Football 2014: Where to Look

Football is back in Washington ParishBY CHRIS KINKAIDTHE DAILY NEWS

The high school foot-ball regular season is always an exciting time and this season is no different, especially when you consider that four of our local teams Bogalusa, Franklinton, Varnado and Pine are all coming off of playoff seasons.

Those four are com-peting in jamborees either tomorrow or Friday.

Varnado and Pine are both in the Wildcats’ Jamboree tomorrow.

The first game fea-tures Pine battling East Feliciana before Varnado takes the field and goes against

Northlake Christian School which is in Covington.

The opener is set for 5:30 p.m.

Bogalusa and Franklinton are trav-eling to Mandeville to compete in the Skippers’ six-team Jamboree.

The first game fea-tures Bogalusa facing Salmen at 5 p.m.

Then Covington takes on John Curtis at 6:30 p.m.

The night cap has Franklinton going against host school Mandeville High in a game scheduled for 8 p.m.

Ben’s Ford and Bowling Green, compet-ing in the Mississippi

Association of Independent Schools, made runs at the play-offs, but were unable to reach postseason in 2013.

Both look to make runs beyond the regu-lar season this year, as both of them kicked off the regular season Friday.

Ben’s Ford was at home against New Orleans Home School and won 39-0. Bowling Green was also hosting and played Columbia Academy, but lost 36-7.

Both teams have new coaches. Cole Holden moved from offensive coordinator to the head coaching spot at Ben’s Ford, while Bowling Green welcomed in

David Currier, who was highly successful at Kentwood. He went 253-86, with two state titles, 20 district titles and a state runner-up in 26 years as the Kangaroos’ head coach.

Both schools resume their season in just two-days. Ben’s Ford is back home battling Amite School Center before the Eagles get their first road game the fol-lowing week against Columbia Academy.

Bowling Green played Columbia Academy in its opener. The Bucs are back home Sept. 5 to play Wilkerson Christian Sept. 5. It should be a fun 2014 season, so get out there and enjoy the games.

Ben’s Ford Christian School

BY CHRIS KINKAIDTHE DAILY NEWS

Ben’s Ford Christian School is looking for-ward to 2014 with a team that features 15 returning starters.

The Eagles are com-ing off of a 2013 cam-paign that saw them go 3-7 overall and 1-3 in District 6AA play.

Ben’s Ford has a new coach this year in Cole Holden, who was

an assistant last year. He replaces Tommy Pittman at the helm.

Pittman, who is also the Eagles’ baseball coach, is an assistant coach.

“I’m excited,” Holden said.

“This is the first time I’ve ever been a head football coach. It’s always been a passion of mine. I’m excited about it, I feel like the kids are excited about

it. We’re going to have a big senior class. There’s just a lot of excitement going on. Since I was here last year, there haven’t been a whole lot of changes. Coach Tommy, he was the head coach last year and he’s still on staff. We felt like we were doing things the right way last year and we’re going to continue doing things the same way.”

One-third of the 27

players on Ben’s Ford’s roster are seniors this season and five of the seven returning offen-sive players made all-district in 6AA last sea-son in seniors Aaron Taylor, Destin Pittman, Jordan Thomas and Tyler Milner along with junior Daniel Pittman.

Taylor returns to the backfield at running back after being select-ed to the first team last season.

Taylor ran for 1,051 yards on 175 carries (six yards per attempt) and 12 touchdowns last season.

“Aaron’s going to be our tailback, no doubt about it,” Holden said. “It’s going to be his senior year. He works extremely hard for us. He rushed for 1,000 yards last year, first 1,000-yard rush-er in school history. We’re excited to have him back there. He’s worked his (tail) off in the weight room and put a little weight on. I’m excited to see him back there.

Holden said Destin Pittman, who made the first team last season, is also going to get some touches at tailback.

Pittman played sev-eral positions last sea-son and proved to be a versatile player. His positions included quarterback, fullback, receiver, offensive tack-le, defensive end and linebacker.

Holden said Taylor, Pittman and junior wide receiver Corey Caldwell would all get touches at running back.

Holden said Caldwell can run.

“Corey’s a speed guy for us. He’s going to start at the X receiver for us, but he’s going to see some tailback. He’s more of a speed guy.” Holden said. “

Thomas (5-foot-11, 190) is the center and Milner (5-11, 225) starts at tackle.

