b i r d s o p r e y Te Red-tailed Hawk is one o the most widely
distributed hawks in the Americas, occupying
almost every type o open habitat on the continent,
including deserts, grasslands, coastal regions,
mountains, woodlands, tropical rainorests,
agricultural felds and urban areas. Tey can typically
be ound hunting rom an elevated perch site such as a
telephone pole, utility line, or, in this case, a neighbors
rootop at the Washout. Frequent prey include voles,
mice, rabbits, squirrels, pheasants, starlings and
blackbirds, as well as snakes and carrion. While the
Red-tailed Hawk is one o the largest birds youll see
in North America, the heaviest individuals weigh in at
only about three pounds.
A similar-sized dog might weight up to fve times
that much!b

WORK SESSION, 6 p.m.Lead-o and key discussion eatured
an update by Mayor Goodwin on
beach renourishment problems. Hisrecent trips included visits with S.C.Congressional delegation members andsta in Washington as well as with seniorDepartment o the Army and Corpso Engineers ocials. While billed asGuarded Optimism on the agenda, he
would reer to it as simply as a report onWhere We Are.
Te lobbying eort is aimed at gainingAdministration and Congressionalsupport or unding in the Fiscal Year2013 budget and appropriations orthe main renourishment eort (apartrom the $400K currently budgeted orthe engineering planning and permitprocessing) , and so ar the Mayor eelshe has gained the unanimous support o
our own S.C delegation. However, thebattle or Corps o Engineering undingor both the Port o Charleston dredgingas well as Folly Island renourishmentpromises to be highly competitive. Teeorts are aimed at creating a dedicatedpot o ederal unds or beachrenourishment (some $15 to $18 million)and insuring that the overall rules orcompetition are careully crated to allowFollys air claim to be in the top 10%o worthy contenders. O course, fnallygetting the votes or the appropriations
will be the acid test.In response to a question rom
councilmember Eddie Ellis, MayorGoodwin stated that the worst casescenario would be no unding orrenourishment in the upcomingappropriations. In that case, we
would need to fnd other sources ounding on our own and seek necessaryenvironmental permits as well. Tere are
really no legal avenues or the City tosue the Federal government or breacho contract. Te Mayor reminded allthat the current contract with the Corpso Engineers stipulates that all o itsprovisions depend on Congressionalappropriations being available. TeMayor indicated that the SC AttorneyGeneral has advised that the State wouldprobably not join the City in attempting
such a suit.Councilmember Dale Stuckey
asked i any alternative plan is beingdeveloped and councilmember PennellClamp thought it would be worthwhile
to seek support or other methods opreventing cyclical erosion that haveproven successul in other communitiesand countries. However, the Mayor eltsuch eorts needed to be deerred ornow, while we concentrate on the currentstrategy and worry about that as welook down the road at eight to ten yearrenourishment scenarios.
Amending OrdinancesIn other matters, CM Stuckey
presented two amending ordinances ordiscussion. Te frst dealt with Ordinance10-12, prohibiting certain buildingoperations on weekends, and the second,Ordinance 11-12 deals with conditionsrelating to surboards, skimboards,
personal watercrat and other watercrat.CM Stuckey had done signifcant
research on the legal issues surroundingor limiting Council authorities to
waive or grant variances to establishedordinances without specifcallyestablishing such authority in therespective ordinances themselves. Shealso discovered in the case o the Ord.11-12 that a previous amendment in

Dear Editor,
I live on Shadow Race Lane, whichhas become the subject o two ront pageCurrent articles - Over Barbered Arbor(Jan. 2011) and rouble on ShadowRace (April 2012). As I read the recentarticle, I wondered ... who has enoughtime on their hands to waste it by spyingand then reporting their neighbors tothe Mayor, the Fire Marshall, the police,
Aaron Pope, city ocials, all o citycouncil and DHEC?!? ......Whos next--Nikki?.
I simply dont understand whatswrong with 2 riendly guys (Ashton andCharles) who are gainully employed, paying taxes, and have the work ethic, initiative and know how to work on aboat in their spare time.
I like what theyve done to theiryard. Its artsy and edgy. Perector Folly. Cant appreciate it .thendont look at it. But its wrong to causedivisions and hostil ities over someonesconstitutional right o ree speech. Inominate 302 Shadow Race or Yard othe Month. Any seconds??
What I dont like is unelectedcommission members and ellow citizensusing their positions and power to
involve the government in a taxpayernanced Witch Hunt. Doesnt Folly havemore important problems such as beachre-nourishment, trac, and crime that
we should be working together to solverather than harassing 2 guys and a boat?!
I agree with Sam Robinson on 1 thing. No, not an HOA or Sunset Point butI would like to preserve the standardso Folly that I experienced when I
rst moved here. Respect or others, tolerance or diferences, a love o artisticexpression, and a love o nature. o thosethat like a bunch o restrictions and IOP,---move there. But let Folly remain a careree, un loving and unique community.

