FOURTH COURSE POLICY The annual tuition at Union allows a student to register for three terms taking three courses per term. This allows students to

complete the required 36 courses for graduation. In some engineering programs as many as 40 courses may be required and those

students are permitted to enroll in 10 courses per year. Under certain circumstances students may be allowed to take a fourth

course in a term.

Students who are making satisfactory progress in their program of study are allowed to enroll in one fourth course during an

academic year at no extra charge, provided they have a GPA of at least 3.3. These courses can be used to enhance the student’s

academic experience at Union. All such courses will appear on the transcript and can be used to fulfill program requirements;

however, they cannot be used for the purpose of accelerated graduation. (This includes fourth courses taken on a Term

Abroad.)

Fourth courses can also be used to make up a deficiency in credits due to withdrawals or failure. A 4th course fee will be charged

under these circumstances. Students whose GPA is below 2.5 will need a signature from Dean Wunderlich before signing up for a

fourth course.

ALL students, INCLUDING ENGINEERING STUDENTS, with the exception of Leadership in Medicine (LIM) and

Scholar Students, will be required to fill out the “Petition to Enroll in a Fourth Course” form. Forms are available on the web at

https://www.union.edu/offices/registrar/forms/ Select Fourth Course and you will be brought to a Google doc that you must

fill out after first signing in with your google email user name and password. After you fill out the form and hit SUBMIT, you will

receive an email with an attached PDF fourth course form, which you must print, sign and bring in to the Registrar's

Office. Fourth courses cannot be registered online.

CROSS REGISTRATION

The purpose of the cross registration program is to provide students the opportunity to study areas not represented by the offerings

of their home college, at no additional tuition charge. In addition to general guidelines, each college has its own set of regulations,

regarding cross-registration and students should make themselves aware of these for both their home campus and the campus they

are visiting.

Cross Registration has been a service of the Member Institutions of the Hudson Mohawk Association since 1970, when the

Association was chartered by the New York State Board of Regents. All full time matriculated students at Union are eligible to

cross register in courses during the academic year offered at:

DESCRIPTION OF COURSES NOT IN THE 2016-17 ACADEMIC CATALOG *Includes Revised Course Descriptions*

AAH-204 Chinese Architecture. Lullo, S. This course is designed as an introduction to the philosophical principles, symbolism

and design of traditional Chinese buildings and cities. China’s traditional architecture and city plans are considered from various

perspectives, including archaeological evidence, primary texts on architecture, and painting. We begin by exploring palace

complexes of the early dynastic periods, which served as a design model for religious centers in the Confucian, Buddhist and

Daoist traditions. The relationship between buildings and nature/landscape is a running theme throughout this course, which will

conclude with discussions of traditional and contemporary village centers and geomantic principles of fengshui. Students will be

expected to analyze the visual organization of city centers as well as the buildings that occupy those spaces, considering function

with reference to philosophic and religious principles.

ADA-041 The Moving Body Practicum. Moutillet, M., Crawley, L. class will focus on the study of a fusion of dance styles to

provide a welcoming class to our dancers or non-dancers at Union College. Taught to music, this technique dance class will

include some contemporary dance vocabulary, a study of muscular elongation of the body and the development of one’s physical

potential. Special emphasis will be given to proper warm up, awareness of body isolation and placement in order to enhance

endurance and flexibility. Open to all interested in learning and experiencing the fundamentals of the dance discipline.

ADA-160 Dance for the Camera. Moutillet, M. This course focuses on the process of making dances for the camera, uniting the

various aesthetics of movement and the practical elements of recording visual material. Since the arrival of the digital chip, the

light camera, and various computer programs, we have seen a revolution in dances created for the screen, Slideroom, YouTube or

Vimeos. Methods will focus on conceptualized movement, phrase development, compositional tools and framing, as well as

design production. Through discussions, decision-making, individual and collaborative work, the designated

choreographer/director, crew and cameraperson will develop a sense of craft used in the art of making dances for video viewing.