The rest of the line is senior guard Culpepper (6-0, 190), sophomore

guard Jonathan Pierce (5-11, 180) and sopho-more tackle Robert Gaitan (6-3, 230).

“We’ve got some expe-rienced guys mixed with some young guys, but I feel like the young guys are here to play,” Holden said.

Holden said Thomas, who was a guard, moved to center.

Holden said center is a very important position in the Eagles’ offense.

“The center makes a lot of calls in our offense,” Holden said. “As far as protection goes, he makes calls. He makes some calls as far as screens go and then in the run game, he’s got several calls he has to make. It kind of all starts with him. The center in our offense has to make calls in the run game to let every-body else know what’s going on.”

The man under center is Daniel Pittman, who played wide receiver last season.

“Daniel’s had a real good summer,” Holden said.

“He looked well in 7-on-7s, and he’s pro-gressed. Daniel has a fairly strong arm, and Daniel is an athlete. He can move around in the pocket, and he’s smart. He runs our offense well and he’s a dedicat-ed kid.”

Besides Caldwell the rest of the guys he’ll be throwing to who are starting are senior Josh Moss and junior Garrett Pounds.

Moss came over to Ben’s Ford from Bogalusa High.

“He brings a lot to the table,” Holden said. “You can tell that the kid has a passion for

the game. He loves it. He’s got an outstanding work ethic and I can tell by the little bit of time we’ve had him that he was well groomed. He’s been well coached. He runs great routes. It took him about one 7-on-7 for us to com-pletely understand the secondary. He’s done an outstanding job and we’re happy to have him on both sides of the ball. He helps us out a lot.”

Holden said Moss would probably return kickoffs and punts.

Holden said Moss did really well in 7-on-7s.

Defensively, the Eagles will base out of the 3-4 this season, switching from the 4-4.

Two all-district play-ers return out of the eight returners in line-backers Culpepper and Thomas.

The other two line-backers are senior Connor Gallaspy and junior Cole Williams.

Thomas and Gallaspy will be playing the inside position.

Cole Williams and Culpepper are the out-side guys along with sophomore Andrew Smith.

Two of the three line-men are returners in Milner and Destin Pittman along with Gaitan, will play both offense and defense because of the smaller roster.

Holden said they would have a big rota-tion on the line.

Holden said Culpepper, sophomores C.J. McClelland and Carter Stewart along with junior Kirkland Creel also seeing time on the defensive line.

Destin Pittman is han-dling all of the kicking duties, placekicking, punts and kickoffs.

Ben’s Ford opened the season Friday with a vic-tory over New Orleans Homeschool 39-0.

The Eagles are back home Friday against Amite School Center.

Following the game against ASC, the Eagles play three of the next four contests on the road.

Ben’s Ford travels to play against Columbia Academy Sept. 5, Centreville Sept. 19 and Heidelberg Sept. 26.

The one home game in that stretch is against Prentiss Christian Sept. 12.

Bogalusa High School

Jacks enter 2014 with more experienceBY CHRIS KINKAIDTHE DAILY NEWS

A more experienced team returns to the field for Bogalusa in anticipation of the 2014 season, which features a group of players who got a lot of valuable experience in a playoff season last year.

Bogalusa made the playoffs as the No. 27 seeded team last season but lost, 33-0, to sixth- seeded Richwood.

Coach Craig Jones, who enters his ninth season as the Lumberjacks coach and has been to the play-offs six times, said the postseason experience

is valuable.“Being on a stage like

that, being able to trav-el and sit there, I hope they learned from the situation,” Jones said. “I know I learned some things I would do dif-ferently from the situ-ation put in there with an inexperienced team that’s going like that.

I think it will help and I think it’s left a bad taste in our mouths.”

Jones added that they’ve been working hard in the offseason.

The Lumberjacks had just 13 seniors on last year’s roster, but this season Bogalusa has a group of starters fea-turing 21 players who

are either juniors or seniors includes just one sophomore.

“We were young, a lot of first year starters last year,” Jones said.

“We have a lot return-ing at the skill posi-tions both offensively and defensively.”

Jones said the expe-rience is a plus, but

one of the keys is team chemistry.

“That’s what we’ve been pushing all offsea-son is working together as a team,” Jones said.

Page 16: Football 2014

Offensively, Bogalusa has a great quarter-back situation with senior Reggie Roberts and junior Tymothy Toussaint.

Roberts was a second-team all-district quar-terback last season.

When Toussaint is not the quarterback, he’ll be at the wide receiver position.

At this time last sea-son, the quarterback job was up for grabs because of injury, but now Jones said they have two players and the coaching staff feels very comfortable with either signal caller.

Jones spoke about the attributes of both sig-nal callers.

“Reggie is an athlete. He can run and Tym, he can run as well, but he is a better passer than Reggie,” Jones said.

“Even though we run a spread system, either one that’s in there, there’s a slight differ-ence of plays we’re try-ing to run.”

Bogalusa has a lot of depth at running back.

Jones said they have a lot of different styles of running backs, who all have different tal-ents.

Jones said they would roll with who’s hot.

“We have a lot of flex-ibility,” Jones said. “We’ll be able to do some things on offense, which we never have done before, move peo-ple around and change up the pace of things.”

The receivers include one returning starter in Toussaint.

Senior Tyran Holloway moves to tight end and the club has two transfers in junior Philip Cannon from California and junior Dionte Fernandez from Mississippi.

Jones also said they have two youngsters who played junior varsity and are ready to step up, including Darnell Harris and Jymon Jackson.

“Jy got a little play-ing time last year as a freshman, so they’ll mature, got stronger and I think they’re ready to take on that challenge of playing out there on the perimeter. Now, we’ll have some playmakers out there, so that should help the offense as well where you can’t just focus on us running the ball.”

The offensive line has just one senior in right tackle Martiez Elzie.

The rest of the line is all juniors in right guard Zachary Saraceno, cen-ter Jonathan Simmons

and on the left side of the line, tackle Devonte Lenoir and guard Daniel Fairly.

Jones said all of them got playing time last season.

“The difference is, all five of them have never all started together,” Jones said.

“They started at some point in time in the season last year, but as a group, they never started together at one time, so they’ve been gelling, trying to cre-ate that chemistry this summer and it started in the spring.”

Switching to defense, the line features return-ing starters in strong-side end Holloway and senior tackle Rodarrius Pittman.

Holloway was an all-district honorable men-tion last season.

When Jones was interviewed, the other two defensive line spots were still up for grabs.

The linebackers are all returners in senior William Toussaint, junior Urian Morris and sophomore Javon Tate.

Toussaint was a sec-ond-team all-district linebacker last season.

“We’re just picking up and watching film on what we need to improve on and that’s our open-field tackling and just tackling peri-od. All three of those guys started last year, so that’s bringing expe-rience there,” Jones said.

None of the four defensive backs are returning starters.

Jones said they were still working out the starting corners.

He said Jackson and Fernandez were start-

ing during the sum-mer, but four others stepped up, including sophomore Salehal-Dien Pittman, sopho-more Devonte King, sophomore Devontre King and sophomore Dominique Tillman.

Jones said those four forced a competition at that spot with the way they stepped up.

Jones said the com-petition would play itself out. The safeties are the quarterbacks Roberts and Tymothy Toussaint.

One of the things he’s looking for from his defense is creating more turnovers.

Junior Sean Forbes is the Lumberjacks kick-er and punter.

Jones said one of the keys to this season is staying healthy.

“Three things we’ve been focusing on all of the time are number 1 paying attention to the details on-and-off the field. Number 2 is preparation. You have to prepare yourself for class, school, prepare yourself for the work-outs, prepare yourself for the workouts, which will prepare you for the game. Number 3 is just being disciplined in all aspects.”

Bogalusa opens the season at home for three of the first four games. The Lumberjacks host Kentwood, Pine and Franklinton Sept. 5, 19 and 26 respectively with a road trip to West St. John Sept. 12.

Bogalusa opens October with a road game against Miller-McCoy before return-ing home for two in District 8-3A action against Amite and Jewel Sumner.

Bowling Green hoping for better results in 2014BY CHRIS KINKAIDTHE DAILY NEWS

Bowling Green has a new coach this season and is ready to roll in 2014, hoping to turn things around after fin-ishing below .500 a sea-son ago.

The Buccaneers, a member of the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools, enters 2014 after a 4-5 season that saw them split their four District AA games.

