South Fremantle’s Jermaine Miller-Lewis has left an indelible mark at all his football clubs.

While the product of Perth’s south-east hasn’t reach the potential as a senior player he so brightly promised as a junior, his contribution to the culture of the game has been prominent, belying his age.

The 21-year-old relished the indigenous spirt at the Bulldogs as a teenager before embarking on an AFL odyssey with Hawthorn that didn’t quite live up to his dreams. Yet he will always have a place at the Hawks. More precisely his art will be on the Hawthorn club room walls for a long time. While biding his time with Box Hill in the VFL, waiting for an AFL promotion that never came, the rookie squad member honed his skills with a paintbrush, concentrating on indigenous stories and those of his own youth in the WA bush. A piece involving then fellow Hawks Alastair Clarkson and Cyril Rioli hangs outside the club’s player lounge to mark last year’s Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round. This weekend the WAFL celebrates its indigenous links and Miller-Lewis is again highlighting the occasion with his visual talents. Miller-Lewis has designed the indigenous-themed jumper South Fremantle will proudly wear in the NAIDOC round battle with Claremont at Claremont Oval.

Shortly after Miller-Lewis returned to the port late last year, Bulldogs football manager David Depane asked the recruit whether he wanted to design the special guernsey. “I’m so happy that they thought about me in that way when the process was coming around and I’m super proud to have my design on the jumper,” Miller-Lewis said. “I’ve been aligned with the club since I came through the young Warriors programs, so to be able to put my artwork on the jumper and express myself as an artist and person means a lot to me. “Quite often you are just seen your footy abilities and judged by that, but being able to express myself through art humanises everything and lets you focus on your mind, body and spirit.” Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Miller-Lewis won’t be wearing the uniform into battle. Although he came home determined to continue his career with South Fremantle and worked hard with the league squad during pre-season, he eventually opted to take a break from the game. He hopes it will eventually rekindle the spark. The door is always open for Miller-Lewis at South Fremantle. “Physically I feel more than capable of still playing at a high level with my football, but mentally I just needed some time to myself to ask myself some questions about how to find a meaningful pathway in life,” he said.

“Football won’t always be there so I want to set myself for life after footy and that’s what I’ve been focusing on. I feel like it’s important to explore those areas of my life that’s interesting at the moment in terms of working with youth, social and emotional and well-being in the community and social awareness training. “There’s a massive amount of interest I have of what’s going on in the world outside of footy. Having this break has helped me explore those areas and kick some goals off the field.” Art has been an important tool in Miller-Lewis’ journey. He had the skills in his genes as his grandmother, Valery Miller, is a renowned painter. And he turned to the creative side during his teens when sometimes pressures began to build in his life. Last year he set up a Facebook page, Yellowbidi Dreaming Artwork, which features an array for indigenous artworks that can be sold to the public. Each piece has a story or message to convey. It is the same for the South Fremantle jumper this round. There was great meaning behind the images. “As for the design itself, what I have interpreted as the Swan River is running through it and that is quite significant to the Noongar people as in that’s part of their dreaming stories with the Wagyl coming to rest in the Swan River for creation time,” Miller-Lewis said. “The symbols on the outside represent that South Fremantle is the main meeting place of a travel line of where people come to play. It’s a design that holds significance that is close to South Fremantle and myself as well.” The jumper design reflects the past but for Miller-Lewis the guernsey will be a treasured memento to pass on to his family. “It’s going to be a big moment for myself because I haven’t had my artwork on a jumper like that before which was specifically designed by me,” he said. “It’s going to be very special. “I had input to the one at Hawthorn when I was there but I really like this rustic style and I did it that way on purpose because I wanted to express myself as an artist. It’s going to be a great feeling actually seeing it on the jumper and I can’t wait to get my own to keep and pass it on to the little ones.”

If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean at [email protected] or Sean Cowan, c/o Football Budget, PO Box 911, Subiaco WA 6904. His website is at www.waflcollectables.webs.com and he also can be contacted on 0412 760 004.

There’s nothing more exciting for a collector than to find something that was not previously known to exist. Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen too often these days, especially given I’ve been writing this column for seven seasons and have spread the word about WAFL Collectables far and wide. But there was such a rare moment this week, when I received a phone call from someone who had discovered some 1960s WAFL transfers. Most of these were made by the service stations and appeal to collectors of both WAFL memorabilia and garagenalia (if you’ve never heard the latter term, it describes anything connected to the oil and petrol industry). But this lot didn’t carry any oil company logo and were unlikely to have been given away with a tank of fuel. In fact, a bit of research revealed they were likely to have been made by Milo and given away inside tins of the chocolate malt drink in 1964. This is because they look exactly the same as a set of transfers that was given away inside Milo tins in South Australia that year. The transfers themselves were made by the Murian Transfer Company, of Sydney, and sealed inside plastic packets, which would have protected them from being damaged by the Milo. Collectors have documented the existence of six of the nine South Australian transfers and now I’ve seen three of the eight WAFL transfers. So, does anyone have the Claremont, Perth, South Fremantle, Subiaco or Swan Districts transfers from this set?

