Congratulations marathon competitors! All your hard work and dedication has paid off and we had another great Fargo Marathon this year. The streets are alive and are filling up fast with athletes from the FM area. Summer is a great time to take advantage of the beautiful trails and outdoor recreation in the Red River Valley; it is also a time to focus on your fitness and wellness.

The growing population of runners in the area has spurred an interest for outdoor recreation and activities. The advantages of getting outside to workout is availability 24 hours, low-cost exercise and chances to enjoy the true beauty around the Fargo-Moorhead area are everywhere. I would encourage everyone in Fargo-Moorhead to find one pastime they enjoy doing outdoors and stay dedicated to that activity over the summer months.

FM Stride is getting outdoors as well. This issue will feature some of the top professional golfers in the area with great tips and advice on how to advance your golf game. We are also featuring the new KotiKites & Windsports, a fun way to enjoy the outdoors and otherwise inconvenient wind in the Red River Valley. FM Stride took the initiative to line up the top 5 campgrounds within one hour of Fargo-Moorhead, so you will never run out of activities on the weekends.

As we all know, exercise is just one aspect of being healthy. This summer, FM Stride is recognizing the local farmers markets in the area. Local food is not only proven more nutritious, but also supports the local economy. With gas

prices rising this summer, there’s no better time to experience the benefits and low-cost of local, organic food.

health & Nutrition/Farmer's Market

How long have you been in the organic food business? My parents started this business in 1980 and I have been involved ever since.

Where do you get your produce? We grow all of our produce on a farm outside of Hawley, MN. We don’t use any chemicals, so everything is completely organic andgrown by hand.

Aside from plants, do you have any meats? We don’t sell meat products, but we do have organic eggs for sale. They come from a local family whose children took on the project of raising chickens. There are over 90 chickens and they produce about 80 eggs everyday.

While it may not feel like summer here in

Fargo-Moorhead, inside Hildebrants it is always glowing. The scent of fresh flowers fills the air as the wind gently passes through owner, Trina Kalm’s green house. Hildebrants hasbeen in business for over 30 years and provides local residents with fresh, organic fruits and vegetables.

Why would someone come to a farmers market over a grocery store? The food is cheaper and fresher. Also, there is no middleman, so the cost of transportation is eliminated. The food is fresh because it is closer to the source and we know that it is more nutritious because it is grown without pesticides. Local food also supports the local economy.

How many locations do you have? This is my only location, but my good friend Amanda runs Ladybug Acres in the parking lot of the South University Kmart.

What is one crazy factabout Hildebrants? We lost our roof last summer from the wind.

Three tips for someone who wants to start their own organic garden in their backyard:

Before you get started it is important to have a plan! What sort of plants do you want to grow? Make sure you don’t crowd your plants. They need their own space and room to grow. To keep things organic, instead of pesticides, use ladybugs. They help control pesky insects such as aphids.

health & Nutrition/5 Element

For Juliet Trnka at Five Element in Fargo, yoga and holistic

health has not only been a subject to study, but a way of life. Juliet- “Yoga is integrating the body, breath, mind and emotions. When these work together we experience optimal health and happiness.” Juliet has traveled the world studying eastern traditions and has been teaching the art of yoga for over seven years. She has brought her experience back to the

Fargo-Moorhead area and now offers classes in downtown Fargo.

How do you take a holistic approach to your training/exercise experience? Holistic means addressing all parts of something and recognizing them as interconnected. In classes and private sessions, we not only work with the body through asana (yoga postures), but also with focusing the mind and breathing. We start our classes discussing topics like healing with food and herbs, or how to work

skillfully with our emotions. In this way we try to connect with every aspect of the student.

Why is yoga an essential part of training/exercise?Yoga is different from other forms of exercise. It is essential that students be willing to work with their bodies rather than against them. In yoga, even though we work hard physically, we train to respect the body and not force it to do things it’s not ready to do.

Paradoxically, the more we respect the edge of our capacity, the more that boundary softens and allows us to practice more deeply than we could have by force.

