Dear NCPP, I love this time of the year! After moving here from Southern California just over 11 years ago, I still enjoy the cold, wet winters just before the Spring time season. Northern California is so beautiful and often find myself sightseeing and scoping out creative locations to shoot! Hope you are enjoying this weather too and gearing up for a busy shooting season! March Guest Speaker – Lisa Evan’s – NCPP Master’s Night. This was a special evening at Scott’s Seafood Restaurant to say the least! We enjoyed a great turnout from seasoned professionals to new members taking it all in. This evening was a success and many thanks to Lisa Evans, Laura Cottril, Jim Fidelibus and the Board for their generous time and efforts in making this event possible. People’s Choice / Best of Show - Congratulations goes to…1st Place – Michael Van Auken with “Girl in the Window”, 2nd Place – Kevallyn Paskos with “Lovely”, 3rd Place tie – Kevallyn Paskos with “Locked Out” and Nicole diGiorgio with “Unnamed”. The Scott’s Seafood Restaurant display room was really pretty and added to the special event feeling. Thank you to all NCPP members who voted. Read all about these artists and their winning images in this month’s award winning Focal Point magazine. Reminder - NCPP’s New FOREVER HOME – We will see you again at the upcoming April 12, 2012 meeting with social hour 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. and general meeting 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. The lovely Crowne Plaza hotel located in Concord www.crowneplazaconcord.com is officially our much awaited, long term meeting location. We are excited to see you there soon! NCPP’s membership and sponsorship support is growing and we are continuing to reach new goals for our bright future. This could not be possible without the endless volunteer hours of our Board Members and others! A very special thank you to Wayne Miller, Denny Weigand, Tom O’Connor, Mark Gebhardt and Malcolm Slight for their contributions and unrelenting dedication. Nominations for 2013 are just around the corner! We will have a few board and other volunteer positions available. It takes teamwork to make this organization succeed and would love to know if you are interested in getting more involved. Giving back to this wonderful organization is very rewarding and I encourage you to take a minute and consider how you can give back too! Warmest regards! Kevallyn

"Creating the Perfect Portrait" Maybe the clients didn't follow your clothing guidelines, maybe it was the wrong time of day, or maybe it was simply impossible to capture one image where everyone looked good. Don’t worry. Photoshop makes it possible to create the perfect portrait. This program goes beyond the basics of retouching and enhancement. It’s about combining images to create a new reality where everyone looks, well …… perfect!

Bio - Peg Jackson, M.Photog.Cr., is one of the founding members of Northern California Professional Photographers, and continues to serve as a lifetime member on the Board of Directors. She has given innumerable programs and workshops for NCPP and other affiliates throughout the state on the topics of children's photography, creativity and Photoshop. She is also the creator of User Friendly, a monthly article on digital tips, tricks and techniques, published in previous issues of the Focal Point. For nearly thirty years Peg owned a successful portrait studio in Morgan Hill where she enjoyed photographing babies, children, families and pets. Two years ago she made the difficult decision to close her portrait business, but she continues to use Photoshop and Painter to create digital artwork. Peg currently works at Arts Benicia, a non-profit community arts organization.

Preparing your image for "Projected" Image Comp

Here are the basics for creating your "Projected Image" file. We will be setting the file type, dimensions, color space, jpg quality, pixels per inch and file name that that will qualify for NCPP Projected Image Comp. These requirements are the same as PPA with the exception in NOTE 2 below.

1. Create a file that will become the background for your image that is 4,000px Wide x 2,200px High @ 200 pixels per inch. (20" x 11") This size fits our monitor and will be displayed at its optimal.

