Folens School At Home: Infants Weekly Plan: Week 6 Introduction The purpose of Folens School at Home is to help parents support their child’s learning at home. Shortly after schools closed, we at Folens made all of our resources available for parents to use on FolensOnline. However, we understand that parents may not feel they have the time or expertise to pick and choose the most suitable activities for their child across multiple subjects. So, we turned to some experienced primary school teachers and asked them to put together a weekly plan for parents to use at home with their child. The purpose of the plan is to identify age-appropriate resources that can be used to help children learn and to provide some guidance to parents when using them. Each week, we will publish a new plan and accompanying digital resources for each of the three core subjects, English, Irish and Maths, as well SESE (History, Geography and Science). *We at Folens appreciate that these are challenging times for everyone and that many parents will have a limited amount of time to support their child’s learning. There is no pressure to complete every activity in the weekly plan – it can simply be used as a menu from which parents can pick and choose. Accessing the digital resources The digital resources can all be accessed from FolensOnline. For ease of use, we have included a link to each resource in the plan just below the thumbnail image of the resource. NB: In order to launch each resource, you will need to a) be logged into FolensOnline and b) copy and paste the link from the plan into your browser. Registering with FolensOnline In order to login to FolensOnline you need to register. To do this: 1. Go to www.folensonline.ie and click ‘Register’ 2. Select ‘Teacher’ 3. Launch the Oral Language Poster: Pizza and Pancakes. Read the Starters or the Fliers story with your child, depending on their ability (the fliers story uses more advanced vocabulary than the starters story). Go to explore mode and explore the poster with your child. Ask your child the following questions:

• Where are the people in the picture?

• How do we know they are in the kitchen?

• What ingredients can you see for making pizza?

• What do you like on your pizza? You could play some food word games with your child:

• Name a food that is red/yellow/green etc

• Name a food that is crunchy

• Name a food that is cold

• Name a food that you can peel Play the labelling activity with your child. Encourage your child to drag the labels to the correct objects in the poster. Go to question mode and play the questions. Encourage your child to give complete answers to the questions. Listen to the poem ‘Dad’s Cooking Pancakes’ with your child. Finally, play the activity - have your child add the toppings they would like to their pizza!

Around this time of year, children revise the number stories. Here we will revise the number 9. Begin the lesson by watching the number 9 video. Next, practice making sets of 9 using concrete materials (cubes, counters, pieces of lego) at home. Look for the number 9 at home and when out and about (house numbers, car registrations etc). Here is a helpful video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-7L6OHTOiE

Ask your child, how many ways can you make the story of 9?

Eg. 3+6=9, 9+0=9, 8+1=9 Can you use counters to show the number 9 on a ten frame? See below.

Practice the number formation of 9. Next, do the Number 9 activity to identify sums that add to 9. Finally, print out and have your child complete the number 9 worksheet below (Maths Activity 1: Number 9).

Activity 2: Data

To introduce data, begin by playing the ‘How Many’ activity.

At school, we encourage children to interpret data (information) in rows using real objects, models and pictures. To practice this at home, gather a random selection of cubes/lego pieces. Ask your child to sort them by colour. Count the number in each set. Ask your child questions like:

• Which colour has the most?

• Which colour has the least?

• How many more reds are there than green?

• How many blues and yellows altogether? Help your child to draw a block graph to represent this data (information). Then, play the ‘What can you see?’ activity to help your child to create a block graph. Finally, print and have your child complete the worksheet included at the end of this document (Maths: Activity 2: Data).

First, ask your child, what do you think a plant needs to grow? (air, light, soil, water). Launch the unit 07. Plants: Science. Click on ‘Growing Plants: Video.’ Watch the time-lapse video of a butter bean plant growing. Discuss what is happening. You could plant a butter bean with your child. You will need a glass jar, water, tissues and butter bean seeds. Observe the growth of the seeds on Days 1, 5 and 10. Record the outcomes using the worksheet included at the end of this document (Science: Activity 2: Grow a Butter Bean Plant). Discuss the roots and shoots of the plant and label them. Finally, you could watch a video on Youtube called How Does A Seed Become A Plant? by Scishow Kids: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkFPyue5X3Q
