T he famous All England Lawn Tennis Club will host its 125th tournament this year. These prestigious Championships have been hosted at Wimbledon

every year since 1877 with the exception of the War Years, which makes it the oldest tennis tournament in the world. It is the only Grand Slam played on grass, the game's original surface, which gave the game of lawn tennis its name.

Lets not forget the men, would you believe the most titles won by a gent was none other than our very own William Renshaw who won 14 titles between 1880 and 1889 with 7 Singles and 7 Doubles, but the true champion has to be “Pistol” Pete Sampras

who dominated the Men’s game between 1993 – 2000 totalling 7 almost consecutive wins during that time, only losing out in 1996 to Richard Krajicek who

knocked him out in the quarter finals but went on to win the title.

These days because of the popularity of the event tickets are allocated by a ballot system, hard to believe that back in 1877 the first game was won by Spencer Gore, from a field of 22, where about 200 spectators paid one shilling each to watch the final.

So dust off that bottle of bubbly, rush out for your strawberries and enjoy it in your armchair like me……. (again)!

Sadly many dogs do not survive heatstroke. The first thing to do is to move your dog to a cooler place and offer them fresh water. You can also begin cooling your dog by applying cool wet towels to their extremities. It is important to seek veterinary advice immediately.

Rabbits and guinea pigs are also particularly susceptible to heatstroke. They are often left in runs in full sunlight with inadequate shade or in hutches with poor ventilation.

Having no fresh water to drink exacerbates the problem. Signs of heatstroke are similar to those in dogs – panting, depression and collapse. It is important to cool them down as soon as possible and seek veterinary advice promptly.

Political Correctness gone mad or a Victory for Equality? Whatever your view we are all likely to lose out because of the European Court of Justices ruling that insurers can no longer base

their premiums on gender.

The ruling will affect many different types of insurance including Health and Life policies, but perhaps the biggest change will be seen in Car Insurance premiums and Pension Annuities. Companies do not have to officially comply until December 2012 but it is possible that we will start to see a change in premiums before this.

Traditionally men get paid a higher Annuity income because actuarially they are expected to die younger than women. The great irony of the EU judgement is that in its attempt to protect women pensioners it may, for many, actually reduce their income. This is because 8 out of 10 Annuities are bought by men whose wives also rely on this income for their pension. Due to the change a man aged 65 buying a Pension

Those buying Joint Annuities, which continue to pay an income to the surviving spouse after the death of the main Annuity holder, will also see a cut in their income. W hen you notice an annoying dripping tap or that one of your radiators is obstinately refusing to heat up, is your fi rst reaction to call for a plumber?

• Dripping taps?

Quite often you can just reverse the washer in the tap fi xing the problem. Turn off the water to the tap from either in the airing cupboard or from under the tap. Operate the tap to make sure the water is off, then using an adjustable spanner remove the top of the tap. Remove the washer and replace facing the other way, reverse the procedure to reassemble the tap and hey presto, no dripping tap.

• Cold radiators?

When cold radiators develop on the heating system people can be forgiven for worrying that it is going to take an expensive system flush to fix the issue. Well that is not necessarily the case. Some times it is just a matter of system balancing, this means transferring heat from a radiator that gets too hot too quick to the radiator that doesn't. This is achieved by restricting the flow to the “quick” radiator and increasing the flow to the “slow” radiator, to do this you need to turn the radiator valve clockwise on one side of the “quick radiator” a few times and turn the valve anti clockwise on the “slow radiator” the same amount. This should remedy the problem and you will be able to repeat this procedure throughout the house.

Household pests often show seasonal cycles. Spring and early summer is the time for the Hymenopterans (or Ants, Bees and Wasps if you prefer), to establish themselves. Ants

are always found in colonies or nests because they are social insects, most bees and wasps are solitary and rarely cause problems.

At this time of year, the large wasp often seen flying around sluggishly, maybe inside houses, is an overwintering queen emerging from hibernation looking for a suitable nest site. She is most likely trying to leave and the safest thing to do is open widows and let her. It’s similar with Bumble Bees. In

fact, these docile insects are under threat from changes in farming practices and

even hard landscaping in gardens, and should be encouraged as much as possible.

in kitchens where there is a ready supply of food in the form of spillages

below worktops and behind kitchen appliances. Now is the time to treat ant nests before they get too big and the foraging workers become a nuisance.

At this time of year, a Hive Bee nest may ‘swarm’, a queen and several hundred worker bees leave to set up new colony. Once the colony has found a nest site, perhaps in a wall cavity, they should to be removed before they get bigger and more aggressive in the summer.

If you're not using your vehicle, you should make a SORN. If you are using it, it

must be insured

D id you know that as from early 2011, a new law will mean that the registered keeper of a vehicle must keep it insured unless they've made a SORN (Statutory Off Road

Notification). If you're not insured and haven't made a SORN, you could face a penalty.

If you're the registered keeper of a vehicle, it must be insured at all times.

The only exceptions are if you have made a SORN for the vehicle vehicles that have been kept off-road since before SORN came into force on 31 Jan 1998 - unless they are brought back into use

New penalties for motor vehicles without insurancetemporarily take a vehicle off the road and cancel your insurance, unless you make the vehicle SORN at the same time. If you're not using your vehicle, you should make a SORN. If you are using it, it must be insured.

If you have a vehicle that is not insured, but which is still taxed you could face a penalty. This includes motor caravans, motorbikes and classic cars – all vehicles that people sometimes leave uninsured for part of the year.

The change in law also affects classic cars if it's taxed but not insured. If you have a vehicle that was manufactured before 01 January 1973 that has a 'nil value' tax disc, it is still considered by DVLA as taxed. So, you should make a SORN if it's uninsured and keep it off the road.

After a long, busy, winter the Barnett Motorsport team were excited about the prospect of testing out the improvements and updates to the racing MR2 at Brands

Hatch on April 17th.

A bumper grid of 54 cars turned up for the first rounds of the Toyota MR2 Championship which is enjoying manufacturer backing for the first time. Rob qualified a respectable 21st after feeling the disadvantage of a lack of winter testing.

Rob said “We had to guess at some of the setup as the suspension, amongst other things, has been up rated” he continued to state that “after qualifying I had a better understanding of the car and we made some changes which paid off in the race, it was just a shame we ran out of time to get the new engine and gearbox in as I think that would have made all of the