What is the atmosphereof 5 Element? The atmosphere at 5 Element is calm, accepting and grounded. In this environment, the students can practice posture without distraction and the worry of being judged or compared to others. They can also relax knowing that their instructor can give them variations of postures and individual guidance. What is ayurveda and how is it related to yoga or holistic practices? Ayurveda is a sister science of yoga and comes from the same ancient roots. It is the practice of skillfully using one’s diet and lifestyle to achieve and

maintain excellent health. Specifically, it uses a diet of whole foods, herbs, breath practices and lifestyle

observances (related to sleep and activity) to bring the body into harmony. Really, yoga and ayurveda were never meant to be practiced

separately. Yoga integrates the body and mind, while ayurveda is used to resolve any imbalances that might be creating illness or disease. Using these two modalities together can yield wonderful results. Indeed, the goal of ayurveda and yoga are to prevent ill health, but to be balanced and satisfied on all levels, free from physical, mental and emotional imbalance.

If there is one thing that you would like people around Fargo-Moorhead to know about 5 Element, what would it be? 5 Element is a truly unique environment that offers a scope of experience that goes beyond yoga classes. Personal guidance in diet, balancing herbs and self-care for muscle pain issues are available. My goal is to provide a space where people can grow in compassion and self-understanding along with strength and flexibility.

Is My Body Fully Recovering After Working Out?

Here are some tips to improve the muscle recovery time, whether after a run or a strength workout. The average amount of time it takes for muscles torecoveris36-48hours.Talktoyourtraineroranothertrusted

professional on the types of exercises that decrease the recovery time, the timing of certain exercises and what is the best workoutfor your body.

Drink WaterDrink half of your body weight in ounces of pure, filtered water. The commercial bottled water brands (Dasani, Aquafina, etc.) are highly acidic. These will NOT reduce the recovery time and impedes how our body heals. Instead, drink filtered water that is stored in a Klean Kanteen or glass container. Add lemons, limes, cucumbers or frozen berries to your water to kick boredom.

Get Proper RestKnow what your body needs for rest each night.Somepeoplefunctionadequatelywith6hoursofsleepandsomewith9hoursofsleep.What is most important is that your schedule is regular each night of the week.

Alkaline vs. AcidicEat alkaline foods instead of acidic foods. Acidity in the body creates a space in your body for disease to foster. On the other hand, alkalinity creates healing and health, therefore does not allow disease to set in. Some examples of these types of food include: Avocado, raw greens, cauliflower, cabbage, celery, carrots, peas, almonds, apples, cantaloupe, honeydew and oranges, bananas. Foods to reduce or avoid: dairy (pasteurized, non-organic), boxed food, wine, white pasta, fruit juice, sugar sweeteners (aspartame, NutraSweet, Splenda, sucralose) and microwaved foods.

ProteinConsume high quality protein drink (women – 15-20g, men – 20-25g) and high glycemic carbohydrate within 20 minutes of a workout. The protein drink is key for recovery and the high glycemic carb replaces glycogen (the body cell’s basic fuel). High glycemic fruits are grapes, pears, blueberries and pineapple. High glycemic vegetables are carrots, corn, sweet potato and squash.

Grocery ListTry These This Month!

Choose Egg Whites Over Whole EggsWhile the yolk in an egg does provide

healthy vitamins and minerals, it also

comes with the cost of high cholesterol.

If you are concerned about high blood pressure, eliminate the yolk.

Choose Whole Grain Over No GrainWhite, starchy carbohydrates can seem appealing to the eye at first glance, but your liver is screaming

“no way!” This fast absorbing carbohydrate gets broken down into glucose at warp speed, spiking your

blood sugar and forcing your liver to convert it to glycogen and later to fat.

Next time, try grabbing some whole grain with fiber, which will slow digestion down and keep your blood sugar steady.

Choose Turkey Over PorkBaconispartofanAmerican

breakfast tradition, but what

most people don’t realize is

how unhealthy traditional

bacon is. It doesn’t have to

be! Next time you’re in the

grocery store, opt turkey

bacon for your next breakfast.

With thousands of selections in a grocery store, it's not always

easy to tell what's good for us and what's not. Many foods might appear healthy at first glance, but in reality are actually bad for your diet. Here are some suggestions to sharpen your food selection skills.

Page 21: FM Stride Magazine June

21 MAY 2011

Choose Coconut Oil over Vegetable OilDon’t let the name vegetable oil fool you.

