    CONCEPT

This interactive brochure serves a dual purpose not only can you choose your pattern, it also educates you about the discoveries made by NASA on the planet Mars. The patterns are the visual interpreta-tion by the designer based on the facts and figures. The patterns can be torn off and used for different art and crafts. There are a few DIY art projects mentioned which you could try or juggle up your own creativity. This series is specially designed for the Space Geeks(be it kids or elders). We have been speculating for a while now about the life on Mars - taking inspiration from that the designer of this series has tried to form her own characters / spe-cies from Mars and hence named it The Marachters.

Of all the planets in the Solar System, Mars is the one that people believe is most likely to contain or to have contained life. In 1900, a prize was offered to the first person to be contact an extra-terrestrial being. However, this extra-ter-restrial being was not allowed to come from Mars because that would make the competition too easy! In 1938, a radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells (a story about an invasion of Earth by Martians) caused a near pan-ic in America because so many people believed it to be true.

    DIY:ROCKET CAR

Build the body of your paper car using pattern paper of your choice. Leave the back of the body open and wide enough to hold a partially inflated balloon. Insert a wooden stick into a straw, then attach a wheel to each end of the stick. (The ends of the stick should protrude slightly from the ends of the straw; you can cut either to fit the other, depend-ing on the size of your car.) Affix the straw to the base of the car using tape. Repeat with another stick, straw and 2 wheels. Tape the straws firmly to the underside of your paper car body. Test your car by rolling it without the rocket. The car should move in a straight line. Tape the top of the deflated balloon to the inside of your rocket car. Make sure you can inflate the balloon without it coming loose. Blow up the balloon as much as you can in the space permitted by the rocket car. Fasten the end of the balloon with the paper clip. Place the paper rocket car on the ground and remove the paper clip. Your rocket car should zoom away.

    DIY: JUNK ACCESSORIES

To make the pendant, choose nay interesting part of the marachters from the pattern of your choice. Make minimum of 12 copies, print it at 100%, and cut out the shape very carefully with an X-acto knife. Glue the shape into a stack, applying glue sparingly. Sometimes its helpful to use the tip of the bottle to smear the glue around a bit. clear glue from Office Max really works. As the glue dries, the pendant will harden nicely. If you wanted to seal it, you could brush on some hard coat Mod Podge or apply a coat of clear acrylic gel medium.

Mars is believed to have had water flowing around it like Earth once. It may have had a blue sky too. However, it is un-likely that it had grass, trees and plants like Earth has now.

    DIY: BOOKMARKS

Brush rubber cement onto a piece of cardstock in an area larger than the size your finished bookmark will be. Stick on a scrap of chosen marachter, smoothing out any wrinkles. Flip the cardstock over and repeat for the back side of the bookmark. Mark the edges of your bookmark with a ruler and pencil, then cut it out using a sharp scissors. Punch a hole at the top and tie on a bit of thin threads..

    DIY: SPACESHIP

To make your own circus spaceship, youll need two colors of the the marachter pattern, scissors, needle, thread, pencil, ruler, and two beads.Cut the paper into strips that are 3.5 long and 0.5 wide. (This makes a small ornament about 3 in diameter.) Cut 9 strips of each color. Cut two 0.75 circles. Tracing around a penny works nicely. Fold the paper strips in half. A crisp fold isnt needed; just a light crease will do. String a bead onto a length of thread. Then push both ends of thread through the needle so the thread is doubled. Poke the needle through one of the circles to string it next to the bead. Then string on all the paper strips near one end, alternating colors. After all the paper strips are added, begin threading the opposite ends onto the string. To do this, start with the strip you put on first (the one next to the paper circle). Take its loose end and push the needle through it. Continue threading on the paper strips in order. Theyll naturally begin to fan out as you go. Add the second paper circle. Pull the needle off the thread. Feed the bead onto one of the loose ends of thread, then tie both ends of thread in a knot to hold the bead on next to the circle. If your spaceship hangs a little crooked, thread the needle again and push both ends of thread up through the underside of the bead and out through the top so both ends of thread emerge. Tie off a loop and hang that spaceship. You could also try stringing a piece of a drinking straw inside of the ornament to act as a spacer and help it keep its shape.

We can see how long Mars has been a dead planet by the number of meteorite impacts on its surface. In compari-son, Earth and Venus have fewer impact craters because they have newer surfaces formed by recent geological activity.

