The food production is a complex, global collectiveof diverse businesses that together supply much of the food energy consumed by the world population.

According to a Corporate Catalyst India (CCI)

survey, India is the second largest producer of foodand holds the potential to be the biggest on globalfood and agriculture canvas.

The food industry in India comprises food

production and the food processing industry. Thefood processing industry is one of the largest inIndia – it is ranked fifth in terms of production,consumption, export and expected growth.

Processed food sales worldwide are approximatelyUS$3.2 trillion(2004)

In the U.S., consumers spend approximately US$1

trillion annually on food , or nearly 10 percent of the

Gross Domestic Product(GDP).

Over 16.5 million people are employed in the food

industry.

In the United Kingdom, the food industry is extensive.It is the largest manufacturing sector in the UK .Around

13% of the people working in manufacturing in the UK

work in the food and drink industry.

According to a report by a leading industrybody and Technopak, The Indian food industry

is projected to grow by US$ 100 billion to US$300 billion by 2015.

During the period, the share of processed foodin terms of value is expected to increase from43 per cent to 50 per cent.

Food processing industry is of enormous significance

for India's development as it has linked economy,industry and agriculture in India, efficiently andeffectively.As per a competitiveness report of the NationalManufacturing Competitiveness Council ,there are25, 367 registered food processing units in thecountry whose total invested capital is Rs 84,094crore .This information was given by Dr Charan Das

Mahant, the Minister of State for Food ProcessingIndustries, in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.The food processing sector is presently growing at anaverage rate of 13.5 % p.a. The Vision Document 2015envisages increasing the value addition from 20% to35%.

The ready-to-eat (RTE) segment stands at US$ 17 million to US$ 22 million and is

growing rapidly at 30 per cent per annum.

Mother Dairy is not the only firm offering the new platter of deep-freezing snacks.

From Godrej Tyson Foods' Yummiez brand , Canadian French fries , giant McCain ,

India Equity Partners are cooking up new food offerings.

Amul has been ranked as the first Indian Brand, in the list of the top 1,000 brands in

Asia by The Campaign Magazine, published from Hong Kong and Singapore.

Amul is also ranked the No.1 dairy brand, ahead of leading food and dairy brands of 

the Asian region, including Dutch Lady, Dumex and Magnolia

Cooperative dairy giant Amul aims to expand its presence out of India.

It is considering opening a processing facility in the US and subsequently in the

European market.

The Centre plans to set up 30 food parks in various States with the aim of 

helping small and medium industries in the sector to grow.

The parks have been proposed to be set up by the Ministry of FoodProcessing Industries and this will help 20,000 small and medium industriesengaged in the manufacturing and processing of food products every year.

The size of the food processing industry is likely to grow from US$ 200 billionat present to US$ 310 billion by 2015.

The Ministry of Food Processing Industries has allocated Rs 595 crore (US$126 million) for different schemes to be implemented in the food processingsector during 2011-12.

The Ministry has also sanctioned a cold storage chain facility in Kamrupdistrict and a mega food park in Nalbari, among other schemes in the North-Eastern (NE) region of India.

The Union budget 2011-12 has also allocated US$ 135 million to the FoodProcessing Ministry from the previous US$ 90 million.

India's consumption growth story is expected to maintain its course of 

about 14 per cent growth over the next three years.

Mr Pranab Mukherjee, the Union Finance Minister has expressed theneed to explore innovative approaches to sustain high growth withstability.

The Government of India had also announced Vision 2015, which laysfocus on enhancing the competitiveness of food processing industry inboth domestic as well as international

markets along with ensuring stable income levels to farmers.

The Vision 2015 provides for enhancing the level of processing of perishable to 20 per cent, enhancing value addition to 35 per cent andincreasing the share in global food trade from 1.5 per cent to 3 percent, by 2015.

The Indian food processing industry needs at least US$ 35billion fresh investments across sectors.

This will enable the industry to create the projected ninemillion jobs, stability in food prices, reasonable returns tofarmers and other stakeholders, and more importantly, toincrease India's share in the world export market forprocessed foods from the current 2%. 

Major players in India's fast-moving consumer goods(FMCG) industry will continue to pursue acquisitions overthe medium term.

India remains an attractive market, with its growingeconomy, large population that offers considerable scopefor additional geographic penetration, particularly in therural areas.
