About FMC Technologies FMC Technologies, Inc. is a leading global provider of technology solutions for the energy industry. FMC Technologies designs, manufactures and services technologically sophisticated systems and products such as subsea production and processing systems, surface wellhead systems, high pressure fluid control equipment, measurement solutions, and marine loading systems for the oil and gas industry.

FMC Technologies Streamlines Business Processes with AeroScout Wi-Fi RTLS and Asset Tracking Solution.

The ChallengeFMC Technologies’ Dunfermline Subsea Facility is more than 213,000 square feet. The facility manufactures subsea trees, wellhead systems and associated equipment. The production and testing environment is dynamic and assets are regularly on the move. A facility of this size spends valuable time manually searching for mobile assets necessary for production resulting in longer production time and slower throughput.

The Solution and Benefits

FMC Technologies looked to their technology partner, Boston Networks, to design a robust, scalable and future proof solution. Boston Networks designed a tailored Wireless LAN and selected AeroScout’s Real-Time Location System (RTLS) and Asset Tracking Solution. The solution leverages FMC Technologies’ existing Boston Network Wi-Fi infrastructure making deployment quicker, easier and cost effective.

The Asset Tracking Solution is monitoring components used in manufacturing petrochemical wellhead devices, which are commonly used to cap oil pipes on the seabed. Each mobile assets was assigned an AeroScout Wi-Fi RFID tag that displays on their MobileView software showing, in real-time, the location of tagged mobile assets. Real-time visibility of these assets throughout the manufacturing process is crucial for:

• Improving and optimizing operations

• Increasing production throughput

• Improving plant health and safety

Case Study | Lean Manufacturing

The environment in which the devices are used and rigorously tested, the asset tracking tags needed to be waterproof and ATEX certified. AeroScout’s Real-Time Location System (RTLS) and Asset Tracking Solution is now fully operational within FMC Technologies’ Dunfermline Subsea Facility, a 213,000 square-foot plant.

FMC Technologies is also using the solution to track assets for which it is required to hold a license: the solution helps ensure that FMC Technologies doesn’t breach its licenses and automates reporting for audits

About Boston NetworksBoston Networks is a leader in the design, planning, installation and support of high-performance Intelligent Building Systems and Wireless Solutions. Specializing in Cabling Services, Network Infrastructure, Wireless LAN & WAN and Integrated Security Systems, encompassing CCTV, Access Control, Fire Safety & Intruder Detection, we offer the best of breed technologies and deliver a comprehensive range of bespoke solutions and professional Support Services throughout the UK.

The tracking system we now have within the facility allows us to track high value assets in real time and helps us comply with our specialist statutory licenses. We are now entering Phase II to extend the tracking system to other assets and production items within the facility. The tracking system is now being considered by various sites within our global organisation to assist with our production flow and streamlining throughout the business.