At Folly Beach Municipa l Court on
Friday, April 20, orgusen was granted acontinuance in his case.Local news outlets have covered the
case closely, with the Post and Courier'sinitial story ocusing on the Folly BeachPublic Saety Director Dennis Brown'sreluctance to release the police reportwhen they rst requested it (the reportwas released to the Folly Current withoutincident, and can be read in its entiretyhere).
Ricker's attorney, Tomas Rode, conrms that he is investigating thedisapperance o the video rom his client'sphone (Ricker is seen lming the incidentin the Youube clip), but claries that hehas not yet established a chain o custodyor the phone during and ater the arrest.

VIEW FROM THE EDGE
My alarm went of at 5:30 am onSaturday morning. I had to meet Danielat the boat landing at 6:30, so we couldbe gone shin. Daniel insisted on anearly start so we could get to the spothe had in mind beore some interloperhappened onto it. Tis is the rst timein a year Ive gone shing, and as it turnsout, the rst time Daniel has had his boatout this year. We scoot along the FollyRiver and drop anchor at a location Ivebeen sworn to secrecy about. I I toldyou Id have to kill you, and then Danielwould kill me.
Daniel Culpepper is a head-o-the-classmember o the Folly Beach Anglers club.He is the man to beat at any tournament, with the competition usual ly comingin as runner-up. In the Folly BeachAnglers Annual ournament he has wonthe last seven titles. Te rst three heshed rom the Folly Pier, the next tworom a boat he borrowed (Im not surethe owner knew he borrowed theirboat) and the most recent two rom aboat he owned. One year he won our outo ve categories, the th unrewardedbecause no shermen caught one in that
category.
Funny as it is, he laughs as we arebaiting our hooks, I had what wouldhave probably been a record in thatcategory, butit got away. He shakeshis head as only a sherman will do,reminiscing about the one that got
away. He brushes away the thoughtand expertly tosses his bait into a corner
between two oating docks. I toss mineclose to his, intent on not landing it onone o the docks, or worse, entangling us.I drop it pretty good, about three eet tothe let o his.
We are bottom-shing with reshshrimp. Tere is a nice shel here with a
big marsh drainage behind us. Te tideis incoming and keeping our lines taught. We each catch some small sh and tossthem back, laughing about catchingthem next year, at on our shrimp. Weare also laughing about shing on creditnding our hooks picked clean. Tereare probably some crabs involved.
Suddenly, Daniel hooks one that bendshim to the stern as he ghts to keep itrom shooting under one o the oating
docks. I grab the net. It is a big blackdrum and we have it dehooked and inthe cooler in seconds. Te black drumis 22.5 inches long. A ew minutes later,Daniel is inspecting the drums dung, which the sh had immediately depositedinto his cooler, and saying, Just wantto see what they are eating. I can onlysmile in appreciation, watching a truesherman at work. He is a scientist oshery, a master o nding and hookingthem.
We sh or a ew more hours. I caughtseveral small sh, that darned crabthat had been picking our hooks, and amature pufer sh. Daniel catches someo the same small sh and we enjoy a

