Dear NCPP, What a difference a new lens, new settings and a new camera bag can make! It has been a busy month of portrait sessions and weddings but adding a new lens and different camera setting has been my highlight! NCPP members never cease to amaze me with their guidance and combined experiences. I encourage all of you to learn more about each other because you might just learn something new! May Guest Speaker – Paul Tumason, M.Photog.Cr., shared his many years of experiences and amazing portrait art displays. Paul’s works was definitely memorable and every image was amazingly composed and prepared. He is definitely a true portrait artist and we all enjoyed his life story and learning more about his passion for photography. Print Competition - Congratulations goes to…1st Place – Peg Jackson “Unveiled” and 2nd Place – Michael Van Auken with “Smokin Hot”. Great job Peg and Michael! We enjoyed many entries and are excited to see the print comp enthusiasm growing each month. Enjoy reading about these talented artists and their winning images in this month’s award winning Focal Point magazine. NCPP’s Bi-Annual Board Meeting was a very productive gathering with great conversation and delicious food. We discussed topics from the projected budget, new board nominations, goals, objectives, membership, electronic print competition, mission statement and our bright future. We will have a brand new board team with a lot of new ideas and perspectives! The lovely suggestion box will be making a cameo appearance soon and looking forward to the feedback of our members so we can best understand, serve and exceed your expectations at NCPP. NCPP has been carefully supported by many volunteers over the years. This organization could not be what it is today without the input, energy and direction of those who wanted to make a difference. In looking forward to the future with a new board team, it also brings a changing of the guards as well. Wayne Miller, Denny Weigand and Tom O’Connor have each dedicated over 6 years of service within NCPP! These gentlemen have gone above and beyond the call of duty and stepped in when needed. They often held multiple volunteer positions that included many hours of behind the scenes time and effort to keep this organization going strong, often surpassing industry standards. Wayne, Denny and Tom will be stepping down soon and will truly begin to enjoy the benefits of all their hard work. Nominations for 2013 are here! We will be announcing the new board nominees and positions soon! It takes teamwork to make this organization succeed and I am so excited to be a part of this new beginning. This has been an amazing year and I have enjoyed the show of support and enthusiasm. NCPP guarantees continued excellence and a vision to succeed. This is only possible with our wonderful team of volunteers and amazing membership! Let’s go team! Your dedicated President, Kevallyn

Preparing your image for "Projected" Image Comp

Here are the basics for creating your "Projected Image" file. We will be setting the file type, dimensions, color space, jpg quality, pixels per inch and file name that that will qualify for NCPP Projected Image Comp. These requirements are the same as PPA with the exception in NOTE 2 below.

1. Create a file that will become the background for your image that is 4,000px Wide x 2,200px High @ 200 pixels per inch. (20" x 11") This size fits our monitor and will be displayed at its optimal.

2. The color space can be sRGB or RGB1998. 3. The file type is a jpg with a Quality setting of 10. Total file size not to exceed 3.5mb. 4. You can apply a color or pattern to this layer just as you would do for a printed image that you

would have entered previously in print comp. 5. Next prepare the image that you are going to insert over the background. The color space, ppi

etc needs to be the same as your background layer. 6. Size the image as you wish in either a vertical or horizontal format. The image size must be at

least 80 square inches. An example is 8" x 10". The image may be placed anywhere you want to put it on the background layer. The positioning of the image on the background layer will be part of your "Presentation" score just like with Printed print comp.

7. Add a stroke or any other edge treatment to the edge of the image you want, or not. 8. All images will be shown only with the background in the "Horizontal Format". This is the same

way that PPA is handling it. The monitor will not be rotated for vertical images. They will be shown just like the example images on the previous page.