Cut out ten marachters pattern circles, using a jar lid or CD for a tem-plate. In each circle, cut eight evenly spaced slits toward the middle, stopping about a half inch from the center point. With a pointed pen or sharp pencil, curl each tab into a cone and secure with a dot of glue. If you can pull off a tightly rolled perfect point, congratu-lations. Cut two small pieces from a wide rubber band. These will hold the ornament together at each end. Thread a needle and knot the ends of the thread together. String on one of the rubber band pieces. Push the needle through the centers of five stars with their flat sides face down. Turn over the remaining five stars so their flat sides are facing up and thread them on, followed by the second rub-ber band piece. With a chopstick or pencil, push down on the rub-ber band to compress the stars into a ball while pulling upward on the string with your other hand. The rubber should hold the stack to-gether without requiring a knot. Adjust the paper cones as needed to make a pleasing shape. Tie a loop in the thread for hanging if desired.

Use out tiny scraps from the leftover patterns and, also cut photos of pillows and tablecloths and peoples shirts and made them into mag-nets.Place the glass marbles on the paper to determine how many can fit and how the design will crop with the marble. Cut the paper in squares slightly larger than the glass marble. Paint Modge Podge on the flat side of the glass marble. Place the Modge Podge side down on a cut piece of your paper. Repeat this process for as many mag-nets as you are making.Let the Modge Podge dry for 20-30 minutes. When can you no longer see white Modge Podge, the glue is setup and the paper is ready to be cut. Cut along the edge of the glass marble. Cut all the way around.Your paper is now perfectly sized for the mag-net.You can see the paper design through the glass marble. Put some E-6000 glue on a magnet. Set on the back, flat side of the marble.Repeat on each magnet. Allow the glue to setup for 10 minutes. You can also glue a tack to the back and use them on your bulletin board.

The first space probe to take pictures of Mars surface (Mariner 4 in 1964) is still in space although inactive, orbiting the Sun. Still orbiting Mars itself are Mariner 9 (launched in 1971, now in active), Viking 1 and 2 (launched in 1975, now inactive), the Mars Global Surveyor (launched in 1996, now inactive), Mars Odyssey 2001 and Mars Re-connaissance Orbiter. These are American NASA space probes. Eu-ropes active Mars Express (launched in 2003) is currently in orbit of Mars. Russian probes orbiting Mars are Mars 2 and Mars 3 (launched in 1971), Mars 5 (launched in 1973) and Phobos 1 (launched in 1988). None of these are active. Japan launched Nozomi in 1998, but it ran out of fuel and now floats around the solar system around the Sun.

    DIY: MINI MEDALLION

To make a mini medallion: Cut a 3/4 strip off a piece of 6 ma-rachter pattern paper of your choice, and accordingly fold it to create tiny pleats. Join the ends together with a bit of glue or double-stick tape. Cut a couple sizes of cardstock circles to layer for the center. Press the pleated circle flat and glue your center circles onto it. It will want to pop back up, so set a quarter or something lightweight on top until it dries. Or hold it down with one hand while you surf the in-ternet with the other, my chosen method. Cut more paper into rib-bon tails and glue them to the back. To make larger medallions, cut wider paper strips and splice several accordian-folded pieces together.

Tear up a piece of marachter pattern, cut it into a rectangle. Lay the paper on a table with one of the long edges closest to you. Fold the pa-per in half lengthwise. When the two edges match up, use your thumbs to make a sharp crease along the fold. Take the upper left corner of the top layer of paper and fold it diagonally down toward the first crease you made. When the edges match up, use your thumbs to make a sharp crease along the new fold, which should create a small triangular flap. Turn the paper over. Take the upper right corner of the top layer of paper and fold it diagonally toward you, until the edge lines up with the first crease you made. When the edges match, make a sharp crease along the new fold. (This is a mirror of what you did in step 4. Take the newly formed diagonal edge on the right side of the paper, and fold it straight down toward the first crease you made. When the edges match, make another sharp crease. Turn the paper over, and again fold the diagonal edge down toward the first crease you made; make another sharp crease. The paper should now look like a triangle with a 90-degree angle. Form the wings by flipping the airplane over and repeating steps 7 and Hold the paper in one hand along the first crease you made. Let the wings of the plane flare out. At a point 4 or 5 inches from the nose of the plane, make a 1/2-inch rip in the bottom part of the plane; make another rip 1/2 inch behind it. Fold this tab up. Hold the airplane near the tab and toss the plane with an overhand, horizontal forward motion.