There were some nice items on offer at the sales this week. One sale price that surprised me was the $93 paid at auction for a West Perth scarf that had “Cardies”, rather than “Falcons” on it. Obviously, the buyer was prepared to pay a fair bit more than the usual prices paid for scarves to secure one with the club’s old moniker. On the other side of the ledger, a stash of nine Football Budgets from 1966 sold for just $20. But some decent prices were paid for other Football Budgets, including the $44 paid for a 1972 grand final edition. The highlight was probably the rare 1963 Shell Autograph Album, which was signed by members of the victorious Swan Districts team. Stamps featuring player photos were designed to be stuck into this album. There were eight stamps per club (64 in total). Sadly, this one was missing eight stamps, but it still sold for $412. And a copy of Jack Sheedy’s My Football Life book sold for the rather disappointing price of $12.Today’s final items come to us from WAFL collector George, who kindly offered to write about a few of his favourite pieces over the course of the coming months. The following words are his: “Over the past few decades, the WAFL has produced a large number of champion players at different clubs. “And while the clubs always celebrated these players’ milestones, there didn’t always seem to be the same amount of significance placed on them. “Barry Cable’s testimonial game was one exception, though.” For the game played between East Perth and North Melbourne at Perth Oval on Sunday

March 9th 1980, a souvenir program was produced. In addition, 1000 limited edition t-shirts were made, as was a vinyl album called “Get Them Going Cabes”, which sold for $5.50. Unfortunately, only the program ever comes up for sale these days. West Perth also made a special effort for Mel Whinnen when he played his 300th game in the last qualifying game against South Fremantle at Fremantle Oval in 1974. It’s interesting to note that the Cardies finished on the bottom of the WAFL ladder in 1974, but still managed to hold South Fremantle out of the finals by beating them in Whinnen’s final game. The poster was printed by Sovereign Print and it’s not known how many were made. But they were probably only displayed at Leederville Oval and are scarce these days.

CLAReMont V soUtH FReMAntLe

ClaremontRecent history: The last outing might have been a two-point defeat. But it was against an AFL-talent-laden Peel. In Mandurah. After three consecutive wins at home.the question mark: What is in the water at the revamped Claremont Oval? Since the Tigers have moved back home they’ve found a new lease of life.Keep the binoculars on: The name is familiar even if the jumper is different. Subiaco dual premiership player Charles Le Fanu made his Claremont debut last round. He last played league in 2015.

South FremantleRecent history: Had the bye after two wins on the trot only to see its second position on the ladder become three wins off top following another Subiaco win.the question mark: Can Blaine Johnson and Cory Dell’Olio continue to perform a brilliant double-act in the South Fremantle forward line?Keep the binoculars: There has been a stint with Fremantle and a couple of injuries along the way but Haiden Schloithe will get to celebrate his 100th appearance in the Bulldogs guernsey.

the battle: The cats are starting to purr at Tigerland. And the balance of Claremont across all of its lines will be a welcome test for a South Fremantle unit that needs to hit top gear if it is to catch the rampaging Subiaco on the premiership ladder. Experience is benefitting the Tigers with Jesse Laurie and Matt Davies marshalling the defence, Keifer Yu and Jye Bolton lively in midfield and Ian Richardson back to his hard-running best across half-forward. However, Claremont should expect South Fremantle to come at them hard early. A slow start against Perth forced the Bulldogs match committee to seek a remedy during the week.

sUBIACo v PeRtH

SubiacoRecent history: It has become the WAFL’s broken record for 2017. Another win for Subiaco last week. That’s 12 in a row and top spot. Much like last week.the question mark: Will Subiaco’s Mr Fixit, Clancy Wheeler, recover from a leg injury in time or do the Lions take the cautious approach and rest him anyway?Keep the binoculars on: Aaron Heal had missed four rounds with a jaw injury but returned to the Subiaco defence last week as if nothing had happened. A key to the Lions’ attempts to strangle an opposition.

PerthRecent history: In the first quarter of the clash with Swan Districts Perth fans dared to dream – again. But like the previous round the Demons couldn’t sustain the effort. They are 2-12.the question mark: What will Perth coach Earl Spalding say to his team at quarter time to ensure it doesn’t continue to undo its positive early work?Keep the binoculars on: Perth followers have been impressed by the defensive attributes of Anton Scotney in his first eight league games. He will have his hands full considering the talent on the other team.