The student challenge will be to invent a unique dance language to communicate ideas, intentions and feelings through the

medium of video making. Dance moves – with their complexity, richness, rhythmical and compelling imagery - will be at the core

of their creative work. CC: HUM

BIO-064 Biodiversity. Rice, S. Habitat degradation, global change and biodiversity loss threaten natural ecosystems. This course

examines our scientific understanding of ecology, genetics and evolution to investigate how these areas of study are applied to

develop management strategies to mitigate environmental threats. We will draw upon historical and modern examples from the

Albany Pine Bush, Adirondacks, National Parks and endangered species. In addition, students will learn to construct and apply

simulation models to evaluate conservation strategies and appreciate the dynamic nature of science as it relates to the development

and application of scientific knowledge in conservation. CC: SCLB

BIO-341 Human Physiology. Fleishman L. We will examine and quantitatively analyze the function of major physiological

systems in the human body. This analysis will include study of blood and circulation, respiration and gas exchange, water and salt

balance, temperature regulation, muscle function, nervous and sensory systems, immune function, endocrine systems, digestion

and energetics. We will cover both normal function and changes that occur during disease states and other stresses. A major

focus will be on control mechanisms and feedback. There is no laboratory with the course, but we will utilize computer

simulations to explore dynamic interactions among system components. Counts towards the Biology major. Prerequisite: BIO-112

ECO-229 Introduction to Behavioral Economics. Raeburn, K. Human behavior often departs from standard economic

reasoning in predictable ways. This course is an introduction to the field of behavioral economics - the endeavor to enrich standard

economic theory by incorporating psychological insights into human behavior. In this course you will study how behavioral

economists explain a range of psychological and social phenomena and how those explanations differ from standard economic

ones. In particular, you will study the various ways in which (apparent) irrationality influences people’s judgement and decision-

making. Behavioral economics is invaluable to anyone with an interest in human behavior. It is particularly relevant to those with

an interest in economics, management, marketing, public policy and the psychology of judgement and decision-making.

Prerequisite: ECO-101. Not open to junior or senior Economics majors.

EGL-304 Queer Theory. Mitchell, J. The word “queer” is a complicated term with a long, often fraught history. For the most

part, it has been more recently adopted to invoke genders and sexualities that lie outside traditional, "normative" constellations,

though critics of the term often focus on its problematic all-encompassing use as a synonym for gay and lesbian, its popular co-

optability, and its potential prioritization of one facet of identity at the expense of others. This seminar will

interrogate queer theory and queer studies as fields of interdisciplinarity. We will pay particular attention to questions of desire,

identity, citizenship, bodies, pleasure, and the construction of gender and sex. We will also examine the relationships between

queerness and race, class, material conditions, age, able-bodiedness, and community formation. Throughout our term we will

likely be reading theoretical and historical works by Michel Foucault, Eve Sedgwick, Michael Warner, Sarah Ahmed, Judith

Butler, Jose Muñoz, Audre Lorde, Susan Stryker, Roderick Ferguson, Jack Halberstam; in addition, we’ll be looking at relevant

literature, film, television, and popular culture.

ENS-210/GEO-210 Groundwater Hydrology. Stahl, M. Groundwater accounts for 97% of the available freshwater on earth and

is a vital source of water for household, industrial, and agricultural uses worldwide. The well-being and prosperity of human

civilization requires the sound stewardship and sustainable use of our groundwater supplies. Groundwater hydrology is a highly

interdisciplinary field that brings together the geologic and environmental sciences with engineering. This course will begin by

exploring the physical properties of groundwater and the geologic media through which it flows, the physical laws that govern

groundwater flow and transport, and techniques for modeling groundwater flow patterns. The mid-part of the course will focus on

the engineering aspects of groundwater, covering topics such as the hydraulics of pumping wells, the transport of contaminants

within aquifers, the remediation of contaminated aquifers, and well-drilling technology. Later we will cover the role groundwater

plays in geologic processes and the role of geology in determining groundwater chemistry and quality. We will also discuss the

connections between groundwater and human health and the importance of groundwater in the global food supply. Prerequisites:

ENS-100 or any geology course numbered 110 or higher; weekly lab

GER-404 Kafka and Mann: German Modernism. Ricci-Bell, M. Referred to by some as “similar opposites”, Franz Kafka and

