DESCRIPTION

With the growing buzz surrounding the SuperPort development, and visits by some of the biggest cruise liners to Liverpool, we’re dedicating this issue to all things maritime. We’ll be taking the opportunity to tell you more about the exciting Port Academy Liverpool initiative and introducing you to some of our partners in the project. This issue also highlights some of the activities we took part in for the International Festival for Business, inspiring young people to ‘have a go’ at some of the skills they may need for future employment in the Liverpool City Region’s key growth economy zones.

SEA YOUR FUTURE What does the sea mean to you – a day at the beach, sailing, perhaps windsurfing or simply ferry across the Mersey?

Well, Britain is an island nation, with over 10,000 miles ofcoastline and some 700 ports – not all the size ofLiverpool admittedly – but all playing their critical role inmeeting your everyday needs for food, energy and goods.Yet, to the majority, the maritime is both out of sight andout of mind. Curious really, given we are surrounded bythe sea and hugely reliant upon it and those who followtheir professions on and around it.

Today’s maritime sector is technological and highly efficient, carrying over 90% of the things around you fromsmartphones to televisions, grain to New Zealand lamb, furniture to cars. Manufactured goods are transported incontainers which are 20 foot units and 1 container can hold13,000 smartphones. The ships are huge – some of thenewest class of Container Ships are the length of 4 footballpitches. People are also big business in the maritimeindustries – the cruise sector is the fastest growing part ofthe European leisure industry and the state of the art vesselsare luxurious and large – imagine 35 double decker busesnose to tail and you have an idea of the kind of length!Offshore energy is key to the UK’s future, both oil and gasand the relative newcomer to the scene, offshore renewables– be that wind, tide or solar. Sport use is increasingly popular, spawning a large number of marinas with Charter/SuperYachts a healthy growth area, particularly in training andproviding skilled crew. Ports and associated activities offeropportunity, particularly in the Mersey area with theSuperport plans.

So what does all this mean to you? In a word, opportunity! The professional world of the maritime is both diverse and stimulating but, if it is to continue to enjoy success, needs the skills of tomorrow’s workforce. For seagoing, current projectionspredict a shortage of up to 5,000 Deck and Engineeringpersonnel by 2020. Ashore, and in particular engineeringbased skills, a 2013 survey reported 92% of employersexperiencing difficulty in recruiting the skills needed; this was particularly evident in the offshore industry.

How do you step up to the mark and take up a careeropportunity within the maritime sector? A good place tostart your research would be the Port Academy Liverpool, created to help train the range of skills which the sector willrequire over the coming years. Expansion plans in theMersey are substantial and you should take a close look atthe range of training available to see what matches youraspirations.

Whilst the shortage figures I have quoted are nationalacross the breadth of the UK Maritime, make no mistake, there is opportunity right outside your front door. Liverpoolhas a venerable maritime tradition and that is set tocontinue full speed ahead with the planned regionaldevelopments.

So take a look at what the Port Academy Liverpool cando to help you be part of the exciting future in a vibrantand rewarding sector - the maritime.

This is great news for the freight andlogistics sector in the City Region and presents an opportunity to place the port andsurrounding logistics infrastructure at the heart of business in the UK– creating aGlobal Freight & Logistics Hub for Northern UK and Ireland.

SUPERPORT Skills for Growth

The increased logistics capacity from thisinvestment in the City Region’s port and logisticsassets has the opportunity to significantlyenhance the whole region’s attractiveness forretail and manufacturing logistics operations, and with it the potential to create thousands ofjobs over the next twenty years.

Mark Basnett, Liverpool City Region LocalEnterprise Partnership (LEP) Executive Directorsaid: “Now more than ever, our future depends ona workforce with the necessary talents andtraining for the jobs of today and tomorrow withinthe freight and logistics sector; and the best way toensure a steady supply of workers is througheducation.

“This is why we welcome Hugh Baird College’s newPort Academy Liverpool as it can help to supply theskills needed for these industries, helping fuelgrowth and ensuring local people benefit from allthis investment and the jobs that will be created.”

National context of logistics growthMr Basnett explained that part of the role of the LiverpoolCity Region LEP is to work, through private sector led LEPBoard and SUPERPORT Committee, to create the conditionsto promote inward investment. He said: “This includes linkingstrategy to skills, transport infrastructure, an availability ofoven ready sites; as well as awareness-raising of the strengthof the offer to a range of stakeholders including cargo owners, shipping lines, freight forwarders, 3PLs, developers andinvestors.

“As a Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), we havefocused on SUPERPORT as one of our keygrowth strategies to realise economicdevelopment on the back of the private sectorinvestment in infrastructure including the newcontainer terminal, Liverpool2 and the newcrossing over the Mersey.”

