Like the World Cup and the Olympics,this event takes place every fouryears and is often referred to as theFriendly Games.

Since the first games in 1930 the event hasseen many changes including its name.During this time it has been known asthe British Empire Games, British Empireand Commonwealth Games, BritishCommonwealth Games until finally, at the 1978games in Edmonton, Canada, this multi-sport eventchanged its name to the Commonwealth Games.

The very first games were represented by just 11countries with 400 athletes who took part in 6 sportsand 59 events.

For the games there has been apurpose built village to house theexpected 6,500 athletes and CGAteam officials that will no doubtcapture our emotions and thrill us with

their talents while we watch these highly tuned athletescompete in 17 sports at 14 different venues over the12 days.

Weedon Vets is nowopen for business

It has been nine months since TowcesterVeterinary Centre acquired land and a derelictbuilding on Watling Street in Weedon. Wewere thrilled when we opened our doors for

business on May 12th this year and we are steadilygetting busier.

The purpose built surgery runs as a sister practicealongside our main hospital in Towcester. Our vetsand nurses will see pets by appointment and weare aiming for a friendly family feel when you cometo see us.

The new clinic has operating facilities, as well asdental and radiography machines. If you have farmanimals or horses you can collect medicines fromthe surgery rather than driving to Towcester.

It’s been a long and interesting journey and thebuilding work has been project managed byone of the partners Helen Pope. This started by

demolishing the old building, clearing the sight andbuilding a new bright surgery. One we are all veryproud of.

On July 6th we will be holding a Family Fun Day tocelebrate our opening. There will be a bouncy castle,treasure hunt, BBQ and prizes for the best dressed pet.Our vets and nurses will be on hand to answer anyquestions you may have. Both the minimum wage and the number ofapprenticeships were increased, with the Chancellor

promising to ‘double’ the latter.

The Annual Investment Allowance has beentemporarily increased and extended, from £250,000to £500,000 for expenditure incurred between1 April 2014 and 31 December 2015.

The Government is to simplify the administrativeprocess for collection of Class 2 National Insurancecontributions (NICs) for the self-employed. From April2016 this will be collected via self assessment.

Perhaps it’s not actually one of the most importantpoints from The Budget but it will certainly be one ofthe more visible ones when a new £1 coin starts toenter circulation at some point around 2017.
