Welcome to the Autumn season at QuarterhouseWe have met some extraordinary people in 2015. People who are using their time and talents to enact change in the world, here in Folkestone and beyond. Throughout the festivals I have been inspired by how much can be accomplished by one person: from personal triumphs over adversity to national campaigns for change. And how much can be accomplished when that person shares their story with others. Whether through a talk, a poetry performance, a voice workshop, theatre or comedy, these people have helped us pay attention, giving us new ways to see and understand issues that matter.

I hope that you will find time to come along to one of our open meetings where you become part of the conversation about what happens at Quarterhouse. So far this year over 90 people from Kent have been involved in making the festivals happen. From giving talks and workshops to mentoring, performing or helping out front of house, there are many ways to connect. This autumn you can be involved in making Folkestone Fun Palace (p. 7) and SALT, our new festival about the sea and the environment (p.4 and 5). We will be looking ahead to Women of the World Festival 2016 (p. 19), so keep an eye out for that!

Creative Community is growing to include a new women’s choir, led by Carol Grimes (p.20). This will run alongside our regular improvisation group, who have been meeting at Quarterhouse for the past year. If there is an activity that you can lead or want to take part in, come and talk to us about it.

Finally, don’t miss the early bird booking period for our Christmas show, Santa’s Little Trolls. Most of the shows sold out last year, so although it seems far away – book!

Performing four unique site-specific performances in Folkestone Library, The Edge takes us on a touching and fantastical journey through weather, time and friendship exploring the mythical place where the land meets sea.

Using puppetry and visual theatre In Our Hands tells the story of Alf, a trawler fisherman whose experience and loyalty have put him, and his boat, at the top of the game. But times are changing and so are the rules and regulations surrounding the industry. Can Alf adapt in order to survive?

This show has been developed in London, Cornwall and Folkestone and is funded by Arts Council England.

Weaving together 100 stories written by young people from across the UK, let Sea Story take you on a magical journey over, under, and through the sea. Combining dance, storytelling, and music broadcast through our very own ‘pirate’ radio station, expect storms, shipwrecks, mermaids, jellyfish and a very curious sea creature. Tall Tales Big Moves is a dance theatre company based in East Kent. We are passionate about the stories you find hidden in dance and music, the stories that start where the words end and our imagination takes over.

21 – 24 OctoberSALT is a new festival for Folkestone about the sea and the environment. Expect talks, workshops, installations, shows and exhibitions that will explore the unique coastal environment of this region, the communities it sustains and consider what the future might hold. SALT is for experts and amateurs, campaigners and sceptics with something for all ages. There might even be some wild swimming, for the very brave!

SALT is coming to a space near you, with events at Folkestone Library, Quarterhouse, Sunflower House and the Harbour Arm.

SALT is co-curated by Diane Dever from Folkestone Fringe, Karen Shepherdson from Canterbury Christ Church University and Allegra Galvin from Quarterhouse. It is co-created with the people of Folkestone.

On 4 October 2015 over 100 Fun Palaces will pop up across the UK and globally, celebrating the vision of a very special woman called Joan Littlewood, who had radical ideas in the 1960’s about what culture is and who it is for. Fun Palaces is a campaign for culture that everyone can join – combining arts and sciences, welcoming and free, at the heart of our communities.

Folkestone Quarterhouse and Folkestone Fringe are working together to host a Fun Palace including activities such as Giant Origami, fort building, science experiments and knitting, there will be something for everyone.

And best of all, EVERYTHING IS FREE!

If you’d like to be involved come to a Think In: an open meeting to discuss what our Fun Palace will have in it.

This re-invented new production of Macbeth, Blood Will Have Blood is an accessible and unforgettable introduction to Shakespeare’s shocking story of ambition, greed and the abuse of power.

Summoned by the arrival of the audience, a macabre Porter leads us into the dark heart of Shakespeare’s play, offering young audiences (and their families) a glimpse of life under Scotland’s tyrant King.

Using razor sharp storytelling, a dramatic on-screen world and a heart-stopping soundtrack, this one-man adaptation takes us on a break-neck journey through the blood-soaked world of Macbeth.

Jeremy really, really loves Christmas.

All he wants is for each Christmas to be perfect; mince pies, stockings, mistletoe and especially (and this is the icing on the Christmas cake)… lots and lots of SNOW!

But, who exactly brings the snow? Santa? Rudolph? Jack Frost? No, it’s the one job left in the heavy hands of the Trolls of Winter. However, the trolls are fed up with never getting any of the credit. It’s always those cheery, little elves and that red nosed reindeer celebrated at Christmas, while the hard working trolls miss out.

Not once have they been on an advent calendar or featured in a carol, so this year, unless they get their ugly mugs on at least one Christmas card, there will be NO SNOW!

With silliness, laughter, stunning puppets (and maybe a humbug or two), Pickled Image present a magical Christmas extravaganza.