Multimodal Freight & Logistics HubSUPERPORT's logistic assets include the port, a 36 mile inlandwaterway, international airports, ten motorways, an extensiverail network linking to the West Coast Mainline and easilyaccessible quayside, multimodal and motorway adjacentwarehousing and prime development sites across the CityRegion. Together with a myriad of businesses with expertiseto support and service the sector, these assets comprisestrategically important freight capability.

The SUPERPORT global freight and logistics hub is the mostexciting and important logistics investment in Northern UK -set to transform the way logistics works in the UK whilecreating thousands of new jobs.

The key investments which are helping to foster these newjobs include:

Liverpool2 is the pivotal £350m investment to build anautomated container terminal capable of handling 13,500TEU ships which will open in the third quarter of 2015. Thiswill provide direct access to 35 million people within 150 milesof the port and open up the manufacturing heartland of theUK to an alternative logistics option which has beensuppressed for many years due to a lack of investment tohandle the increasing size of ships crossing the world.

The development of Liverpool2 will also enable Liverpool totake advantage of the rapid growth of Latin American tradeand the £3.5 billion expansion of the Panama Canal, scheduled for completion at the end of 2015, opening up newopportunities for shipping lines.

Mersey Gateway, the £600m six lane highway over theMersey which is included in the Top 100 Global InfrastructureProjects as compiled by KPMG, has begun construction andwill be open in 2017. This will improve the road network andenable a reliable route free from the current congestion.

3MG at Widnes is a 3.5m sq ft rail connected site by the newMersey crossing with a Stobart Park freight facility within. It isa fully operational intermodal terminal facility alreadyhandling over 120,000 containers per year with newreception sidings planned.

Mr Basnett said: “We have a unique opportunity todeliver an economic step change across the regionthrough SUPERPORT and we need to ensure that theregion’s residents can benefit from this step change.

“This requires ensuring the right sites and properties aremade available and developed for logistics operationsand that local people are supported into theemployment opportunities these will create. We needour schools, colleges and universities to equip localpeople with the skills that employers need in this keysector to benefit both businesses and residents – andmake our value proposition to both expanding andinward investing businesses even more compelling.

“Establishing the Port Academy Liverpool is an importantcontribution towards that critical objective. By workingclosely with employers in this sector, Hugh Baird Collegecan better understand and deliver the skills thatbusinesses in this sector need to grow, whilst at the sametime equipping students with industry relevant skills.

This business/demand led approach is the key tounlocking our economic potential. Maritime, port andlogistics has been a key part of what made this CityRegion great and through SUPERPORT it is nowtransforming our future.”

WISTA - UK

Thanks Port Academy Liverpool

WISTA-UK is part of the worldwide organisationrepresenting women involved in all aspects of theshipping industry and has very strong links with theshipping community on Merseyside. The Port AcademyLiverpool welcomed and hosted the event for WISTA-UKand provided a platform to showcase the vital rolewomen and the maritime industry play in the economyof the UK.

Led by local WISTA-UK members, Anneley Pickles, SueHenney of KVH Media Group and Gianna Molica-Franco ofSeren Creative, the event was supported by Port AcademyLiverpool and proved a great success with a series of highprofile speakers invited to address the audience.

Speakers insisted that shipping must inject greater passioninto the arguments for clearer recognition of the benefits ofocean transport, for improved welfare for seafarers and for amore intense recruitment drive. It has been forecast that by2020 the UK will be 5,000 seafarers short.

An expert panel was asked to determine the best way toensure that the industry “becomes more visible” whichcaused much debate and it was agreed that shipping has agreat story to tell and now is the time to tell it. There is apassion for shipping and a growing recognition of theindustry and the commercial benefits they bring.

The development of new port infrastructure in Liverpool isbuilding hope for the future and the Port Academy Liverpoolpromises to translate local skills, training and employmentinto reality. Young people always have hope and so theyneed the tools to progress and flourish. That is exactly whatPort Academy Liverpool is delivering.

The conference in Liverpool gave guests and visitors theopportunity to see the rejuvenation which is going toreshape the economy and industry of Liverpool. WISTA-UKis a strong supporter of the maritime industry andunderstands the benefits the shipping industry will bring toLiverpool - work, commerce, investment and hope.

Before the close of an excellent conference the WISTA-UKPersonality of the Year award was given to Angie Redhead,of the Cruise Liverpool Terminal. Angie embodies the newenthusiasm, vision and verve driving the maritime industryand which is hugely evident on Merseyside.

A big thank you to the Port Academy Liverpool for theirincredible support and unwavering generosity inwelcoming WISTA-UK to the facility. We wish them everysuccess for the future.

The important role of women in shipping was celebrated in June this year during the Maritime, Energyand Logistics events held in Liverpool as part of the International Festival for Business 2014.
