Sharing our faith... Arturo & Anabel and Family

Since when have you been a parishioner here at St. Mary’s? We have been parishioners since 1992 Why do you love your Catholic Faith? Thanks to God, both of us were born into Catholic families and through God we have experienced true love. We met at Saint Mary's and we found our vocation which was matrimony. We have had the privilege to deliver the Holy Commun-ion to sick parishioners, our children were altar servers for many years, and we are members of the Neocatechumenal Way. We have discovered that serving the Lord has strengthened our faith

What words of encouragement will you give to St. Mary’s parishioners during this time? To have faith in God and the Virgin Mary because they will never abandon us. This time is a test to our faith. We must obey our pastor by following the safety regulations. With the help of God we will strive forward.

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

In our Gospel passage, from Matthew, Jesus poses a question to the disci-ples: “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they offer vary-ing responses. Then, Jesus gets personal with them. “But who do you say that I am?” Peter gets the answer right: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus is getting personal with us today. He poses the same question to each of us who call ourselves His stewards and modern-day disciples. But do our lives truly reflect this? If we really believe that Christ is the Son of God, sent to save us from our sins and lead us to Heaven, then we must say so, not just with words but with our actions. Do my am-bitions and priorities in life say that Christ is my Savior and I am His disciple? Does my budget, my family life, my entertainment say so? The gifts and blessings God has given us — our time, our talents, our material posses-sions — are meant to be used in a manner that says "Christ is my Savior and I am His disciple." The most eloquent praise we can offer Him is a life lived in grateful response to His unfathomable love. This is the beauty and power of a stewardship way of life.

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time Whenever the scriptures are read at Mass our Lord Jesus speaks, as the Second Vatican Council de-clared: “He [Christ] is present in His word, since it is He Himself who speaks when the holy scriptures are read in the Church” (Sacrosanctum Concilium 7). Jesus’s question to Peter and the disciples—“But who do you say that I am?”—is not a lifeless word that remains in the past. Our Lord is Risen, and He now puts the question to us: “But who do you say that I am?”

Back then, simply by using the word ‘but,’ Jesus drew a line between His disciples and everyone else. The others believed something about Jesus—He was a prophet—but the disciples’ answer was different. The others looked at Jesus from a purely human knowledge. But Peter, aided by divine knowledge, a gift of faith, answered from a supernatural place: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” This is an answer that “flesh and blood [had] not revealed…but [Jesus’s] heavenly Father.”

We too are asked this question. The dia-logue back then teaches something about our dialogue with Jesus now. Peter’s answer came from God. What other people answered came from man, and it was not an answer that could change their lives; those who only thought Je-sus was a prophet were not His followers. Their answer did not correspond to the objective real-ity of Who Jesus is. He is the Son of God. This truth, however, cannot simply be professed with our lips. Jesus asks of us a living faith, one in which our belief transforms our life. He wants us to believe that He is the Son of God so deeply that the belief reaches down to our core and causes us to toss our life into His hands. So while there is a right answer to the question of who Jesus is, the question “But Who do you say that I am?” does not have a right answer in the same way. It instead stretch-es to our interior life and sets up a measure and judgment of our heart: Jesus is in truth God; do I profess that, in word and action? How does my subjective belief about Jesus measure up to the reality of Who He is? Our answer is known to us and God. But recall that Peter’s answer did not come from “flesh and blood”—it was not something he thought up for himself by the exercise of his intellect. His answer came from the Father as a gift, and so that answer must come to us in the same way. Whatever our answer to Jesus’s ques-tion is now, it does not have to remain so. We can ask our Father in heaven for the same gift He gave to Peter. And He so wants us to receive this gift, for those who receive it become saints. What else was St. John Paul II than a man who believed that Jesus is God and acted upon it? What else was Mother Teresa than a woman who believed down to her core that Jesus is Lord? These are but two saints who show us what can hap-pen to us and the world when we assent to the truth of Jesus’s identity.

Jesus asks us today, “But who do you say that I am?” The answers of St. John Paul II and St. Teresa of Calcutta had tremendous effects on many lives. Our answer will have consequences too, for both our own eter-nal salvation and the world’s.

Compartiendo nuestra fe… Rafael y Maria Pilar Sandoval

Tenemos 23 años asistiendo a Santa María.

21o DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO
