    Do You Know your Charleston?

I went to two celebrations o liewithin a week. Ill be honest withyou, I cant abide that term. So

oten it resonates with open casketunerals. In this case, however, whatI went to were, indeed, celebrationso lie. Te rst was or my riendTomas Bird Weatherord. Birdwas roughly 57-59. I had no idea hewas sick.

I remember the rst time I saw

Tomas Weatherord at the Hobcaw Yacht Club in the bright Januarysunshine. He went to MoultrieHigh while I was a boardingschool brat, but Bird and I hadsomething in common. We wereboth dipsomaniacs. We rented a loto Budweiser in our time with a loto dierent people.

And a lot o them were at thereception. It was packed with

doctors, lawyers and Indian chies;the burghers who had caught arocksh or moved bales rom shrimpboats with Bird 30 years ago. Te tone othe place was set by a picture o Bird anda riend, passed out with unspilled beersstill in their hands where pictures o thegrandkids would normally be. Its exactlyas it should have been.

    I k h ld di

in the back room sense o the word, butthe people who know you; the people wholove you.

Tats why the second celebration olie I went to a ew days later meant somuch to me. Tose o who read my blogknow that my best riends six year old sonhas stage-4 cancer.

Many restaurants donated their excellentood and services. Te band played beachmusic. Tere were scores o small childrenwisely sent out to play in the mild Januaryevening. Probably the best picture o thenight would have been (had I brought mycamera) a number o ve year old girls(maybe 15?) who were dancing like snake

Just as quickly, I saw these littlgirls as young women, dancing inthe same spot to the same musi with the same hopes and ears atheir grandparents.

Kai is a handsome, smart childIn my minds eye, I saw him sweepthe best looking girl o her eet. Inmy minds eye, I saw him clothed intails, dancing with the same girl in awedding gown.

I have been told that I am sneakinpast the graveyard, but I dont thinkso. I really dont. Alhambra was apacked as Ive ever seen it. I you ara believer, the prayers alone wouldsee the day through.

Unortunately, the prayers wonpay the bills. I am asking or youhelp. I am asking everyone romBeachcomber Road to River, romIon to Station 28 1/2, rom Eas

Arctic and 10th to go to helporkaiorg.

Really look through the site. I believmy goal o dancing at Kai Duttonwedding can be achieved, but not withouyour help.

    Remember your grandmothers or

mothers patchwork quilt? All thoserandom pieces would come together tocreate a beautiul visual pattern. PeterJacksons Te Lovely Bones looks like oneo those quilts, but eels more like anawkward patchwork.

Based on the beloved novel by AliceSebold, we take a journey through the eyeso Susie Salmon (Saoirse Ronan), a 14-yearold girl who was raped and murdered bya serial killer. Susie spends most o thelm in the in-between, which is an

ever-changing psychedelic landscape onature. Mix this with the over-the-top 70sashions that dominate the eye and youare transported into a lm experience thateels dreamlike and disconnected. You

eel lost at times and I wonder i this waswhat Jackson and director o photographyAndrew Lesnie intended.

Unortunately, the story was lost in allo the overpowering images and Jacksonasks something o his audience that isway too aretched: A 14 year old girl wasraped and murdered. Tis is something

pretty horric, but the audience doesntseem to have the opportunity to connectemotionally. Susies mother (Rachel Weisz)and ather (Mark Wahlberg) should be ina state o utter loss, but both seem voido any real emotion as Susie stumblesthrough the lonely in-between. It seemsthat Mark Wahlbergs character was lostin the in-between with Susie; moving in asleepy and tired manner which reinorcesthe lack o emotion within the lm.

Jackson then wants us to believe that

the perverted serial killer (Stanley ucci),who wheels around homemade dollhouses,is never seen as a suspect. Really? A single,middle-aged man who makes dollhousesor little girls is interviewed by the police

and orgotten. It makes no sense.

Another aspect o the lm whichrequires too much rom the audienceis a strange teen romance betweenSusie and an older student. Tereis no background to make thisbelievable or the audience. Teyhave a ew interactions and we are

expected to believe that there is sucha strong bond between the two thathe actually sees her as she projectshersel rom the in-between to receiveher rst kiss.

Mixed-up in with all o these otherspeculative and emotionless storiesis Jacksons idea o comic relie: acheeky grandmother played by SusanSarandon. It is misguided and, likethe rest o the lm, a dusting o what the lm might have been i it

had the requisite depth required orbelievability.

Te lm Lovely Bonesis empty andshallow. Just a shadow o the wonderulbook rom which it sprang.

When alling, a very large pine tree has akind o terrible grandeur; crashing andsnapping its way to the ground. Being

near a large tree as it is alling can be a thrilling, rightening experience-a smoky-green, snappingexplosion o chlorophyll, cellulose, needles, cones andbark. Regular visitors to old-growth orests generallybecome wary during times o high wind, and withgood reason.

Tis is the cone o a potentially very tall pine

species, one o the tallest tree species in the orestso eastern North America. Mature individuals maybe well over 140 eet tall with trunk diametersreaching 14 eet. It occurs rom eastern Canada toManitoba, through the upper Midwest, and downthe Appalachian chain into northern Georgia. It doeswell in a variety o soil types and moisture gradients. It will occasionally orm nearly pure stands or it maygrow with an assortment o yellow-poplars, hemlocksand oaks. In the northern portion o its range, it canbe ound at low elevations (even sea level), whereasit preers higher elevations in the south. (oward the

southern end o its range, natural populations arerarely discovered ar rom the mountains. One recentdiscovery in South Carolina shows such a population30 miles east o Columbia in Sumter County, withinPoinsett State Park.) Te trees are long-lived withlarge, mature individuals sometimes living 400 yearsor more.

Its a distinctive pine, and its the only one inthe east whose needles are held in bundles o fve.Te needles, which grow up to fve inches long, arecommonly bluish green and pliable. Te bark issmooth on young trees and on the tops o old ones, while older bark is rough and blocky. Te attractiveseed cones are unusual or eastern pines as they arearound six inches long and relatively thin. Immaturecones are tightly closed and green, while the openones are deep brown and commonly a bit curved. Te

scales are smooth, prickle-ree and are oten whitenedat their tips, giving them a sort o rosted look.

Tis species quickly became prized as a timbersource ater the colonization o New England. Its woodis strong and durable, very light in color, and containsless resin that is ound in most other pines. Plentyo buildings in the 18th century were constructed olumber rom it, but due to a voracious appetite or itswood and indiscriminate logging, large, timber-sizedtrees are rarely ound today in extensive populations. It does well as a planted tree, growing quickly. On thedown side, it is subject to attack rom a number o

insect species as well as ungal rust. Nevertheless, it isa grand and beautiul part o our natural heritageperhaps Emersons perect tree.

    Letterfromthemayor

    Good morning or good evening,

Being a New Year, January has begun with a bang. It would seemthat January would be a slow month in City Hall, but to the contrary

there is much going on. Residents considering running or PublicOce began picking up their packets on January 19, 2010. Tatbeing said, April elections will be interesting. We have had several

water main breaks. Fortunately, the water was not o or too long inthe aected areas. Council approved the Public Saety Expansion and

we are moving orward with that project as quickly as possible beoreconstruction material costs rise.

Events or February include the 2nd Annual Folly Gras on February13, 2010. Watch or details or call Mary Cunningham at City Hall.On February 6, Folly Beach will host the Save the Light 5K and halmarathon run to raise money or the Morris Island Lighthouse. Seethe Folly Beach web site or more inormation on the run.

I want to talk a litt le about a new program we are trying to initiateto better control our litter and trash concerns. For now, we are callingit the Volunteer Civilian Police Patrol. Councilman McCarty andChie Boatwright are working the details so we can get the remaindero this program started this spring. We already have the VolunteerBeach Management Patrol in place and hope to build the VolunteerForce with various sections such as an Administrative Branch, Beachand Parking, and Roving Patrol just to name a ew. I you believeyou might be interested, please contact Councilman McCarty at CityHall.

Please stay tuned to City Hall and our website or updates onthe Construction o Folly Creek and Folly River Bridges, drainageprojects, and the ransportation Study. I you would like to read thereport rom Wilbur Smith and Associates, please call me and I willmake my copy available to you.

    Dear Editor:

City government can be much more eective or

the citizens o a community when those citizensplay an active role in the decision making processo that government. We are supposed to be acommunity governed by the people, or the people. For quite some time, Folly Beach City Council has beenstruggling with the decision concerning the expansiono City Hall. Recently, a public hearing was held or thecitizens to air their comments and concerns related to thismatter. Te announcement o this public hearing wasposted all around the City with adequate time and was inmany media outlets. i one didnt know about this hearing, they had to be in another world. Tis is a mammothproject by Folly Beach standards with potentially greatramifcations.

At the hearing, only approximately 20 - 25 residentsshowed up; less than 1% o the population. O thosepresent, only seven made any public comments. Tisis not a government by the people, or the people, but a mandated government by just a select ew.In a ew months - April 6 - well be electing Cityocials or a new term o oce. i youre not registeredto vote, please register. Ten cast your vote as you seeft without destructively criticizing any council member

or the decisions they made, either up or down. Aterthat, make an honest eort to get actively involved with

whats happening in City Hall. Lets move toward being acommunity that is governed by the people, or the people.

Tere are plenty o issues at Folly Beach,to be sure, and pet projects every now andthen, and even a good, salacious scandalrom time to time. Its why we call itFollitics, but every resident worth his saltknows the two enduring and seeminglyunsolvable problems at Folly are trafc andtrash, and City Council took a stab at bothwhen they met on January 26.