Thomas Mann represent the poles of modernism in European literature as perhaps no two authors do. Contemporaries for a time,

the pair read each other’s works, and – as quite different in style as their writings were -- expressed great mutual

admiration. Since their deaths, literary theorists, including the preeminent Hungarian Georg Lukács, have sought to understand

European literary trends precisely through the comparison of Kafka and Mann. This course will examine selected works by the

German-speaking Jewish author from Prague, Franz Kafka, noted for his understated wit and his gripping, often bizarre,

nightmarish, portrayals of the human condition, alongside works by the German, Nobel Prize-winning author Thomas Mann,

known for his intricate, at times deliberately overstated depictions of intellectual and artistic genius. Together, the two authors

explored themes of sexuality, psychology, aesthetics, moral decadence, societal marginalization and death, drawing from

references to visual arts and music. We will also examine selecting cinematic renderings of these authors’ works and lives. Taught

in German with readings in German. Prerequisite: Ger-300-level course or instructor permission.

HST-259 People’s History Middle East. Miller, O. This class is premised on getting beyond the media representations of the

Middle East by examining histories of subaltern communities. This course will focus on the social lives of workers, slaves,

nomads, migrants, refugees, and peasants during the 19th and 20th centuries.

MER-352 Computer Aided Designs. Tchako, A. The purpose of this course is to provide the student with the advanced skills to

utilize the CAD software to effectively generate parametric solids modeling of complex three-dimensional models, working

drawings and assemblies of parts. Additionally, the student will be introduced to finite Element Analysis (FEA) features of the

CAD software. The focus of the course is on the design methodology and the use of computer aided design (CAD) for mechanical

engineering design processes and analyses. The FEA simulation tools will give students ability to apply and analyze parts and

Page 7: FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK AND TWITTER · PDF fileAdditional course descriptions may be found within this document ... SRS will not be ... The purpose of the cross registration program

assemblies to include topics such as stress analysis, thermal analysis and vibration analysis of solid bodies. Prereq: MER 101,

MER 213, MER214, Coreq.: MATH 130

MTH-248 Intermediate Topics in Math. Zwicker, Khatami, Jauregui. An exploration into topics chosen from different areas of

pure mathematics, this course is divided into three sequential units, each taught by a different instructor. The topics are 1) convex

geometry (including convex sets, linear and affine spans, simplices, and applications to the mathematics of voting); 2) ordered sets

(including posets, order-preserving maps, chains, Zorn's lemma, and Dilworth's theorem); 3) introduction to analysis (convergence

of sequences and series of real and complex numbers, radius of convergence of Taylor series, Euler's formula). Students will

receive a single grade for the entire course. Not normally open to students who have completed MTH-257 or two or more MTH

courses at the 300-level.

PSC-229 Comics, Culture and Politics. Plencer, J. This course will challenge students to carefully consider and substantively

analyze comics—from early single panel cartoons to mass culture comic books, alternative comix, and long-form graphic

novels—as sites of critical political discourse. In other words, students will engage with and ultimately participate in developing

the political theory of comics—a promisingly vibrant if still nascent field. We will have two focal points guiding our study:

understanding the historical relationship between context and material production of comics art, and interpreting the ongoing

salience of comics as cultural artifacts that shape how we conceive classic political questions of law, power, and justice. A

primary goal of the course is to situate comics, as well as our interpretations of their politics, within a broader narrative of political

culture—mostly in the United States, but with short excursions abroad as well. Because of this, this course will utilize comics as

evidence of political argument and theorization, or as primary documents from which we can develop critical understandings of

politics and change through time.

PSC-349 Seminar: Comparative Politics. Angrist, M. The State in Africa: Democracy, Development, and Security. Sub-Saharan

Africa is the focus of considerable international scrutiny and concern. From lagging economic growth across much of the

continent, to famine in Somalia, to civil wars in South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to Boko Haram’s terror

attacks in Nigeria, to the suspected use by the al-Qaeda affiliate AQIM of Sahara desert territory as a staging ground – instability

and a sense of threat tend to crowd the headlines. This course takes you deep beyond the headlines as it poses the following

questions: What is the “state of the state” in Sub-Saharan Africa? How well have state institutions provided order, security, good

governance, economic prosperity, and social services to citizens? Why have some states done (much) better than others in this

regard? How have colonial legacies, climate, poverty, ethnic and religious divides, oil and mineral wealth, and other factors

impacted the quality of state institutions and the provision of good governance? How do the policies of key external actors –

primarily the U.S. and China – shape state institutions? What are the consequences of (varying) state quality for regular people?

