Jackfruit festivals

Jackfruit Festivals were held in various parts of the state in the past to popularize the use of Jackfruit and numerous value added products from it. The first jackfruit festival in Kerala was conducted at URAVU, Wayanad, Kerala during 2006. In 2009, a district jackfruit festival was conducted at NIRAVU, Vengeri. The first concerted effort in this regard was the Nat iona l Jackfru i t Fest iva l he ld in Thiruvananthapuram during 2011. A state Jack fruit festival was subsequently held at Kozhikode in the year 2012.

The National Jackfruit Festival 2011 held at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala attracted wide attention. It was a fellowship of farmers, innovators and producers of value added products, scientists, social activists and many others. Exhibition, sales, seminars, training classes and cultural programs added knowledge and color to the programme. Thousands of people visited the exhibition stalls and a new awareness on Jackfruit and its parts as a primary food was created. The training classes imparted knowledge on a wide variety of value added products from the Jackfruit. To many this was a rediscovery of the olden days when Jackfruit from the tender to the ripe stage was an inseparable part of the menu during its season. The National festival could bring together almost all important actors in the field.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Warm greetings!!

We are pleased to inform you about the National Jackfruit Fest (NJFF) from th th

15 to 18 May 2015 at Aranmula, Pathanamthitta District, Kerala.

Jackfruit is a typical example of the richness of the flora of our country. Every

part of this tree is useful in one way or other. But unfortunately jack fruits are

wasted which otherwise could contribute much to the food security and

provide lot of livelihood opportunities for marginalized and deprived.

The theme of the NJFF 2015 is “Jackfruit‐Livelihood Opportunities”. NJFF is

designed in such a way that all interested in Jackfruit may come together and

form a strong network. This collective will continue to take up the cause of

Jackfruit promotion and conservation. This will also create awareness among

public about the contribution of Jackfruit as a staple food which in turn will

bring food security and support local economy.

The Festival includes National Seminar, Exhibition, Skill training on value‐

added jackfruit products, Cookery Competition, Documentation and

Publication, Quiz Competition, network formation and planting jackfruit

saplings, publication of souvenir and proceedings and Jackfruit based food

festival.

We cordially invite you to participate in this programme.