2. The color space can be sRGB or RGB1998. 3. The file type is a jpg with a Quality setting of 10. Total file size not to exceed 3.5mb. 4. You can apply a color or pattern to this layer just as you would do for a printed image that you

would have entered previously in print comp. 5. Next prepare the image that you are going to insert over the background. The color space, ppi

etc needs to be the same as your background layer. 6. Size the image as you wish in either a vertical or horizontal format. The image size must be at

least 80 square inches. An example is 8" x 10". The image may be placed anywhere you want to put it on the background layer. The positioning of the image on the background layer will be part of your "Presentation" score just like with Printed print comp.

7. Add a stroke or any other edge treatment to the edge of the image you want, or not. 8. All images will be shown only with the background in the "Horizontal Format". This is the same

way that PPA is handling it. The monitor will not be rotated for vertical images. They will be shown just like the example images on the previous page.

9. There is to be no photographer name or studio name on the image. 10. Name your file with the following convention:

• Member's First Name_Last Name_Image_Title_.jpg (Use _ for spaces). • Example file name: Bill_Jones_Mount_Diablo_Sunset.jpg

11. More information for download or viewing at.

NOTE 1: If you plan to submit any of these images to PPA, I would initially save this file as a layered PSD or TIFF. When I was done and ready to submit to NCPP, I would then save it again as a jpg with all of the requirements listed above and submit the jpg. This way if you later decide to enter this same image with PPA or re-enter with NCPP, you can open your PSD/TIFF and make any changes you want. NOTE 2: PPA Projected Submission Specifications match what is required for NCPP, except:

• PPA requires your PPA# in place of your name in the file name: Example: 12345_Mount_Diablo_Sunset.jpg • Link to the PPA site for a video on “How To”: http://www.ppa.com/competitions/tutorials.php

ENTRY RULES AND DEADLINES:

• Cost per each image is $5.00 prior to Wednesday, (at midnight), prior to the Thursday meeting. Fee is to be paid via the NCPP PayPal link.

E-mail images to mailto:[email protected] Limit of 20 Projected images allowed per meeting. This is at the discretion of the Print Chair on a month by month basis.

1st Place: “Girl in the Window” by Michael Van Auken I was at the Commandants mansion in Benicia with Bambi Cantrell, Jim Garner and an amazingly talented group of models, assistants, stylists and photographers.

How could I go wrong? Bambi and Jim were working on a quick reference posing guide called the GoBook. It was playtime. One of the most intriguing aspects of the mansion is the lack of furniture. This environment allows for a simple and isolated portrayal of the model. Overexposing the light from outside the window creates an ethereal effect. I determined the exposure on the model using the Expodisk. Jonathan Penny enhanced, printed and mounted the final print. He creates a customized image with a variety of texture layers, Photoshop adjustments and exceptional workmanship. For more information you may visit him at jonathanpenny.com. Five out of four wow’s on the wow meter for this very special “Night with the Masters.” The artistic talent in the room was overwhelming. The Masters, The Others, the spousal equivalents, the NCPP crew, Laura Cottril and of course the always lovely and talented Lisa Evans rocked the house. Proud to be an NCPPer, MVA

2nd Place Kevallyn Paskos “Lovely”

3rd Place-Tie Nicole diGiorgio “Untitled”

3rd Place-Tie Kevallyn Paskos “Locked Out”

“Lovely”

This image was taken during a styled shoot inside a historic hotel in downtown Benicia. The room was very old Hollywood with white ceramic and pink décor. For this particular pose, we asked the model to sit against the wall above the bathtub. We used an Alien Bee strobe to illuminate the scene and whalla! Her retro styled hair and makeup were enhanced by adding softness, pink hues and a black and white effects in Lightroom.

“Locked Out”

This image was shot in downtown Benicia just outside a run-down bar. The porch had been a door entrance that lent us a great podium! I really liked the rough and worn textures of this image to compliment the dog’s coat and imperfections. The image was enhanced by using a gritty black and white with sharpening Lightroom presets.

“Untitled”

I was at a wedding reception and saw a girl sprawled casually on her tummy on the dance floor. I threw myself to the ground and got this little gem. Such a beautiful child!