Can states be strengthened? Should they be?

REL-204 Religion & Neuroscience. Wegter-McNelly. This course considers the significance of recent advances in the neuro-

and cognitive sciences for religious belief and behavior. In recent decades scientists have made significant progress toward better

understanding how the human brain works. These advances often appear to threaten, but in some cases deepen, various traditional

religious views of the human person. If our sense of self is reducible to neuronal activity, what does this imply about human

agency and freedom? These advances also challenge longstanding religious beliefs about the nature of transcendence and the

accessibility of the divine to human perception. Is belief in God a byproduct of evolution? Can religious experiences be

manufactured on demand with the right chemicals? And if so, what does all this imply about the past, present, and future of

religion as a part of human culture? After a brief introduction to the scientific study of the human brain and nervous system, the

first half of the course considers various aspects of the human person treated in traditional religious accounts: personal identity,

body, mind, will, and soul. The second half of the course considers three topics related to the question of transcendence: 1) human

perceptions of transcendence, 2) human beliefs about transcendence, and 3) human engagement with transcendence. The course

ends with a consideration of the significance and viability of religion in a neuroscientific world.

REL-235 The Heavens: Ancient/Modern. Wegter-McNelly, Plofker, K. This course explores the changing significance and

cross-cultural impacts of ideas about celestial objects and the patterns of their movements. These ideas circulated from ancient

Mesopotamia, the Classical world, India and China through the medical Eurasian world and the increasingly globalized culture of

the early modern period to the present day. Some of the key themes will be:

*the heavens and the divine: celestial events as reflections of sacred realities

*the discovery of periodic phenomena, quantitative modeling, and the birth of scientific cosmology

Page 8: FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK AND TWITTER · PDF fileAdditional course descriptions may be found within this document ... SRS will not be ... The purpose of the cross registration program

*celestial divination and astrology: their emergence and importance, and their eventual transition out of the framework of

"science"

*gravitational-wave astronomy: a new window onto the heavens

*interaction of discourses of "science", "philosophy" and "religion": Rivalry, instrumentation, evidence, illusion, consilience?

Class is open to students in all fields without prerequisites. It will draw on fundamental high-school mathematics (briefly

reviewing material as necessary), and will introduce basic concepts of spherical astronomy as well as non-technical exploration of

ideas in modern physics.

SOC-221 School Social Work. Frandino, D. This course focuses on the optimal use of Social Work in the public school setting as

well as the role of the school in delivering human services. Public education has long been considered the great equalizer in

American society. This course will analyze the fundamental mission of both Social Work and the schools to provide equal access

and opportunity for our youngest generation.

Changing demands on our schools’ educational and social missions will be assessed. An ecological framework will be utilized to

present the child at the center of the intersection of the educational system, family system ,and the community

system. Specialized knowledge areas will include interprofessional teamwork, social skill building strategies, poverty’s impact on

school achievement, pupil rights and responsibilities, compulsory attendance, special education services, and zero

tolerance. Prerequisite: SOC-100

SPN-308 Spanish Youth Culture. Henseler, C. The Spanish Movida was an explosive artistic youth cultural movement that

emerged during the Spanish transition to democracy in the 1970’s and ‘80s. Although short-lived, it left a lasting mark on Spanish

cultural history because Spanish youth used music, art, photography, fashion, film, fanzines, comics, sculpture, architecture, and

design to challenge social norms, question assumptions, open new spaces, and give expression to their vision of a new democratic

Spain. How and why did the vibrant Movida come about? Who were the major contributors to this cultural explosion? And what

was their lasting legacy? Through the step-by-step development of a research project and student-centered conversations and

workshops, this course engages with the prolific multi-disciplinary expressions of individual artists and visionaries of the Movida.

Prerequisite: SPN-203 or permission of instructor.