During the offsea-

son, Bowling Green got a new coach in David Currier, who comes to the school after a stel-lar career at Kentwood.

The first-year Bowling Green coach recorded a 253-86 record (74.6 winning percent-age) with two state titles (1997 and 1998), a state runner up (1999 and 2003) and 20 district titles in 26 years as the Kangaroos head coach. He also guided his club to 12 state semifinals.

“We definitely need to get more physical and

get stronger,” Currier said when asked of his first impressions of the team. “We are going to be young with a lot of energy and they’re working hard. Sometimes, you come into a new program and it’s hard to break older kids into your system. It’s a lot easier to break the younger kids and motivate and mold them into what you want to do in your system. So that’s good in a way with having a young team.”

Currier said the older and younger players are buying into the sys-tem and also said the Bucs have some good young talent.

Currier said that dur-ing the spring game against Ben’s Ford Christian School, he felt his team was not physical.

He said one of his assistants, Hutch Gonzales, who played at Covington High School, Southeastern Louisiana University and at the professional

level in several leagues, including with the New Orleans Voodoo of the Arena Football League, is helping get the guys stronger and more physical.

“That’s going to be key,” Currier said. “No matter what you do offensively, defensive-ly and no matter how many years of experi-ence I have, you have to put some players on the field that are physical and play. That’s anoth-er key. We’re going to have to be in shape to

play four quarters.”Being in shape will

probably be a little more important for the Bucs, who have just 28 players on their ros-ter, meaning several players will be playing on both offense and defense.

Currier said the small roster fits in with what he did at Kentwood.

“We always played both ways. Practice has worked out, and we didn’t have a lot of coaches,” Currier said.

The team used a

Page 23: Football 2014

FOOTBALL 2014 AUGUST 27, 2014 23The Daily News

spread offense last sea-son but will be using a pro set, one back style, which will also see some shotgun sets.

Currier said they will be using a tight end in a lot of sets.

Junior Matt Pierce, who will also start at linebacker, is the tight end.

Senior Brady Goings is the team’s quarter-back this season.

Last year, Connor McCain, who is a senior this season, was the team’s signal caller.

This year, McCain will be starting at free safety.

McCain will also see time at free safety and possibly at wide receiv-er.

McCain made an

impact at the team’s scrimmage at safety earlier this month, intercepting a pass and making life rough on Amite School Center’s passing game with pass breakups and he did a good job of being around the ball.

The running back is senior Grant Alexander with senior Cody Wilhite the fullback.

Wilhite, who didn’t play last season, will also see some time at linebacker.

“He played baseball and came out in the spring,” Currier said.

He showed a lot of promise offensively and defensively. He’s going to back up at line-backer, and he may be one of our starting run-

ning backs.”The wide receiv-

ers are junior Jace Ball, senior Brady Goings and sophomore Cameron Cowart.

Moving to the offen-sive line, junior Drake Spears (6-foot-1, 255 pounds) is the center.

He is flanked by sophomore guards Nathan Case (5-5, 150), the left guard, and Ray Magruder (5-9, 170), the right guard.

Junior Mason McElveen (6-0, 310) is the left tackle, with sophomore Jacob Brumfield (6-0, 260) handling the right tack-le spot.

Defensively, the Bucs will operate out of a base 4-4.

“I think we’re going

to better, a little bit more physical and I think we’ve got some guys that can play, can hit and I think we’re going to be OK there,” Currier said.

The line features Spears and Brumfield in the tackle spots. Senior Darren Lockhart and junior Chris Waskom are playing the defen-sive end positions for Bowling Green.

The starting lineback-ers juniors Pierce and Jack Bickham outside and sophomore Brock Faust inside along with sophomore Brandon McElveen.

McElveen is filling in for junior Hayden Thompson, who will miss about four weeks, because of a knee inju-

ry.The corners are

Alexander and junior Brody Schilling.

McCain is the free safety.

Currier said Goings is pretty good at extra points and added that kickoffs weren’t decid-ed yet.

Currier said the big-gest goal this year was to have a winning sea-son and keep getting better each week.

Bowling Green opened its season with a 36-7 loss to Columbia Academy Friday. The Buccaneers contin-ue their season with their first road con-test Friday in a match up against the Oak Forest Academy Yellow Jackets.