9. There is to be no photographer name or studio name on the image. 10. Name your file with the following convention:

• Member's First Name_Last Name_Image_Title_.jpg (Use _ for spaces). • Example file name: Bill_Jones_Mount_Diablo_Sunset.jpg

11. More information for download or viewing at.

NOTE 1: If you plan to submit any of these images to PPA, I would initially save this file as a layered PSD or TIFF. When I was done and ready to submit to NCPP, I would then save it again as a jpg with all of the requirements listed above and submit the jpg. This way if you later decide to enter this same image with PPA or re-enter with NCPP, you can open your PSD/TIFF and make any changes you want. NOTE 2: PPA Projected Submission Specifications match what is required for NCPP, except:

• PPA requires your PPA# in place of your name in the file name: Example: 12345_Mount_Diablo_Sunset.jpg • Link to the PPA site for a video on “How To”: http://www.ppa.com/competitions/tutorials.php

ENTRY RULES AND DEADLINES:

• Cost per each image is $5.00 prior to Wednesday, (at midnight), prior to the Thursday meeting. Fee is to be paid via the NCPP PayPal link.

E-mail images to mailto:[email protected] Limit of 20 Projected images allowed per meeting. This is at the discretion of the Print Chair on a month by month basis.

1st Place: “Unveiled” - by Peg Jackson I’ve taken a series of mixed media art classes at Arts Benicia the past year from Lorri-Marie Jenkins. She calls her classes “A Remarkable, Peaceful Journey.” Every week we create a new art piece using pages of text torn from books, scrapbook paper, wallpaper, tissue paper, fabrics, found objects, paint, etc. etc. etc. What I’ve found especially enjoyable about this technique of creating art is that it takes away the fear of facing a blank canvas. You don’t even have to visualize what you want the finished piece to look like. Just jump into the process by tearing pieces of paper from old books and magazines, paste them onto the substrate, apply some paint, scrape some of it off, add more paper, more paint …… and allow the piece to simply evolve. It allows you to let go of left-brain control and let the right brain play. It is, indeed, a very peaceful and enjoyable way to create art. Since I’ve begun teaching Photoshop classes through Arts Benicia a few artists expressed interest in an Advanced level class. To prepare for the class I decided to experiment with digital mixed media using an approach similar to using traditional materials. I started with snapshots that I’d taken of the fabulous murals on Balmy Alley in San Francisco. (Balmy Alley) Using multiple Layers, Selections, Masking, and Blending Modes, the piece began to evolve. The main subject emerged from the collage of faces and became “unveiled.” In traditional mixed media art, artists use bits of paper torn from books and magazines. These things are not the artists’ original artwork, but by bringing them together in an original way they have created an original art piece. The source images for “Unveiled” belong to the mural artists. I don’t have an ethical dilemma using their artwork for entering my image in print competition. The Electronic Imaging category is for images that have been digitally altered in some way, and the source image does not have to be the work of the entrant. But can I exhibit this piece in a gallery? Can I sell it? This is an ethical dilemma, and possibly a copyright violation. Have I made “Unveiled” sufficiently my own original artwork by combining these mural paintings together into a composite image? I’m not sure. It’s something to discuss with other artists.

2nd place: “Smokin Hot” by: Michael Van Auken Scott and Erika Von Zoog are two major icons representing the artist community at the Historic Arsenal in Benicia. Erika works with glass, Scott works with scrap metal and a blowtorch. Scott and fellow metal artist Thalo Morse created the structure, known as “The All Nighter”, that Scott and Erika are posed on. Erika decided on wearing her shortened wedding dress because she and Scott are celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary this month. We shot this image at 10am because I wanted some flare in the lens. I also like the direction of light on the buildings. I used two “Pro Foto” studio lights without modifiers to balance the light on their faces with the strong backlight and sky. These lights are equipped with portable batteries. I placed one just to the left of the camera, and directed the other to the extreme right which gave dimension on Scott and the acetylene tanks. The camera was a Canon Mark 3. The lens was a 24mm 1.2, and the settings were 1/250th at f-13 with an iso of 100.