Simmons), an instructor known for his terrifying teaching methods, discovers Andrew and transfers the aspiring drummer into the top jazz ensemble, forever changing the young man’s life. This Venice Film Festival award winning film by Swedish Director Roy Andersson is a tragicomedy about the human condition. Two salesmen visit the city of Gothenberg, dragging a suitcase of novelty samples from one door to the next. The salesmen are in search of a shop called Party, but the address doesn’t exist so they are lost in the suburbs, standing in for us all in the search for meaning. Watching their bumbling progress, we don’t know whether to laugh or to cry. A quirky, compelling, visual feast of a film about what it means to be a human being.

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (U) Thursday 29 October, 7.30pm

Legendary Studio Ghibli cofounder Isao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies, Pom Poko) revisits Japan’s most famous folktale in this gorgeous, hand-drawn masterwork, decades in the making. Found inside a shining stalk of bamboo by an old bamboo cutter and his wife, a tiny girl grows rapidly into an exquisite young lady. From the studio that brought you Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro, and The Wind Rises comes a powerful and sweeping epic that redefines the limits of animated storytelling.

Winner of the Gotham Independent Film Award for Breakthrough Director, Ana Lily Amirpour’s darkly comic Iranian vampire western is a joyful genre mash-up. Somewhere between a graphic novel, spaghetti western and classic horror A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night follows discontented youngster Arash as he deals with life in a lawless town. Meanwhile a silent, hijab wearing vampire stalks the town’s streets to exact revenge on the men who prey on her fellow women.

A veteran actress (Juliette Binoche) comes face-to-face with an uncomfortable reflection of herself when she agrees to take part in a revival of the play that launched her career 20 years earlier. Olivier Assayas directs this complex, bewitching and fearlessly intelligent new film starring Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart and Chloë Grace Moretz.

20 – 29 November 2015Join us for an even more festive celebration of books, ideas and stories. The 2015 Folkestone Book Festival opens on Friday 20 November with Louis de Bernieres switching on the Christmas lights and talking about his new novel, partly set in Folkestone.

Then as the week goes on, we are delighted to welcome Melvyn Bragg, Lynne Truss, Terry Wogan, Wendy Cope, Robin Ince, Tracey Thorn, Jonathan Dimbleby, Tony Juniper and Princess Michael of Kent to name but just a few of our speakers.

We will showcase local talents, discuss the environment, inequality and the future of the monarchy, listen to stories, go on a tour of Italy, explore the mind and the brain, and celebrate Trollope’s bicentenary. There should be something for everyone, whatever the age, fun for kids and grown ups alike! And this should be your Christmas shopping sorted!

Ticket CollectionTickets that are paid for in advance can be collected on the day, up to 30 minutes prior to the event. Tickets can also be posted to you for an additional charge of 50p. Please check your tickets on receipt.

RefundsWe regret that tickets cannot be exchanged or money refunded, except in the case of a cancelled event.

AccessWe are a fully accessible venue – please inform the Box Office of your requirements.

Concessions Concessionary rates apply (where stated) to under 16s, full time students, senior citizens (age 65+), registered unemployed and registered disabled. Proof of status will be required.

All Women welcome, whatever your state of health or voice or age! See for yourself how singing with others can help your voice, breathing, posture and mood! We will sing everything: Jazz, folk, gospel, pop and show songs.

Working with the unique performer inside you. Working with breath, movement and voice. Working with rhythm and melody. Working towards a performance at WOW Festival 2016.

For the last 12 years alongside her performing work Carol Grimes has run two choirs in London for people from all backgrounds and abilities.

Improv Gym Mondays, 14 September, 12 October, 9 November, 14 December, 7.15pm – 8.45pm, FREE

Improv Gym is a warm, friendly group open to all who want to practice being more ‘in the moment’, to laugh more, and to draw out the playful side of themselves. We’ll play ice-breaker and warm-up games, and practice skills at the heart of improvisation, such as listening, making offers and ‘saying yes’. With no audience and no performance on the agenda, the atmosphere is accessible, fun, and non-judgmental, with the hope of stretching our creative muscles as we interact with each other. You may have some experience of drama or improv comedy, or you may be a complete beginner. Either way is fine, you are most welcome.

How to find QuarterhouseBy Train High speed trains run regularly from London St Pancras International (journey time 57 minutes). The last return train from Folkestone to London is at 22:56. By Car From the M20, turn off at junction 13 and follow signs to the Harbour. (SAT NAV USERS – CT20 1BN)

Parking The nearest car parks are Tram Road (2mins), Payers Park (2mins) and the Harbour car park (5mins). All council car parks charge daily fees starting from £1 per hour. There is limited parking available behind Quarterhouse which requires a parking permit that can be obtained from Quarterhouse. For more information please call Quarterhouse Box Office.

By Bus or Coach A direct National Express coach service runs from London Victoria Coach Station to the main bus station in Bouverie Square, Folkestone. Stagecoach operates a network of routes linking local towns and villages to Folkestone.