They return home to play Wilkerson Christian School Academy and then head on the road to face Brookhaven.

Bowling Green’s first District 6AA contest is against Silliman Institute at home Sept. 19. After that, the Buccaneers begin a three-game road trip, facing Trinity Sept. 26 and District 6AA oppo-nent Centreville Oct. 3.

The final of those games is right here in Washington Parish against Ben’s Ford Christian School’s Eagles. That game occurs Oct. 10. After a bye week, the Bucs wrap up the regular season against Central Private Oct. 24.

Raiders attempting to reach the postseason for second straight year

BY CHRIS KINKAIDTHE DAILY NEWS

The start of a new season is upon us and things are looking good at Pine for the Raiders.

The team comes into this season after reach-ing the playoffs for the first time since 2006.

The Raiders lost a heartbreaker to Rosepine 51-50, as Rosepine scored with eight seconds left and then converted the two-point conversion and ending a 4-7 season for Pine.

Pine coach Bradley Seal enters his third season at the helm and said the Rosepine game is motivation for this season.

Seal said he watched the game film right after, but hasn’t since.

“Anytime we need to kind of turn up the intensity or anytime we need to refocus or anything, that’s all we have to say and bring up Rosepine,” Seal said. “You can see it in the kids’ eyes that this is what we did and they know the mistakes we made. Anytime it’s one of those mistakes we made against Rosepine, they’re ready to fix it. Anytime we bring that up, you can see it in their eyes. They’re ready for the season. They’re ready to right that wrong because we feel like we were the better team.”

Fast forwarding to this season, the Raiders have a lot to be excited about. The team lost just four seniors in

Nick Adcox, Ted Crain, Trevor Stuart and Devin Phillips.

The Raiders are returning 14 starters, eight on offense and six on defense. Six of them were all-district play-ers.

The biggest name returning is senior Derrick Dillon, who verbally committed to the University of Florida this summer.

Dillon, who plays mainly quarterback, kicker and safety, is coming off a year during which he ran for 2,434 yards on 196 carries (12.4 yards per attempt) and an astounding 33 touchdowns.

He also threw for 903 yards on 57-of-120 with seven TDs with just two picks.

Over the last two sea-sons, Dillon has turned the ball over just six times (four intercep-tions and two fumbles).

Last season, Dillon was the co-MVP of District 8-2A with Northlake Christian School quarterback Josh O’Rear.

Dillon was also named a Class 2A All-State team by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Seal said the big thing with Dillon at signal caller is there are no worries at quarterback.

“You know what you’re getting,” Seal said.

“You know you’re getting explosive plays. It’s gonna happen. It’s happened every game that I’ve been here with him at quarterback.

You’re just going to get a lot of production from the quarterback and when that happens, the offense is going to be productive. We’re thrilled to get him back one more year.”

The Raiders also have experience at the rest of the skill positions, as the projected starters at running, and wide receiver are returning except one in junior Lowell Pittman.

Adarrius Berry comes back at running back after running for 350 yards last season.

“Adarrius compli-ments Derrick (Dillon) well back there. He’s got great vision running the ball. He’s a good blocker for Derrick, and that’s something we really put a lot of emphasis on. Derrick’s going to get the bulk of the carries, but Adarrius is consistent with his running game. He’s going to get you five yards, and he’s going to block, and he’s going to do well in pass protection. That’s what we want out of our run-ning back right now,” Seal said.

Seal feels his wide receiving corps is about six deep with guys, who can get on the field and give them production.

The three returning starters from that group are senior Devonta Pigott, Paul Gatusso and Tory Robertson.

Pigott was a dual threat last season. The first-team all-district player caught 450 yards of passes and ran for 250.

Robertson ran for 300 yards.

“Devonta’s coming back. He’s a first-team all-district. He’s a big-play threat,” Seal said. “Paul Gatusso and Tory Robertson from starting last year and each one of them brings their own set of skills to the table and each one of them is going to be a big part of our offense this year.”

Seal said Pigott is their big-play guy, Robertson is explosive, and Seal described Gatusso as “Mr. Reliable.”

“(Gatusso) is going to run good routes and catch the ball,” Seal said. “He’s prob-ably not going to wow you or anything, but he’s going to make a big third down catch to keep a drive going. He’s maybe one of the more important ones of the three (returning start-ers) because anytime we need something, we can go to him.”

