Focus Group

I interviewed 5 people aged 17 - 18, who had a similar music taste to me, to discover what they would like to see on the magazine I am creating.I asked 2 boys and 3 girls, who were:- Sophie R.- Hannah S.- Toby R.- Emily C.- James H.

I asked then - questions and then summarized the answers they gave.

What would you generally like to see on the front cover of a magazine?A main dominant image of either a band or an artist, with some kind of slogan explaining that there will be an article inside the magazine based on that artist / band.

Other than that image and of course the masthead what would you expect? There should be other slogans and sell-lines covering the magazine, advertising that there is more information in the magazine. However it should not be too over-powering and dominated with sell lines. There should also be flasher advertising some competitions inside the magazine.

Generally, what colours do you think should be used?Being an Indie magazine, generally lighter and brighter colours would be more preferable. Using dark colours wouldn't really suit the theme whereas red's and blue's generalises better with indie music and the lighter and happier mood.

For the contents page, would you prefer a large image in the middle with information surrounding it, or smaller images relating to different pieces of text?I think generally, more smaller images would be more suitable. This is because more images can then be used so the different pieces of text have their own images to relate to.

Would you find a band index useful?Definitely, it would give easy directions to the specific band page I wanted.

As an Article would you prefer a review about a band/artists upcoming/ previous album, or an interview with them?An interview with an artist/band would be more appreciative. This is because it gives a deeper insight as to how they feel. It also gives the reader the opportunity to find out more about their favourite artist, what they're planning, and how they feel their year has been.

What type of image of the artist/band would you want?A cool image of them together (If they're a band) but also making them look stylish and cool.

What type of font would you want throughout the magazine?A clear font that is easy to read, and yet at the same time stylish. For the main head-lines the font should be slightly different but still along the same lines, looking stylish.

What type of language would you like the magazine to be based on?The language should generally be relaxed and modern, but not using slang words that people may not be able to understand.