Is the trafc moving yet? With only Councilman Ellis dissenting, the ransportation Study conducted by

Wilbur Smith & Associates was acceptedand sent to the Planning Commission orurther renement.Te Planning Commission will holdmeetings and public hearings to seekcitizen input and meet in joint sessions

with Council beore implementing any othe projects, and some recommendationsmay be dropped entirely, according toCouncilman Dave Stormer. Stormerclassies the projects as mostly eitherhigh-impact/low-cost or high-impact/high-cost (presumably the low-impact/high-cost recommendations wont makethe cut), and believes that some o thehigh-impact/low-cost measures could beput in place beore the vacation seasonbegins.

    Relocating signs and getting residents

the pedestrian-riendly downtown areawhich Stormer envisions, encouragingpeople to walk Center Street and visitthe local business establishments. Butmajor changes to Center Street are whatStormer calls concrete and mortarissues: things like widening sidewalksand creating a median along CenterStreet are expensive and take time. I itscostly and permanent, we need to makesure its what we want beore we do it,said Stormer.

Councilman om Scruggs was opposedto accepting the proposal in its entirety.Teres a lot o good inormation hereand some interim things we can tackleright away, Scruggs said. But there arealso some much bigger projects that aregoing to be expensive, and we dont know

where were going to get the money. Letsbe smart about looking at them. Scruggssaid the important thing or residents toknow is that Councils acceptance o theplan is not the same thing as endorsingall the recommendations. Te importantthing is to move careully and cautiouslyto ensure the steps theyre recommendingis whats right or Folly Beach, saidScruggs.

Stormer emphasized that Council wasapproving a plan o what the Cityhoped to accomplish over the next ten

proposed trafc circles and having onlyone lane on and one lane o on CenterStreet.

Talking TrashTe Council then held a prolongeddiscussion about a proposed recyclingbin centered on whether to choose thelocation chosen by Councilman Ellis orthe one selected by Councilman imGoodwin. Ellis recommended placingthe bin at Berts. He said he had a letterrom the owners o Berts and the owner

o the adjacent property supportingthe location, and a petition with 60signatures supporting recycling at Berts.Goodwins choice was next to the watertower because it was City property that

would all under the watchul eye oCity employees, who would also help tokeep it clean, and it was across the streetrom an empty lot and didnt require anyletters.Te problem was that the resolutionhad been written in such a way that itrequired Council members to choosebetween the two locations. Tat was

when the talk got trashy. Goodwin madea motion that a vote on the ordinance bepostponed until Council could chooseone or the other locations because theCounty is not going to want us to puttwo bins out here Au contraire insisted

more than one bin on Folly so they couldcome out with an empty truck and ll itup. Councilwoman Laura Beck doubtedthat was true, citing that it had beendifcult or the Mayor to get the Countyto agree to even one bin, and thoughtCharleston County should decide whicho the available locations was best orthem. Councilman Charlie McCartythought the decision should be deerredto Follys Public Works Department.Wherever it goes, I suggest we puta memorial marker on it, McCarty

    quipped.

Eventually, Goodwin withdrew hisproposed site in order to get out o thisquagmire and made a motion that arecycling bin be placed at Berts. Teresolution passed unanimously.

Washington has health care reorm andFolly Beach has recycling bins, jokedEllis. Ellis also volunteered to pursuegetting an additional recycling bin onFolly and to try to get Charleston Countyto pick up recyclables once a week duringthe summer months.

Te next Folly Beach Council meeting willbe held at 7pm on February 23, 2010, atCity Hall, located at 21 Center Street. Formore ino, call City Hall at 588-2447.

What a dierence a ew weeks make.Te beginning o January was marked with exceptionally cold weather andtemperatures that oten dipped belowreezing. Concerns about the health oour sh stocks grew with each passing day. However, by the middle o the month, temperatures consistently reached the 60swith many brilliant, sunny days. Te shreally responded well to the improvedconditions and shing has been excellent.

Anglers continue to pursue the largeschools o redsh that have huddledtogether or the winter. Sunny days create

great sight shing opportunities, as theschools oten number in the hundreds.Stealth is very important when trying tocatch these sh that are already wary odolphins. When shing with articialplastic lures, weve been avoring lightercolors that are easily visible in the clearwinter waters. ry casting to the edges othe schools rst to avoid spooking them.Watching the mass o sh explode whenyou hook one is an amazing experience.

I you have ever considered learning to

fy sh, now is the time. Fly shing allowsanglers to make a delicate presentation, which is very important this time o year.Flies can be tied with both natural andarticial materials, mimicking baitshin a way that plastic lures simply cantmatch. As with the plastic lures, we arethrowing fies that have lighter colors. You should also try fies with tones o

not hook themselves (or the guide!) ontheir back cast. It takes time to learn thedynamics o the cast, but youll nd thathe eort hones your ocus. Youll spendmore time reading the water and learningto see sh, and your eort will be welworth it; especially when you are haulinin sh on days when other tactics juswont work.

Despite the season, youll be surprisedhow good the shing can be this time oyear. Most people have put up their geauntil spring, which means you have thwater to yoursel and there is little shing

pressure rom others. oss in the chance tocast into giant schools o redsh and youhave a recipe or a great day o shing.
