CROSS-REGISTRATION POLICY

The purpose of the cross registration program is to provide students the opportunity to study areas not represented by the offerings

of their home college, at no additional tuition charge. In addition to general guidelines, each college has its own set of regulations,

regarding cross-registration and students should make themselves aware of these for both their home campus and the campus they

are visiting.

DESCRIPTION OF COURSES NOT IN THE 2018-19 ACADEMIC REGISTER *Includes Revised Course Descriptions*

CSC-483: Computer Vision. Rieffel, J. This class is about learning and applying the algorithms that give computers

and robots the ability to understand and interact with the real world through physical imaging sensors. This portfolio-

based seminar course will examine the state of the art in computer vision through readings of textbooks and original

papers, and provide hands-on practice through the implementation of selected algorithms. Prerequisite: CSC 151.

ECO-239: Economics of Development. Giri, J. The issues in development economics deal with the causes that limit

the ability of a nation or an individual to have proper education, health, employment, income and a desired standard of

living. The causes may be economic, social, political and institutional in nature. In this course we will explore these

causes and find possible policies that can be implemented to address the problems. Each topic will be supplemented by

a case study of a country from either Africa, South Asia, South Asia or Latin America. We will use statistical data and

graphs in MS-EXCEL to make comparative analysis between countries. Prerequisites: ECO-101

EGL-304-Junior Seminar: Don DeLillo and the American Postmodern. Kuhn, B. This course explores the novels

of Don DeLillo, one of the more influential and prophetic American writers of the contemporary, post-modern, late-

capitalist era. We will consider themes that run throughout his works and typify the American condition such as

rampant consumerism, violence, the disintegration of the nuclear family, global terrorism, a pervasive sense of

environmental disaster, the saturation of mass media, globalization and multi-national cyber-capitalism. What is the

role of the novelist in this post-modern landscape dominated by the Internet, television, and film? We will begin with

his novels from the 1980’s, including the thriller The Names and his breakout work, White Noise. We will conclude

with his latest novel, the futuristic Zero K about a billionaire who seeks immortality through cryogenics. The goals of

the course are to read the works of DeLillo, familiarize yourself with the community of thinkers (philosophers, literary

critics, cultural critics) who have engaged with DeLillo’s works, and to contribute to the critical conversation on

DeLillo through daily class discussions, presentations, and a research paper.

ISC-218: Encountering Spirituality through Storytelling Practices: Discussions on Faith, Peace, Love, and

Understanding. Nelson, E. Conceived as an academic introduction and experiential immersion into the emerging

field of Spirituality and Mind/Body studies, this one-time Minerva Course offers students the opportunity to

critically examine modern spirituality in America as both practice and product, explore and experience a variety

of spiritual and mind/body approaches commonly practiced in mainstream society, and reflect on their

experiences by through critical and personal reflective writing practices. Through the lens of shared stories and

storytelling practices, students will engage in contemplative, reflective, and conversational practices from both an

objective and subjective position. Given that many of these modern-day spiritual approaches are complex, often

intermingling aspects of the world’s great religions with modern therapeutic psychology, self-help, and personal

politics of movements for social change, the study of spirituality and mind/body approaches forces us to confront

many of the central concerns of modern American life: the role of religion in one’s life and in society;

psychology, self-help, and therapeutic culture; personal and socially-accepted beliefs about life/death,

sickness/health, able-ism/disability, and personal well-being; global religious and cultural encounters; gender,

class, race, and sexuality; and consumerism and mass culture—all of which offer rich and diverse materials for

class discussion and our collective and individual search for a greater understanding of the self.

LAS-101: Introduction to Latin American and Caribbean Studies. Seri, G. This course introduces students to

Latin American & Caribbean Studies through a reflexive multidisciplinary approach using such fields as

anthropology, arts, economics, literature, music, philosophy, political science, visual history, and other disciplines

and cultural products. The course explores Latin America and the Caribbean from pre-Columbian times to the

present in order to understand the nature of enduring cultural forms and institutions, their adaptations through

time and contact, and the sensibilities and imaginaries woven into and out of them through memory, traditions,

and the writing and living of history itself.