Commercial composting in Charlestonjust got a lot easier with the launch o thenew compost collection company Food
Waste Disposal (FWD). Te result ohundreds o hours o research and with
the help o amily and riends, ormerSanctuary Director o EngineeringWayne Koeckeritz made his very rstcollection run in late February o thisyear and in three weeks had alreadydiverted more than 7,000 pounds ocompost rom the landll.
Its a new concept or restaurants, butits very simple and easy to explain, saidKoeckeritz.
Working with the new commercialcomposting center at the Beeserrylandll, Koeckeritz collects ood wasterom both commercial and residentialbins designated or composting up tothree times a week. For residents, itsvaluable in that commercial compostingallows products that dont easily compost
in residential composting piles tobiodegrade in the higher temperatureso a commercial site. For commercialbusinesses such as restaurants and hotels, the composting service not only ofersthem a way to be more eco-riendly andreduce their carbon ootprint, it alsohelps them cut down on the cost o theircurrent garbage services.
I dont tell businesses theyre savingmoney, rather they a re reducing theircounty user ee and lowering their trashhauling expenses, so the balance comesout pretty close to even, said Koeckeritz.
For example, every time a trashcollector picks up trash, the county sendsa user assessment ee per cubic yard. Fora our cubic yard garbage bin, a companymay be assessed around $700 per year.By composting, they can reduce theirgarbage bin size by hal or even more, and save that amount with their wastehauler.
Its the last thing people usually thinkabout when opening a restaurant, saidKoeckeritz. In act, up to 80 percent othe waste stream in restaurants could bediverted to composting, while another 15percent could be converted to recyclableproducts.
Whats more, many consumers dontknow that items listed as compostabledont compost unless placed in acommercial composting site.
For example, products likeplasticware, cups, bowls, and to-gocontainers that are listed as compostableonly compost in the higher heat ocommercial composting centers, saidKoeckeritz, noting that temperatures canget up to 160 degrees in commercial sites.
Tink about a good piece o stewmeat, said Koeckeritz. I you put it in a
crock pot at 160 degrees and leave it ora week, it will be unrecognizable thats
why commercial composting can takeand actually compost more products thana residential compost pile.
Commercial composting can takeall ruits, all vegetables, bread, dough, bakery items, pasta, grains, cofeegrounds and tea with lters, dairyproducts such as milk and cheese, processed oods, eggs, consumableliquids, cooked meats and sh, shells, bones, wooded skewers and cocktail
sticks, and even ood-soiled paperssuch as paper bags, paper towels, papernapkins and waxed cardboard boxes.
Because you can basically composteverything letover on a diners plate, including the napkin, its makingrestaurants reconsider how they handletheir ood waste, said Koeckeritz.
Koeckeritz currently serves severalbusinesses, including Te Sanctuary,Sunrise Bistro, -Bonz in West Ashley, and aco Boy in downtown Charleston,as well as a small homeowners associationon James Island. And with a truckhauling capacity o 15 tons, Koeckeritzhas room to grow.
At the end o the day, Im a garbageman a green garbage man, smiledKoeckeritz, but hes really more thanthat. By making it easier or localbusinesses and residents to composttheir ood waste, hes already makinga signicant dent on what it throwninto our county landll. Hes evenparticipating in area estivals, collectingthe compostable waste rom the SEWE
Festival, the Cajun Festival, and theupcoming Dirt Fair on Johns Island.Restaurants have had to change how
they serve products, but its changesthat most o them want to make, saidKoeckeritz.
We have to scrape plates anyway,so its not hard to keep up with and itsdenitely not an inconvenience, said
Jessica Welenteichick, owner o SunriseBistro on Johns Island. Weve oundthat theres a lot more thats compostablethan we knew beore we started, and
were getting accustomed to it though Isometimes have to remind the che whenthings can be composted, she smiled.
As part o the move toward business-wide composting, Welenteichick is
switching out her plastic cofee stirrerswith wooden ones, and replacing herketchup packets with a pump or in-house diners.
Were still getting through the lasto our plastics and moving to paper, but well soon have a lot le ss trash, said
Welenteichick. For more information about Food Waste
Disposal (FWD), visit www.wastefwd.com,call 991-2791, or email wayne@wastefwd.

No Mold is Good MoldAt least when it comes to your home
BY MARY GACH
In 2003, my husband and I moved
to Charleston rom Atlanta with ourtwo-year-old daughter and inant son.We moved into a rental house or a yearwhile we constructed our uture home.
Te rental house was a ground levelranch on Sullivan's Island. It seemedto have survived Hurricane Hugounscathed, and it appeared clean and saeon the surace.
Beore our move, the amily had beenexceptionally healthy. All o that changedater our move. My children and I wereconstantly aggravated by colds, sinusinections, and atigue. My husband is apilot and travels hal the month; he aredbetter.
With a suspicion that the rental housewas somehow causing our i ll health, Iocused a lot o time toward building ahealthy home. I read several books andI badgered our builder to make sure ouruture home would be as sae as possible. When we moved into our new home, there was a degree o relie. While mychildren's health improved, I continuedto head downhill. It would be our moreyears beore I discovered the source o
my trouble.
As it turns out, our renta l househad been contaminated with atoxic mold called Stachybotrys. Despitethe time and eort I put toward buildinga healthy and mold-resistant house, I hadnot thought at all about the urniture. As it turns out, when we moved our
mattress rom the mold-inested rentalhouse into our new house, we carriedthe Stachybotrys mold right along withus. For the next our years, my exposureto the mold continued, and my healthdeteriorated.
A riend suggested I go see Dr. AllanLieberman in North Charleston. We
are ortunate in the Lowcountry to haveone o the best environmental doctorsin the country. Trough his Centeror Occupational and EnvironmentalMedicine (COEM), Dr. Lieberman'sofce thoroughly looks or causes or

