This year we promisea fun morning for all with facepainting, photography and even avisit from the local Fire Brigade, soif Fireman Sam is a favourite in yourhouse, it mustn’t be missed.

T owcester Centre for Leisure will dive into theworld’s biggest fundraising swim on Saturday8th April. Swimathon 2011 is set to hit arecord 580 pools across the UK between

8-10 April, when 22,000 swimmers will raise morethan £2 million for Marie Curie Cancer Care andthe SwimathonFoundation.

Towcester Centrefor Leisure aredelighted toannounce that Beverley, winner of eight Paralympicmedals for swimming will be opening our Swimathonceremony on Saturday 8th April 2011. Beverley (55)has been a wheelchair user since contracting polio asa child in 1954. A car accident in 1981 resulted inparaplegia, but Beverley’s rehabilitation programmeintroduced her to swimming, a sport that soon grewinto her passion.

any task. For every hour bending forwards, have 10minutes standing up right.

• If you’re lifting heavy objects, use your leg andstomach muscles to help take some of the strain.

• Minor aches and pains after using muscles for thefirst time in a while is normal, try having a warmbath which relieves muscle tension.

• If you feel a more severe pain, either whilstdoing something or later the same evening,

try applying a cool pack onto clothedskin for 10-15 minutes and take it

easy, but keep moving the next day.• If you’re in severe pain or an ache lasts

longer than 48 hrs seek professionaladvice. Most pains ease quicker whenthey are treated promptly and you getthe right advice.

Theywent a-maying on May Day Eve into the woods andreturned at dawn on May Day, carrying green boughsof branches freshly bursting into leaf, as tokens thatthey had identified themselves with the revival of naturethat was happening all around them.

The Maypole, was once from ahawthorn tree, and in some areas also from an oak,birch or elm tree. Sometimes they were painted, oftenwith spiraling stripes of bright colours, and someelaborately decorated the ribbons of all colours areattached to the top, and hang down to the ground.

When dancing round the Maypole, the participantshold onto the end of the ribbons (one a piece),weaving in and out around each other, until a beautifulpattern appears around the pole from the top tobottom. Morris dancers, today traditionally performaround the maypole. So however you choose to spendyour May Day Holiday, celebrate 6th May.

According to legend the story of St George waswritten in about 1275, a terrible dragon had ruined allthe countryside around a city in Libya called Selena,making its home in a nearby swamp. It caused havocin the city, so the people gave the monster two sheepevery day to satisfy its hunger. When the sheepfailed, a human victim was necessary and the King’sdaughter was chosen. The king offered all his moneyto whoever would take her place, but nobody would,and the Princess was taken to the swamp.

Just about every other programme on prime timetelevision is a ‘talent’ show for theritual humiliation of the deluded, or anopportunity for ‘D’ list ‘celebrities’ to get on the tellyand make a complete pranny of themselves.I don’t know about you, but I just don’t get it.