Gatusso is also slated to handle the punting duties.

Moving to the offen-sive line, the Raiders have three starters back in senior right guard Jake Miller (6-feet, 250 pounds), senior center Chris Brown (6-1, 330) and junior left tackle Brandon Jones (5-11, 250).

Brown and Jones made second-team all-district last season. Junior Kabartis Ginn and freshman left guard

Brennon Kelly are the new comers to the start-ing linup on the offen-sive line.

“Devin Phillips was our only loss,” Seal said. “We slide Chris Brown over to center and put in Brennon Kelly, a freshman com-ing in, who could do big things the next four years for us. Everybody else stays the same. With the big physical group, we expect a lot of them. We have a lot of experience, size and strength on the offen-sive line this year.”

Defensively, the Raiders are looking to improve from last year when they allowed 28 or more points in seven of the 11 games.

The Raiders are switching from a mul-tiple set to a base 4-4.

One of the big prob-lems for the club last

season was tackling. Coach Seal said the

team didn’t have a lot of seniors defensively and felt they were physical-ly weak.

This year, they have eight seniors.

“I think a lot of those guys needed another year in the weight room,” Seal said. “We’ve had good summer workouts in the weightroom. We worked hard, so getting bigger and stronger is going to be the key. Then confidence. As the season started last year, we were playing well and as the season went on, after one game to the next, our confi-dence took a shot and we just weren’t play-ing fast and we weren’t playing with a lot of confidence on defense. I think this year with everybody coming

back, I think they understand their role a little bit more and can play their positions a little better.”

One of the key guys coming back is senior linebacker Tyrais Robinson, who tore his ACL in practice prior to the season and missed the year.

“The defense never really looked right after that,” Seal said. “We get him back at (inside) linebacker. His presence and leader-ship will go a long way in helping our defense get better.”

Junior Markell Dillon (5-9, 225) is one of the eight returning starters on defense and was a second-team all-district player last year. The other four returning starters on defense are senior linemen Seth Brown (6-2, 270) and

Jake Miller (6-2, 250), along with senior line-backer Dustin Provost and strong safety Derrick Dillon.

Seal said they must improve to take the next step.

He felt they had a strong spring with senior linebacker Grady McDaniel and sophomore cornerback Chris Gordon being the high points.

Both of them are newcomers to the defensive lineup along with junior lineman Brandon Jones (5-11, 250), senior linebacker Matt Stuart (6-2, 195), and senior corner Blake Nielson.

This year’s sched-ule features six home games out of the nine on this year’s schedule.

The Raiders begin with home contests right off of the bat.

The first five con-tests are in Washington Parish and four of the first five at Pine.

Also, the Raiders do not play away from Pine for more than one week at any point in the schedule.

The Raiders open the season at home against Pearl River Sept. 5, followed by Varnado Sept. 12 before a trip to Bogalusa Sept. 19 to face the Lumberjacks.

District 8-2A begins for the Raiders Sept. 26 with a pair of home games against Archbishop Hannan and St. Thomas Aquinas. League play goes until the end of the regular season. After the game against St. Thomas Aquinas, Pine leaves the parish for the first time and plays at Pope John Paul II Oct. 10.

Varnado High School

Much more experienced Wildcats ready to embark on 2014BY CHRIS KINKAIDTHE DAILY NEWS

The Varnado Wildcats are ready for the 2014 season, as 17 starters return from last year’s team, which made it to postseason play.

Varnado coach Scott Shaffett, who enters his third season with a 3-17 record at Varnado, said the biggest thing they’ve got is experi-ence.

“I’ve got Delrick (Abrams) and J.J. (Williams) at QB. They’ve got experi-ence,” Shaffett said. “At running back, I’ve got Nick Darden, Tyrandis Crosby and Travon Stokes at wingback.

They all got to play last year and are returning starters.

They will split time at wingback.

At fullback we’ve got Wilbert Gray and Dearious Parker. They both play a lot of full-back last year.”

The Wildcats enter this campaign after going 2-9 last season.

That includes the 35-20 playoff loss to Arcadia in the bi-dis-trict round of the state playoffs. Arcadia ended up losing to eventual state champion and top seeded Haynesville in the next round 66-0.