West PeRtH v PeeL

the battle: For 199 WAFL matches Andrew Strijk has often been the sweeper for the Falcons, saving them from an advancing horde. Now Strijk is needed to guide West Perth out of danger on the premiership ladder. Another loss and the Falcons could be out of the top five by 5pm Saturday. Strijk, who also played three matches for West Perth in the defunct Foxtel Cup, has been just as effective in attack. Hopefully for the Falcons wherever he lines up he can inspire others to challenge a Dockers stacked Thunder unit.

West PerthRecent history: Losses to Claremont, South Fremantle and Subiaco have left West Perth teetering on the edge of the top five at 7-6.the question mark: Have the Falcons dried out? Last round was played in waterlogged conditions which they didn’t handle too well.Keep the binoculars on: Scott Simpson didn’t mind the wet with 17 possessions, 31 hit-outs and six inside 50s. That kind of versatility makes him a key weapon in the clash with the Thunder.

PeelRecent history: Three wins, including one by two points and another by six points, have shot Peel back to third place on the ladder. They are 8-5.the question mark: Is Shane Kersten’s impact on the Thunder attack short-lived? Will the suspension of Cam McCarthy force Kersten’s AFL recall?Keep the binoculars on: Another Fremantle player, albeit on the rookie list, Ryan Nyhuis, can’t be far from elevation to the senior squad after another impressive effort off half back last week.

sWAn DIstRICts v eAst FReMAntLe

Swan DistrictsRecent history: A couple of victories over East Perth and Perth have kept Swans from falling from the top five. They now sit in fourth place on the ladder at 8-5.the question mark: Has Corey Gault become one of the best big men in the WAFL? He had 23 possessions, four marks, 51 hit-outs and four inside 50s last round.Keep the binoculars on: As the wet weather hits and the game becomes a ground ball affair midfielder Adam Faulkner will become an even bigger influence on the black and whites. Faulkner relishes the conditions.

East FremantleRecent history: The 2017 breakthrough win is now three weeks ago and East Fremantle has since slipped back into some old habits. 1-12 and ninth.the question mark: How deep is the Sharks’ casualty list? Jonathon Marsh, Tim Bristow, Jayden Schofield, Lachlan Bailey, Jamie McNamara and Liam Anthony are amongst the wounded.Keep the binoculars on: As the big guns fall around him Cam Eardley is having to shoulder a heavy responsibility for the Sharks. So far he has been able to handle the role but he could do with some help.

the battle: For all the criticisms of East Fremantle it must be conceded it is tough to win with four of your best players sidelined, another returning from injury via the reserves and then losing one more a minute into the contest. That was Rob Wiley’s plight with the Sharks last week. No wonder they struggled against East Perth. But Swans aren’t going to be any different. They beat the Royals a couple of weeks ago and Jake Nuich, Todd Banfield and Alex Howard showed last round the black and whites are genuine finals material.

the battle: Last year featured the seasons of upsets. Think Leicester City, Chicago Cubs, Western Bulldogs … even Peel. So it is likely the sporting gods don’t have too many surprise results left up their sleeves. That is a shame for Perth because it is going to need all and any help it can get. It isn’t bad enough that the Lions have won nine of the past 10 matches against the Demons. When they met in round 12 it was a 75-point triumph for Subiaco. And it is even more concerning for the Demons that some of the keys to the Lions’ success over West Perth last round were Heal, Greg Clark, Adam Cockie and Joel Latham, who are renowned for defensive pressure. » Earl Spalding

WAFL players don special NAIDOC Round jumpers

2017 Colts Coaches AWARD

The West Australian Football League, in partnership with Rio Tinto, will celebrate the contributions that the Aboriginal community has made and continues to make to WA football when WAFL NAIDOC Round is held this Saturday, July 8. All WAFL clubs playing in the round will wear uniforms designed to represent the heritage of the club and their Aboriginal players and for the first time two WA Women’s Football League teams will also don NAIDOC designed jumpers. A NAIDOC football designed by Samantha Mitchell, daughter of Claremont Football Club great Michael Mitchell, and featuring the family names of some of the great Aboriginal players that have played in the WAFL, will be used for NAIDOC Round games. Special guests and activities will also feature at WAFL games to mark the occasion. WAFL General Manager Steve Hargrave said NAIDOC Week was a terrific opportunity for the competition to celebrate the magnificent contribution of Aboriginal players to the game. “Some of Western Australia’s most talented players of all time are Aboriginal and football is very fortunate to have had such a long and proud association with Aboriginal people,” Hargrave said. “Again this year, WAFL clubs will wear Aboriginal themed jumpers throughout NAIDOC Round to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and achievements in WA football. We would like to thank Rio Tinto for funding these jumpers.” WAFL clubs Claremont and South Fremantle initiated WAFL NAIDOC Round in 2007 when they wore jumpers designed by Aboriginal artist Richard Walley. The initiative was embraced by the entire competition in 2009.