This deceitful ingredient is called for in many

cooking recipes; however, it is loaded with

saturated fats. Instead of vegetable oil,

try substituting for coconut oil ,which

contains more polyunsaturated and

monounsaturated fatty acids

(the good fats).

Choose Romaine Lettuce over IcebergAlthough iceberg lettuce alone is not

bad for you, it’s also not good. Iceberg

lettuce is considered empty calories

because of its high water content.

Instead, pick up some romaine lettuce

or mixed greens, as these types offer

phytonutrients and vitamins that other

lettuce groups lack.

Choose Hot Sauce over Ketchup

If you can’t stand the heat,

get out of the kitchen! If

you’re looking for more

flavor don’t rely on

sugar-packed ketchup

to get the job done. Try

different kinds of pepper

sauces to add more

flavor to your dish. These

sauces have been shown

to boost your metabolism

and actually help burn fat

instead of pack it on.

Choose Yams over Baked Potatoes

It’s hard to turn down a loaded

baked potato with all the butter,

sourcreamandcheese.Butif

you had to take a look inside

your arteries you might change

your mind. Yams on the other

hand are loaded with slow-

digesting carbohydrates

and are packed with

vitamins and nutrients

such as beta-carotene.

Fitness/Yoga

YOGAYoga is not only a great way to stretch out your body, but it has been

known by those who practice it to relax both the body and the mind. The main concentrations of yoga are exercise, breathing and meditation. Here are four basic yoga stretches to help you relax and stretch before or after a workout. Each can be held for 30 seconds to one minute (rest and repeat 3 times).

Downward DogDownward-Dog is a top-notch upper body strengthener. Also, as an inversion (meaning your hips are higher than your heart), it increases circulation.

Now that summer is upon us, it is not only important to protect our skin with sun

block, but also to protect our eyes with shades. During the hot summer, FM Stride wants to make sure you stay cool with the latest trends of sunglasses from the Sunglass Hut in the West Acres Mall.

We are the ultimate destination for premium sunglasses.

We have two stores in West Acres. One is by the Finish Line and Hollister and we just opened a new store in Macy’s.

The Sunglass Hut is for everyone. Whether you are looking for style, quality or protection, we have your eyes covered. Many people don’t realize the importance of protecting your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays.

We have Versace, Oakley and Arnette for those looking for a sporty glass. And of course,Ray-BanandMauiJim!

I can’t tell you how many people tell me they can’t wear sunglasses because they get

headaches or become

dizzy. This is because the glasses they have are low quality. Come in and we will help you find a quality pair of shades that will keep you comfortable.

Of course! People are starting to see the

advantage of multiple pairs to change a look. I think sunglasses are the most expressive accessories that someone can use.

Breaking WindKoti Kites and Windsports store is here

and blowing people away with cool kites!

Trevor Ibach is no stranger when it comes to the

wind. The owner of Koti Kites and inventor of "The KitoReel," an automated kite spool and winder, has recently combined his love for the wind and opened a fresh new store located in Downtown Fargo. Koti Kites is more than just the kindofkitesBenFranklinflew around, but it's the kites that you attach to your body and fly around a lake at 50 miles per hour. FM Stride stopped by to talk with Trevor, Ian and Jesse about the new store.

Continued on next page

in Fargo-Moorhead

Page 40: FM Stride Magazine June

Q & A with Trevor Ibach1.) How did Koti Kites come to be?

I invented an automated Kite reel called the KitoReel, where you press a button and the kite goes up, and you press a button for the kite to roll up. My experience with that gave me ambition to open a store in Fargo.

2.) Why Koti Kites? Let's face it, there is wind around here! We want to see people outside again and having fun. There are so many different products for people to enjoy. We also have some great instruction courses to help educate too.

3.) Events?Check out the Jamestown Kite Festival this month on June 11th and 12th.

4.) Kiteboarding seems tough, how do we learn how to do it? Jesse is our instructor and holds classes frequently to educate customers about how to use the equipment. When you kite boardyouhave800lbsattachedtoyou,soitdoestakesomeinstruction and responsibility to fly safe. Once you get the hangof it, it's all fun and games!