The Wildcats dealt with several injuries on a young team in

2013, including their quarterback Delrick Abrams, who is a junior this season. Abrams missed part of the sea-son under center but did play other positions and helped the Wildcats in different ways.

Abrams, a first-team all-district defensive back last season, did a great job at safety, where he was a ball hawk, intercepting seven passes.

J.J. Williams, a fresh-man, stepped in and picked up some valu-able experience.

Shaffett said both guys would play.

“I’ve got both quar-terbacks returning, so I expect both guys to

have a lot of playing time,” Shaffett said.

“Unfortunately, we lost Delrick at quarter-back for most of the sea-son due to an injury in the first week.”

Shaffett said Abrams is 100 percent now and looked good dur-ing their spring game against St. Thomas Aquinas, and Shaffett said Abrams did really well in 7-on-7.

The coach said both Abrams and Williams are athletic.

“J.J. is still young, but he has a good throw-ing arm, and he’s very smart,” Shaffett said. “I don’t think we’ll skip a beat. I’m going in with Delrick as my starter,

but we want to move him around. He’s going to be playing wingback, wide receiver, and he’ll also be our starting safety. It also allows me to use J.J. in differ-ent positions. J.J. will be playing some wing back and wide receiver as well.”

Shaffett said the quar-terback situation gives the team more versatil-ity.

Delrick might be a lit-tle faster and more ath-letic, but JJ gives you a good passing style,” Shaffett said.

“He’s smart and knows the offense. The team looks up to him and they have as much confidence in J.J. as

they do in Delrick.”Besides Williams and

Abrams, the receiving corps includes fresh-man Armontee Kemp, senior Demontrey Mingo, sophomore Andre Jones and junior D.J. Jefferson.

We’re mature in that area and Mingo is one of our seniors, so hope-fully he steps up and shows senior leader-ship on the field more than anywhere else with some big catches,” Shaffett said.

Shaffett feels his offensive line will be much improved.

The returners are senior left tackle Ardale McGowan (6-feet-0, 170 pounds), junior guard

Page 31: Football 2014

Kyle Slocum (5-10, 205), senior right tackle Tyvonta Fortenberry (5-9, 235) and sopho-more guard Blake Fornea (5-10, 220).

Slocum made second-team all-district at offensive lineman last year.

McGowan will also play defensive end.

The newcomers to the line are senior cen-ter LeShon Whitson, who along with junior Nick Blackburn (5-10, 220),will be rotating with McGowan.

Shaffett said Slocum and Fornea are very intelligent and added that with them, it’s like having coaches on the

field.Defensively, Shaffett

is excited about having his middle linebacker sophomore Damon Kirsch returning. Kirsch was a second-team all-district line-backer in 2013.

“Between Damon and Delrick Abrams, they are my leaders on defense because they led us in tackles last year. Damon led us in tackles and Delrick wasn’t far behind and he intercepted seven passes.”

Another linebacker who is back is Dearius Parker.

The defensive ends are McGowan and

Fortenberry. New to the team at defensive tackle is junior Kel Collins.

McGowan was a sec-ond-team all-district defensive lineman last season

Shaffett said Collins had a great spring and they have high expecta-tions for him.

Defensive back has the least about of expe-rience.

Besides having Abrams at safe-ty, Shaffett said Blackburn, Crosby, Mingo and Kemp will be rotating at corner-back.

When asked the key to this season being

successful, Shaffett said one of the things is staying healthy.

“That’s going to be the biggest thing,” Shaffett said. “We’ve got to stay healthy and we’ve got to execute and eliminate penalties and turnovers.”

Varnado begins the 2014 campaign at home Sept. 5, hosting Dexter, a school in Mississippi. The Wildcats continue their season with the first of two straight road games Sept. 12 against Pine. The fol-lowing contest is Sept. 19 against Jewel Sumner. VHS returns home to play Albany and Pearl River.

Franklinton returns 14 starters after strong seasonBY CHRIS KINKAIDTHE DAILY NEWS

Franklinton had a strong season in 2013, and the Demons return 14 of their 22 starters for the 2014 campaign.

