President’s Message ethics CPE for holders of any IIA certifications. Registration is still open so reserve your space today. In February we have our annual student night event, where we will again be inviting students from all of the local universities. Our presenter for the event will be Maunda Land who is the Director of Membership Engagement, Diversity, and Student Programs at The Institute of Internal Auditors. Maunda will be discussing current trends for the internal audit profession and the skills needed to begin and succeed in an internal audit career. As we are discussing ethics in January, our lyrical offerings for this newsletter relate to ethics: “The media is the seduction of human desire (set their money, set their money, on fire), if you try to sell me the truth then I know you're a liar, a liar It's the tyranny of normality, it's the tyranny of normality Our culture has become complacent, and has no desire (take back, take back our empire), and the ethical slaughter of truth needs to be retired, retired”

What Else is Inside?
St. Louis IIA Members - Happy New Year and welcome to 2018! I hope everyone was able to take some time to relax and be with family and friends during the holiday season. In December, we had our annual meeting and Holiday Party at Bixby’s Restaurant in the History Museum. Our speaker gave a wonderful presentation about etiquette throughout history based on information found in the history museum’s library and archives collection. Following the presentation those present spent time networking over cocktails and appetizers. It was great seeing so many of our members attending the event. As we move into the second half of our chapter year, we have some amazing programing coming up. This month we start with our annual 2-hour ethics training. This year we have Nejolla Korris, an international expert in the field of Linguistic Lie Detection. Nejolla’s presentation will cover Personal ethics vs. professional ethics, how easy are ethics to define in the workplace, and does employee behavior influence ethical practice. Don’t forget that this year the IIA has added a requirement for 2 hours of

REMINDER: Beginning in 2018, IIA certified individuals will be required to earn two of their CPE credits in Ethics.
Nejolla Korris is the CEO of InterVeritas International, which provides consulting and training services in the areas of social media risk, social engineering, lie detection, interviewing skills, online investigations, ethics, and litigation support, and an international expert in the field of Linguistic Lie Detection. She is skilled in Scientific Content Analysis (SCAN), a technique that can determine whether a subject is truthful or deceptive. Korris has analyzed documents for fraud, international security, arson, homicide, and missing persons' cases, causing some of her clients to dub her the "Human Lie Detector."
Nejolla will illustrate the challenges in implementing an organization-wide ethics policy. She will also explore how to best embed ethics into a corporate culture when personal and corporate ethics may clash. The seminar's topics will include:
- Personal ethics vs. professional ethics - How easy are ethics to define in the workplace? - Does employee behavior influence ethical practice?

December Meeting Recap
The December meeting and social event was at Bixby’s Restaurant inside the Missouri History Museum. Attendees enjoyed drinks and appetizers and learned about the evolution of polite behavior from Emily Jaycox, a librarian at the Missouri History Museum Library and Research Center. Emily shared examples from the library and archives collections, as well as advice from etiquette books, historic photographs, and drawings to help us discover the ever-evolving standards of politeness that illuminate the relations between men, women, classes, and races.

The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge - St. Louis features 44 guest room suites and services more than 2,000 patients and caregivers each year, completely free of charge. Built in 1995, Hope Lodge - St. Louis has served more than 26,000 cancer
patients and caregivers traveling over 90 miles to receive life-saving treatment. At Hope Lodge, patients live with other
patients going through similar experiences and are supported by caring staff and volunteers.
Please help us support our chapter's annual community outreach by bringing at least one needed item from the
American Cancer Society Wish List to the January Ethics meeting on January 11, 2018. Hope Lodge relies on donations
such as cleaning, kitchen, and office supplies.

This year, the chapter is supporting the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge - St. Louis, which services more than 2,000 patients and caregivers each year, completely free of charge.

Wikipedia defined Volunteering as an altruistic activity where an individual or group provides services for no financial gain “to benefit another person, group or organization”. The definition continues on explaining that Volunteering may have positive benefits for the volunteer as well as for the person or community served. When we volunteer we connect with others, improve lives, strengthen communities, and solve problems while we transform our own lives. January is the mid-point for our chapter year, and our officers are already thinking ahead to our next chapter year, which begins July 2018. Do you want to connect with colleagues from different organizations as well as help strengthen our St. Louis chapter by elevating the internal audit profession? Do you want to develop leadership skills including those associated with strategic planning, teamwork, communication, and problem solving? Please take a few minutes to look at our Chapter Contacts on page 11 of our newsletter for the committees and volunteers who help our chapter run smoothly. We have several committees to choose from that allow different levels of involvement (e.g., working on individually, participating in a group.). Chapter Achievement Program (CAP) CAP is the acronym for Chapter Achievement Program. The program has been established on the premise that the basic mission of the chapter is to serve its members first and then the internal audit profession. The program, sponsored by the International IIA, encourages local chapters to be active both for the benefit of the chapter members and of the local community. Local chapters earn credits for the CAP through in the following categories: a) service to members; b) service to the profession, and c) chapter administration. The Chapter Achievement Program is made up of three performance levels: bronze (685 credits), silver (1,060 credits), and gold (1,560 credits). Thanks to your efforts, our chapter has attained gold status every year since 1997. After ten consecutive years of achieving gold, a chapter achieves Platinum level which this chapter has earned since 2006. So what can a member do to earn CAP points for the chapter? Examples, include:
Attend the monthly chapter meetings; Attend chapter sponsored seminars; Utilize the chapter sponsored Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) review course; Earn an IIA certification; Develop questions for the CIA exam; Recruit new members; Present speeches or training sessions; Write internal audit-related articles for publication; Provide an internal audit internship at your company for a student; and Come up with an innovative way to promote the chapter