East PerthThe two boomerangs represent offence and defense, and the past and present of the Aboriginal community.

Peel ThunderThe two boomerangs represent offence and defense, and the paw print represents the wild dog (dingo).

PerthThe Perth design infuses energy waves throughout the original red stripe to signify strength.

South FremantleThe design represents the Swan River, a significant feature to the Noongar people, and the symbols on the outside represent South Fremantle as the main meeting place where people come to play.

Educating regional umpires and umpire coachesMore than 55 regional umpires and umpire coaches will take part in professional development education sessions delivered by the West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) as part of this weekend’s WA Football Country Landmark Carnival. The sessions form part of the WAFC’s 2017 Umpiring Education Strategy which aims to improve the standard of umpiring across the state. The WAFC hosted an Advanced Umpire Coach Professional Development Course

earlier this year, and has also delivered a number of educational sessions in rural and regional WA. WAFC Umpire Development Manager Dean Margetts said the education session he held in Albany in March was a very fulfilling experience. “It was fantastic having 14 new boundary umpires who were enthusiastic to learn about the finer aspects of boundary umpiring,” he said. More than 50 umpires and umpire coaches in Geraldton got to hear from WAFL Umpire Manager Darryl Sinclair who provided an education session on umpire duty of care and development in May. WAFC Umpire Pathway Manager Tim Priest assessed two Greater Northern Football League (GNFL) umpire coaches deliver sessions to GNFL umpires to support their

coach accreditation to Advanced Umpire Coaching. During the same month, local football leagues in Tom Price, Broome and Kalgoorlie took part in respective educational sessions with Tim Priest on how to improve game-day environments. The sessions focused on law interpretation and the importance of decision-making. Earlier this year students at Central Midlands Senior High School in Moora got the opportunity to meet AFL umpires as part of the AFL Umpire Roadshow.

In the coming weeks, local umpires in Esperance and Busselton will get the chance to attend a question and answer panel discussion with WAFL League umpires ahead of the WAFL Round 17 and 18 fixtures in the regions.

In touch with the Community

This year Community TAB will give

over $4million to the DEPARTMENT

OF SPORT AND RECREATION to

support the WA sporting community,

from grass roots to elite athletes.

If the season continues to go the way it has for North Fremantle and Kingsway football clubs they are both set to become the WA A Grade competition’s newest competitors. Currently sitting in first and second position with 10 wins and two losses, the two clubs are two wins ahead of the rest of the B Grade competition. With just six rounds to go until the finals series the upcoming fixtures are in favour of both clubs with North Fremantle fixtured to play four teams currently outside of the top four while Kingsway play three teams outside the top four. The clubs came face to face in Round 8 with North Fremantle taking the win convincingly

by 51 points. Kingsway will get their chance to rectify the score when the two sides clash in the second last round of the year. If they are to make this year’s B Grade Grand Final North Fremantle will need to find a way to conquer Swan Athletic as their two losses have both been to the Herne Hill club. Kingsway has lost to Collegians and North Fremantle this season. North Fremantle has not been in A Grade since 2012 with their last premiership in 2003 while Kingsway have not played in the A Grade competition previously. There is still a long way to go until the grand final, however, with their recent form these teams look set to find themselves deep in the finals series.

Koorda continues to reignKoorda scored an exciting three-point win over Mukinbudin to move one game clear on top of the Central Wheatbelt ladder. Hayden Cooke was named best on ground while Brent McKeeken (three goals) and Robert Rout added good support for the winners. Best for Mukinbudin was Blake Smith and Liam Shadbolt, while Mathew Palm bagged three majors. Beacon have stormed home in the last quarter to upset Kalannie by 24-points with Alby Munns, Quentin Munns, Jay Munns and Joshua Munns all leading the way while Michael Davies and Kevin Chitty tried hard for the losers. The win over the second placed Kalannie now puts Beacon two games behind them in third place going into the weekends Landmark bye. Bencubbin have been forced to work hard to notch a 21-point victory over bottom of the ladder Nungarin-Towns. James Coe was the

stand out for Bencubbin while Brendan Davies and Damon Manuel were also among the best players. Taine Wilson and Khyle Ugle continued to battle hard for the improving Nungarin-Towns who have managed only one win and a draw that came in last week’s game with Beacon.

In all forms of cricket you must get 20 wickets to win a game. The fast bowlers are there to intimidate and dominate the batsmen, never let them settle. No one really likes facing QUICK bowling… NO ONE.

These men have dominated the worlds batsmen since the Early 70s. They are the best, they are the feared, they are... “The Fast Bowlers Cartel”
