a player, Wilkinson started seven games for Colorado State in 1995 as a junior, leading the Rams to a share of the WAC title. Joining the Rams after a sensational playing career at Ricks Junior College (now BYU-Idaho), he went 21-2 as a starter and was crowned the College Sports Magazine Junior College Player of the Year in 1994. That season, he earned first team All-American honors, leading the squad to

an 11-0 mark and throwing for over 3,000 yards en route to the school’s all-time passing record. Growing up in Valley Center, Calif., Wilkinson was a two-sport athlete at Orange Glen High School, letter-ing in both basketball and football. He earned second team all-conference honors on the gridiron. Born Feb. 11, 1972, in Corona, Calif., he owns two de-grees from Colorado State, a bachelors in psychology (‘97) and a master’s in education (‘99). He and his wife Ann have three children, Alexa, Macy and Jet.