6.) What's next for Koti Kites? This area has comparable wind

measurements to Hatteras, North Carolina, where one of the nation’s largest kiting events is held each

year. We would like to host an event orraiseawarenessinKiteBoarding

in this area. It would be great to see kids come in here and use our gear to

someday turn into a pro kite boarder. The closest pro kite boarders are in Minneapolis.

Our wind blows Minneapolis' wind out of the water! Pun intended. We would like to bring

an event like the Milacs Kite Cross to the Detroit lakes area. If a diversion is put into place in FM,

we will have the best place in the nation for kite boarding and water sports.

Heads Up on BeautyH

eads Up is not the average hair salon. There are not multiple rows of chairs with a dozen

stylists. There are three chairs with three stylists. At Heads Up, you can avoid the chaos that comes with a larger salon. Also, Heads Up does more than hair and nails, they’re also a boutique. It would seem most people wouldn’t recognize Heads Up as a salon whentheyfirstwalkin.OwnerBonnieEukelsaysthe boutique has an alluring atmosphere that invites people who don’t even have an appointment. We caught upwithBonnieandhere’swhatshehadtosayaboutHeadsUp...

What's Hot

For Hair!

Looking around, it’s easy to tell the salon does more than just hair. Talk about the boutique.

This is one aspect that sets us apart from other salons. We have a lot of great and unique girlfriend-like gifts that are awesome for events such as Mother’s Day, birthdays, or even for a

friendly get-together. They also make great last-minute gifts for

when you’re in a bind. You can browse while you wait for your appointment, it’s a very casual, friendly, and warm environment—you don’t need to be a client to browse our boutique.

FeathersTinsel Extensions

Page 45: FM Stride Magazine June

Tinsel Extensions

What are you doing that is trendy and popular right now?

Hair accessories! These are pretty big right now, especially after seeing Steven Tyler on American Idol. These are great for events like weddings and prom. We can tailor a number of different looks for special occasions. We do anything from feathers to tinsel. They add a splash of color that looks nice and it’s not obnoxious, so it won’t ruin your family picture.

Hair accessories? That soundslike it could get expensive.

No way! A strand of tinsel is only $4.It’sactuallya36inchstrandthat we fold over so it looks like you have multiple strands. To get a feather (like Steven Tyler) itisonly$8.Wehaveavarietyof colors for both the feathers and the tinsel. You don’t have to look obnoxious or over the top. A single feather or tinsel strand looks nice, and depending on how you wear your hair, you can

have a different look everyday with your accessories. It adds a nice splash of color to your hair

and it looks great too!

What is the deal with the Shellac Manicure?

This is huge! We offer upto70differentshades and it is applied like regular polish; however, once it is

on, it is hardened by placing your hand under a UV light. It lasts about two to three weeks and it is completely chip resistant. The average manicure only lasts about three days.A lot of times people have their nails done the night before an event, such as a wedding, and they’re in the next day for a touch up. There is no need for that with the Shellac. So don’t Shellac on your nails and come in to Heads Up!

What's Hot

for Nails!

What exactly is the FM Chamber of Commerce? The Chamber is a partnership of businesses, nonprofits, government and educational institutions in the Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo metropolitan region working together to make this the best place it can be. We focus on providing value and benefits to the business community, which in turn, enhances the quality of life for all of us. You recently merged withWest Fargo; can you tell us more about that? Businessesdon’tdrawgeographicboundaries around their customer-base. Combining the

two chambers, each with its own strengths and programming, has resulted in a stronger network and more opportunities for all members. It’s all about putting regional cooperation to work to make great things happen! Tell us about some of your resources for businesses? We have resources for everyone, from the one-person shop, to the largest corporations in town. Whether it’s start-up information, connecting a business leader

to elected officials or speaking on behalf of the business

community for pro-business legislation, we have you covered. Most members cite the networking and

marketing opportunities as top reasons for joining. We set the table for professionals to meet and support each other. What are some of your resources for the Community? We put together a beautiful Metro Profile each year chock full of pictures and statistics of the area. Many companies use it as a recruiting tool to bring new people in. We also publish a community calendar of events and a regional street map.

When you walk into this newly redesigned hotel off I-94 in Moorhead, you immediately feel the presence of a New York or Chicago like con-temporary - atmosphere. The front desks are situated as pods to al-low an interactive experience with the staff. And, if that’s not enough,
