1. Mind the mud – Make sure your chickens are on a clean and well drained surface – particularly if they have fluffy feet. This will help keep away infection.

2. Keep them healthy – Vitamins are a great way of keeping your chickens healthy and ready to fight the winter elements. If your chickens are looking a bit under the weather vitamins should give them a boost.

3. Watch the water – When it’s below freezing at night time make sure you defrost their water every morning to make sure they don’t de-hydrate.

4. Keep their hutch clean – As the days get shorter chickens will spend longer in their house – make sure it is cleaned regularly and topped up with lots of bedding to keep them nice and warm too.

5. Drop the door – Foxes are very hungry in the winter and they won’t stop at much, the extra defence is needed. Shutting the door also keeps the cold out, chickens can only take so much, they need dry bedding to nest in and space for them to huddle together.

The search is on for the best businesses in North Oxfordshire

Having been a phenomenal success in previous years, the original Cherwell Business Awards have now launched their search for the best businesses in

North Oxfordshire and thus their 2014 finalists.

Nominations are being accepted in a range of categories with the finalists to be announced in March 2014. The three short-listed finalists in each category will be automatically submitted to the prestigious 2014 Oxfordshire Business Awards taking place in June 2014.

There are nine categories that businesses can either be nominated, or self nominate for, plus an overall winner.

The timetable for the awards is as follows:

• Entries can be submitted from 21st October 2013, the shut off date for receipt is January 31st 2014.

• In February 2014 all applications will be assessed and judged, with finalists announced in March 2014.

• Winners will be announced at the Gala dinner and awards ceremony in May 2014.

Have you ever considered who will look after your affairs if you are unable to?

The legal position is, unfortunately, quite complicated. In order for, say, your bank to take instructions from somebody else you will need to appoint an attorney to act on your behalf. An

attorney must act according to strict statutory guidance, and is obliged to act in your best interests at all times.

The best method of appointing somebody to act on your behalf is to grant authority under a ‘Lasting Power of Attorney’ (LPA), which will not be revoked in the event that you lose mental capacity. It must be registered with the court and you are able to give guidance and instructions to your attorney within the document itself.

If you do not have an LPA in place, in order for somebody to make a decision on your behalf they would need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed
