Winter Breakfast Volunteer Orientation
Wednesday, October 30, 2013

Those planning to volunteer at the Winter
Breakfast Program are asked to attend. A
light dinner will be provided (5-6 pm) This will
be an opportunity to meet, greet and hear
program news!
There will also be a presentation by the Har-
riet Comfort Mental Health Players—open
to all FOCUS volunteers starting at 6 pm.

As soon as you can (this week please), please provide FOCUS with feedbackabout your plans to participate or not to participate in the Winter Breakfast Pro-gram. Those who have volunteered in the past, will get “first dibs” on their pre-ferred role. This information will help us to assess the need for new volunteers.

7. HUNGER AMIDST PLENTY EVENT
Hunger Amidst Plenty
Monday, Oct. 21 - 6 PM
At St. Thomas the Apostle School Cafeteria,
42 Adams Place, Delmar NY.
6 PM Dinner & 7 PM Program
A presentation on hunger in our state and area, what faith calls us to do,
and a farmer’s perspective. Join us to learn more about this subject which
affects so many people in Albany County, where more than 36,750 peopleare struggling with hunger, and more than a quarter of those people are not
eligible for government food assistance, so they are struggling alone
(Feeding America).

Mark Dunlea, Hunger Action Network of New York State
Fr. John Bradley, Blessed Sacrament Parish
Dr. Gary Kleppel, Professor of Biology and Director of SUNY Albany Graduate Program
in Biodiversity Conservation and Policy. Kleppel is also a farmer and vendor at the
Delmar Farmer’s Market at Bethlehem Middle School.

Thank you to all who participated in the photo petition to end hunger by
supporting SNAP. This photo petition was sent to our members of
Congress and partners throughout the United States.
Congressman Paul Tonko featured it on his Facebook feed.

6. FARM BILL UPDATE
As our country awaits a resolution to this government shutdown, millionsof low-income individuals and families will become the collateral damage
as this political standoff puts safety net programs at risk. Representatives
in Washington are targeting the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Pro-
gram (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps), with benefit reductions
scheduled for November and even deeper cuts in Farm Bill proposals.
Don't let Congress push us over
the Hunger Cliff .

Candler School of Theology, Emory University,
Atlanta, Georgia. Professor Long will speak on
“Trouble in the Old Mainline Churches: Parabolic
Answers to Honest Questions.”
