Introduction: The garments finishing mainly applies to pressing , folding and packing of garments. After completing pressing, the garments are folded and packaging with a pre determined area. Garments are folded and packed according to the direction of buyer’s requirement or in standard area.

Folding: Folding is done after after pressing . In this process garments are folded with a predetermined area.

Objectives of folding: To avoid unexpected creas mark on garments. To keep garments in a carton on a standard

shape. To fold garments with the least amount of

creases.

FOLDING FOR A BASIC SHIRT:There are mainly 4 types available for folding

shirt is given below- Stand up: Collar is folded with body and

situated at 90 degree angle. Semi-stand up: Collar is folded with body

and situated at 45 degree angle. Flat pack: Collar is spreaded as a whole on

the body of shirt. Hanger pack: Shirt is packed and

transported by hanging on the hanger. At the end of folding , garment are placed into a polythene packet, the size of polythene packet is permanent.

BASIC KNIT FOLD – SHORT SLEEVE

Procedure: Comply with the following steps to perform a short sleeve basic knit fold:

Fold the arms straight across back. Fold the shirt side seams across back of

shirt. Fold the bottom edge of shirt about 2-

inches from the bottom. Fold the shirt in half.

HOODED JACKETS:

Procedure: Comply with the following steps to fold a hooded jackets:

Fold left sleeve in half – fold back to side seam.

Fold right sleeve back to meet left sleeve.

Fold hood down. Fold in half.

WOVEN PANT FOLDED SIDE TO SIDE   Close zipper and waist buttons. Fold pant in half, with inseam to out

seam keeping ends of waistband to inside of pant.

Fold leg in thirds – fold bottom edge to above knee and fold up to waist edge.

WOVEN PANT FOLDED FRONT TO BACK Close zipper and waist buttons. Fold pant front to back with fold at rise. Fold leg in thirds – bottom edge to

above knee and fold up to waist edge

LEGGINGS/STIRRUP FOLDED FRONT TO BACKProcedure Comply with the following

steps to fold a leggings/stirrup folded front to back:

Hangtag is attached to seam allowance. Fold pant in half at center with side

seam to side seam

LONG FULL SKIRT

Procedure Comply with the following steps to fold a long full skirt:

Fold flares of skirt toward Center Fold. Fold one third. Fold in half bringing hem up to waist.

LONG SLEEVE FULL SKIRT DRESSProcedure Comply with the following

steps to fold a long sleeve full skirt dress:

With dress laid flat, fold skirt sides toward center back.

Fold left sleeve back. Fold right sleeve over left sleeve with

hangtag going toward front. Fold dress into thirds.

PACKAGING

Packaging: After final inspection & garments folding, the garments are poly-packed, dozen-wise, color wise, size ratio wise, bundled and packed in the cartoon. The cartoon is marked with important information in printed form which is seen from outside the cartoon easily.

APPAREL PACKING SEQUENCE:

After folding garments are packed in polyethylene packets. Generally polyethylene packets are of different sizes. During packing, the position of sticker and other label should be confirmed.

After polyethylene packing , garments are kept in the sorting rack according size and color. Then garments placed in inner boxfrom the sorting rack according to size and color. Packing in inner box according to work order is called is called ‘assortment’.

The packing that is done by the fixed no. of inner box in the cartoon is called cartooning or packing. The carton is sealed with the scotch tape.

Carton bears some information on it e.g. carton box no. carton box size, shipping mark, destination etc.

Maximum weight: The maximum weight of cartons must not exceed 20 kilograms, except where a single product item is contained in the carton, or unless the appropriate lifting signage is on the cartons. Use the following table as a guide when packaging merchandise in cartons.

PACKING TO CARTOONING:Shipment be packed into carton according

to the buyers requirement. It can be packed following four method-

Solid color solid size:The garmens will be same color and size when packed into carton. Here carton contain same color and size.

LABELLING AND MARKING OUTER CARTON MARKINGS Target Australia (TA): minimum font height is 50mm Destination ‘Port’ (eg Melbourne/Sydney/Brisbane/Fremantle) and

Carton No. are required on outer carton are required for specific countries according to local government customs practice.

Bus. Group Name + Business Group specified on contract Product Description – refer contract for details Pre-hung label is needed if goods are put on hangers by factory Special labels requested by Target Buying team . eg.’ NEW LINE’,

‘TARGET ESSENTIAL’   PO = Purchase order No./Order No. on contract. Minimum Font is

8mm C P ID-case pack ID on contract = key code for hardgoods

CONCLUSION Folding and packaging of garments is

very important terms in garments. Folding and packaging should do according to buyer requirement or any world standard process, otherwise exporter will may be fall in any types of critical situation. So as a textile engineer we must need to know about garments folding and packaging method