Last season, Franklinton posted a 10-3 record and reached a Class 4A quarterfi-nals before falling to state runner-up Edna Karr. The three teams the Demons lost to, East Jefferson, Karr, and Covington proved to be some of the best in the state. East Jefferson went on to capture the state title, while Karr lost to East Jefferson in the finals and Covington reached the Class 5A semis but was just a point away from a chance to play

for it allJunior Mike Wilson

is the starting quar-terback. Last season, Wilson saw limited action as backup to the now graduated Ron Robinson. Wilson threw for 57 yards a touch-down on 13 attempts.

Franklinton coach Shane Smith, who enters his 16th season as the head coach with a 120-56 record (.681 winning percentage) with 15 playoff appear-ances, two state final appearances and a state title (2010), said Wilson is a big, strong signal caller with a good arm.

“I think one of the benefits to Mike and one of the things that I think works in his favor is that in previ-ous years, our quar-

terbacks played other positions,” Smith said. “They didn’t get that fundamental work at that position. Mike hasn’t had that. He’s been only a quarter-back for two years now. We feel like he’s developed and we feel his work and his skills have prepared him for this.”

The backup QB is freshman Tajh Magee. Smith said Magee is barely scratching the surface with what he can be at quarterback at the high school level.

“He’s got a lot of poten-tial,” Smith said. “He’s got the right demeanor, and he’s got a calm atti-tude. He’s athletic with a good arm.”

Renaz Wilson han-dles the running back

duties. Last season, Wilson ran for 1,115 yards on 188 carries (5.9 yards per carry) and 14 touchdowns and earned first-team all-district honors. He also added nine catches for 30 yards. Wilson will be running behind a strong offensive line, which returns three starters in senior tackle Adrian Magee (6-foot-4, 300 pounds), who has verbally committed to LSU and was named an all-state player by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, senior guard Lance Ragas (6-2, 280) and guard senior P.J. Burkhalter (6-3, 300), a second-team all-district player last season. The two newcomers to the starting line are

both juniors in tackle Deante Cotton (6-1, 275) and center Zach Ginn (5-10, 230).

“The thing that jumps out is the size of those guys,” Smith said. “Size is important, but is only one of the ele-ments of the offensive line. You want guys that are quick and can do different things for you. Our guys are big and physical, so the main thing is just con-tinuing to get in shape, get quick and develop continuity.”

Two of the three wide receivers are retuning senior D’Andre Allen, an all-district honor-able mention in 2013 and junior Azende T. Magee, a first-team all-district player in 2013, with junior Chandler

Davis the newcomer to the lineup.

Last season, Magee caught a team-leading 29 passes for 427 yards and six touchdowns, while Allen made five receptions for 97 yards and Davis had four catches for just seven yards.

“What I look for in a good receiving corps are guys that comple-ment each other,” Smith said. That’s something that our guys do and I think will be a bonus for us this year.”

Switching to defense, the Demons bring back eight starters after allowing just an aver-age of 13.2 points per game last season.

“I think we’ve got a talented group that’s physical,” Smith said. “This spring we tack-led well. We’ve got good experience at every position and guys that if they stay hungry can be a good unit.”

The line features two returning starters in seniors Jonathan Crain and Dalton Talley with junior Kobe Crain new to the lineup. Crain, who was a first-team all-district player last season, will be missed at the outset of the season after he broke his humerus bone this summer. It’s not known exactly when Crain will return. Smith said the line has strong players with experience. He said they are active and more than capable of making plays.

The linebackers are junior Relik Wilson, senior Justin Alford and junior Damien Dawson, who all started last sea-son and Devin Elzie is new to the lineup. Wilson was a second-team all-district player last year. Three of the four starters at defen-sive back are returning in senior Josh Magee,

junior Martavius James, a second-team all-district player in 2013, and sophomore Marcus Conerly. Senior Percy Briggs is new to the lineup along with junior Tremario Magee are new to the lineup.

Magee, a first-team all-district player in 2013, leads the group after making 32 tack-les with five picks and eight passes defensed.

“Josh is a three-year starter with a ton of experience. He under-stands what we’re try-ing to do. He’s athletic and makes plays for us,” Smith said.

Smith said the key for this season is to try and improve day-in and day-out and not beat themselves, which he said involves being a hard-nosed disciplined team.

“We’ve got ability and experience at every position. If we don’t lose sight of improving day-in and day-out, who knows how good we can be? We need to stay focused on what we can control and if we can do that, we can have a good season,” Smith said.
