Healthcare & Noise

• Environmental noise and new technologies are driving increased noise in hospitals‑ From 57 dB in 1960 to 72 dB in 2005.

• WHO recommends 35 dB during the day, 30 dB at night, with peaks no higher than 40 dB

• A study by researchers at Johns Hopkins University states:

“We came to the conclusion that regardless of country, type or size of hospital … all hospitals exceed recommended

(noise) levels”

Noise and Patient Outcomes

• Recognized detrimental effects on patient health ‑ Heart rate‑ blood pressure ‑ sleep

• Recognized detrimental effects on treatment outcomes:‑ Delayed wound healing, ‑ increased re-hospitalization, ‑ increased use of pain medication in post-op

• “Noisiness” is a frequent dis-satisfier in post treatment patient surveys.

Recommendations

• MacKenzie and Galbrun offer these practical solutions for reducing noise in hospital environments:‑ Replace metal, lidded trash cans with cans that have a damping system ‑ Attempt to minimize false alarms‑ Customize monitors according to patient needs‑ Use resilient materials on chair legs‑ Lower telephone volume.‑ Install damping systems for Cupboard doors and drawers‑ Use "Quiet, Please" posters

• And… evaluate new equipment for its sound production.

Case Study – The Situation

• 739 Bed hospital• 185 maintenance staff, only 7 capable of

dealing with door hardware.• Doors in general were producing a great

deal of noise and the hospital required a durable but quiet solution.

• Electric latches produce a loud KLUNK each time they are accessed

• Traditional electronic latch retraction utilizes magnetic solenoids that require a high voltage inrush.

• When activated, the retraction of the solenoid results in a loud and abrupt sound.

Case Study – The Solution

The Quiet One®

• The everyday use of mechanical push pads can be noisy.

• High traffic applications and heavy abuse can cause the

exit device to be slammed into hundreds of times per day.

• Von Duprin exit devices are designed to accommodate

this abuse, and utilizes a mechanical damper to provide customers with a quieter solution.

12

Quiet Electric Latch (QEL)

• Innovative damper allows for quiet non-disruptive use.

• Damper decelerates the push pad on the push and

return stroke, eliminating most of the noise associated with exit device operation.

• Motor driven latch retraction is more efficient and

provides a much quieter solution with less of a disturbance.

13

Case Study – The Outcome

• Retrofit to QEL was implemented starting with 24 doors in the pediatric wing. Expansion to other patient areas scheduled.

• Staff can really recognize the noise production differences between the QEL doors and other doors with regular electric latching.

• A soft quiet entrance is what was desired and the staff was not disappointed.