varied health symptoms.
At the COEM, I was given ourtest plates to check or mold in ournew house. Ater a short incubationperiod, I checked each plate to see theresults. While three plates showed nosign o mold, the one I had placed onmy bed was thriving with new spores.
I hired a mold inspector to determinethe types o mold present and to help usdecontaminate the room.
In Dr. Liebermans paper "Explosiono Mold Cases in Homes, Workplaces, and Occupational Medicine Practice," heexamined symptoms in 48 patients whowere heavily exposed to mold. Te resultswere as ollows:
(1) Muscle and joint pain (71%)(2) Fatigue and weakness (70%)(3) Neurocognitive dysunction (67%)(4) Sinusitis (65%)(5) Headache (65%)(6) Gastrointestinal problems (58%)(7) Shortness o breath (54%)
(8) Anxiety/depression/irritability(54%)
(9) Chest tightness (42%)(10) Insomnia (40%)(11) Dizziness (38%)(12) Numbness/tingling (35%)(13) La ryngitis (35%)(14) remors (25%)(15) Heart palpitations (21%)
I had nearly all o these symptoms
along with night sweats and itchy earcanals. My symptoms improved witha new mattress and reduced exposure. However, I have learned that there isa road to recovery that begins withreducing exposure.
My own quest led me to openDwellSmart as a source or sae andhealthy products or homes, schools, and businesses. Trough DwellSmart,
I have met many people also impactedby mold. For some, the mold has been intheir home, oten hiding in the HVACsystem or seeping in through leaky airducts. Others are exposed in their workenvironment and are acing a dicultdecision between their health andemployment. Parents are concerned abouttheir children who come home romschool each day with a headache andrunny nose.
Not everyone is impacted by mold inthe same way. Our susceptibilityto mold illness is based on our geneticsand immune system.
o control and reduce mold in yourhome, be sure to quickly correct anymoisture problems and clean up anymold that may be present. Mold growsin a humid environment ( greater than70 percent relative humidity). Keep yourhousehold humidity below that levelusing an air conditioner or dehumidier.Ideally, the relative humidity should bebetween 30 and 50 percent.
Tis allows or micro-climates which
are prone to humidity fuctuations. Forexample, on a cold night the relativehumidity between a window pane and aninterior shutter or curtain might be muchhigher. Water may even condense on thewindow. Areas prone to condensationshould be amended in some way (e.g. youmight not close a window blind all theway so that ai r can more easily circulateto help even out humidity with the resto the room). Pipes should be insulated
so that water does not condense on coldpipes. Likewise, air conditioning ductsshould be well insulated to avoid suracecondensation and mold problems.
Fix any leaky plumbing or othersources o water. Absorbent materialssuch as carpet or mattresses may need tobe replaced i they become moldy. Keeproo gutters clean, and be sure that theground slopes away rom your homesoundation and that water does not poolin any roo or ground areas.
Vent dryers and stoves to the outsidewhere possible, and use bathroom exhaustans when showering.
A mold problem can usually be seenor smelled, but not always. Surprisingly,I could not smell the particular moldthat was making me sick so you cannotalways trust your sense o smell. Moldmay be hidden behind wallpaper or undercarpeting so consider removing these imold is a concern. Closets (particularly inot serviced by an HVAC vent) may beprone to mold (louvered doors will helpto circulate the air).
Mold is everywhere, and we cannotavoid it completely. And, not everyone issusceptible to mold illness. But trust yourinstincts and seek help (books, doctors, experts) i you believe mold is negativelyimpacting you or someone you love. b

begin with they tore out walls and got rido ratty rugs and urniture.
Wed hire contractors and plumberswho would work one day and never comeback. So wed have to do it ourselves.
Ater the rst bill came rom the tile guy,we decided that we had to learn to do tilework. Working in sections, sometimesaround guests who had been coming oryears, the inn was reborn as a 7,200 squareoot gem that can accommodate up to 32guests.
One previous owner, local dentist SteveMichel, was amazed. Each room isuniquely and tasteully decorated withhandmade quilts, claw oot bathtubs, andantiques. A well stocked catering kitchenand an assortment o sitting rooms and
porches provide space to spread out.Outside there are lawn games and
sculptures. Downstairs, Joni discovereda basement that looked like theyd beenhaving sances down there. Now itsa local gathering spot where ne wine, cheeses, and chocolate are served arounda replace. Recently she also opened thetowns only wine shop on Main Street.
Te inn caters not only to vacationersbut is ideal or amily reunions andretreats. Te best deal is to rent the wholeplace with all 18 bedrooms or a week
which comes out to about $150 per roomor the entire week. Nightly rates are alsoofered.