MER-216: Finite Element Analysis. Ramasubramanian, A. This course starts with an introduction to the

mathematical underpinnings of Finite Element Analysis (FEA). We will illustrate how to use FEA to solve basic

problems in mechanics and instruct on the proper use of FEA and avoid common pitfalls. We will explain how to

apply FEA techniques to solve 2D and 3D problems for which analytical solutions are not known. Prerequisites: MER-

214 or BME-311

PSC-231: Theories of Peace and War. Seri, G. Do aggression and violence arise from individuals or groups, from

nations, global forces, or from entire civilizations? Is warfare an eliminable pathology or just part of the human

condition? Any answer to these questions ultimately involves ontological claims on how things are, key in shaping the

ways in which we imagine and inhabit our world. This course revisits arguments on peace, war, and violence central in

the tradition of Western political thought. By exploring works of classical, modern, and contemporary political

thinkers, contextualized in reference to key cases, we will identify and critically assess contentious explanations and

philosophical justifications of peace and war.

PSC-250: Politics of Resistance. Staff. Nation-state systems often create ingroups and outgroups along other power

relations of class, race, and gender. As a result, movements of resistance emerge. These movements may be legal or

illegal, pacifist or armed, popular or isolated, but in all cases, they point to consistent contradictions within the system

of nation-states. In this course, we will explore various ongoing resistance movements from different political and

geographic contexts. Our case studies will include Maoist, anarchist, feminist, and indigenous movements from Asia,

Africa, and the Americas. Through our discussions of these movements, we will analyze and compare their

philosophies, politics, and strategies. In most cases, the states these movements oppose have either banned them or

sought to squash them through force. Because of this, there are few balanced sources about these movements, and we

will thus also explore how power and knowledge production are used to sideline opposition forces. Prerequisites: PSC-

111 or 112 or 113 or SO Standing

PSC-359: IR Seminar: Refugees. Lobe, T. Currently around 65 million people across the globe are displaced by war,

violence and environmental destruction. This worldwide refugee crisis of forced migration is the largest displacement

of people since World War II. Seventy years ago various humanitarian institutions and legal conventions were first set

up to deal with the refugee crisis. Moreover, many NGO's across border originated in order to help rescue and resettle

refugees. Today that global regime is breaking apart as many nation-states are closing their borders to more refugees,

and the opportunities for those fleeing war and persecution, including internally displaced persons, has constricted

dramatically, leaving refugees in increasing unsafe and desperate circumstances. Prerequisites: PSC-111 or 112 or 113

and SO Standing. WAC

PSY-261: Psychology of Women & Gender. Walker, D.C. This course will introduce students to the psychology of

gender. We will examine both how psychologists study gender and how psychology itself can be a gendered field.

Time will be spent addressing relevant research methods, theories, and applications. During this course, students will

learn about the different research methods, clinical techniques, and applications used by psychologists that are relevant

to the psychology of gender. Students will be exposed to primary source readings in the field and personal accounts.

Students will engage with this material via active class discussions and diverse assignments. Prerequisite: PSY 100

REL-180: Science, Religion, and Democracy. Bedford, P. This is an introductory course that will tackle some of the

big questions about the relationship between science and religion, and the history of the relationship between these

dimensions of life, culture, and politics. Key questions to be addressed will include: How should we understand the

supposed conflict between science and religion? How should conflicts between citizens with science-based and

religion-based beliefs be handled in modern liberal democracies? Are religion-based beliefs as suitable for discussion

within the public sphere as science-based beliefs? Are there still important conflicts between science and religion, e.g.,

Darwinian evolution versus creationism or intelligent design? How have philosophy and recent theology been engaged

with such conflicts, and how should they be engaged now? What are the political ramifications?
