According to a poll of British families in a survey carried out by www.raisingkids.co.uk, only one family in !ve eats together once a week or less. Even when families do eat together, three quarters of them watch TV at the same time. A survey conducted by BBC’s Newsround showed that 13% of children never eat together as a family – a worrying statistic which could be seriously detrimental to our children’s health and wellbeing.

It is doubtlessly di"cult in our modern lives to put time aside for every member of the family to sit together long enough to eat a meal. But there is strong evidence to show that children who regularly sit down to eat with the family achieve better GCSE grades than those who do not (according to a report by the Department for Children, Schools and Families).

Mark Elliot furniture, handmade in England, is speci!cally made with family life in mind. Mark Elliot designed his Macintosh chairs with a smooth curved back for supporting the spine, encouraging good posture to aid healthy digestion. The range even includes a gorgeous bench seat which kids love to sit on at dinner time.

“Having !ne handmade furniture in your home is a pleasure in itself, but the bene!ts that a great table can bring to your family go far beyond this” says Mark. “It’s not just about eating together” he continues “a much loved family table is at the centre of many good times and precious memo-ries.”

So does the furniture designer practise what he preaches? According to Mark their table is an evocative reminder of family life: “Our table is constantly in use be it for homework, enjoying a quiet read of the newspaper with a cup of co#ee, preparing family suppers or as a social hub for when friends come round.”

So what kind of dining/kitchen table is most conducive to getting the family together at meal times? “A round table is perfect for smaller families” continues Mark “as everyone is equal, preventing any sort of detrimental family pecking order. But if you have a larger family it is wise to go for an extendable rectangular table, such as our New England range, which can seat more people but yet still provide a lovely intimate atmosphere.”

Eating together at the table is also widely believed by nutrition experts to reduce obesity as it encourages slower eating. Family meal times also help children develop behavioural etiquette – simple things like how to handle their cutlery. More and more children are starting school without being taught how to hold a knife and fork properly!

Sitting down together as a family to enjoy a meal gives you time to laugh, talk and learn about each other’s lives. Although it is not always easy to organise, the bene!ts of doing so are well worth the e#ort.

Mark Elliot stores are found in Altrincham, Bishop’s Stortford, Bury St Edmunds, Cambridge, Chelten-ham, Holkham, Holt, Monmouth, Norwich, Snape Maltings, Southwold and Stamford.Or buy online at www.markelliot.co.uk

Research from leading Child Trust Fund provider, The Children’s Mutual, has identi!ed the rise of stay-at-home Dads. Families across the UK are experiencing a new trend as more dads are choosing to spend time at home looking after the children rather than work full-time.

Contrary to concerns of an allegedly worsening work/life balance in the UK, many fathers are electing to be at home either full or part-time, looking after their little ones and taking care of the house.

Following the birth of their children, a quarter (26 per cent) of dads decided to work part-time and nearly as many (24 per cent) started working "exibly. Fourteen per cent of dads chose to stop working outside the home altogether.

More than four in 10 (43 per cent) of these dads are responding to the current recession by spending even more time helping around the house, with only 27 per cent feeling that they now need to become more focused on earning money.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, stay-at-home dads spend the greatest amount of their time each week looking after the children (4 hours, 22 minutes) and cooking (3 hours, 50 minutes), as well as arranging the family !nances (3 hours, 45 minutes). And even though they have more time to be with their children than full-time working dads, stay-at-home dads wished they could spend a further hour a day with their children.

The Children’s Mutual’s research also looked at the idea of a traditional breadwinning dad versus a more modern domesticated dad. When asked to de!ne the characteristics of both, stay-at-home dads felt the top three responsibilities for each are:

Rank Traditional Dad: Modern Dad: 1 Main breadwinner Contributes towards childcare 2 Contributes to Contributes towards domestic tasks 3 In full-time Contributes to family !nances

The majority (40 per cent) said they were happy being a mix of traditional and modern dad, sharing both !nancial and domestic duties. They are as comfortable organising money matters as doing the washing up. Although nearly two thirds (65 per cent) said they are satis!ed with the role they play as stay-at-home dads, 53 per cent feel they face challenges and even prejudice for choosing this route.

David White, Chief Executive of The Children’s Mutual, said: “The changing role of dads within families is a positive step towards the greater recognition of what dads can and do contribute to family life. Dads play a vital role within their children’s lives and their homes, so it’s great to see these changing family dynamics.

“One of the most important roles for every dad is being a provider for his children, whether that’s as the main breadwinner or lead carer. Dads want to provide for their children now and will want to continue to do so as they grow up. One way dads can really help provide for their children is planning for the future and saving regularly over the long term. Contributing towards a Child Trust Fund is one of the ways dads can save for their children’s futures. By opening a Child Trust Fund early and saving regularly and encouraging friends and family to contribute too, dads can help to give their children a !nancial springboard into adulthood”.

Page 15: Flying Start Your Home

With the Association of Chief Police O!cers launching a nationwide campaign to raise awareness of the increased risk to women over this notorious party month, (police regularly record a huge increase of sex attacks over the festive season), Jacqui Hames, one of Britain's best-known real-life detectives, has o"ered some essential tips for women on keeping safe without spoiling their fun. Jacqui, who co-presented BBCs' Crimewatch for many years and spent 25 years with the Metropolitan Police, recommends the following eight steps for staying safe:

women can take control of their personal safety and have a sense of empowerment if confronted by a potential attacker. Women have no excuse not to buy one these days as personal alarms are now readily available on the High Street and are no longer the ‘ugly’ or bulky alarms of old. Many are of slick design and can even be chic accessories in their own right… and yet can be life saving.

morning or prior to a party, women should get in the habit of asking themselves the following questions:o Is my mobile phone fully charged and with plenty of credit?o Do I have my personal alarm attached to the outside of my handbag so it is on hand if needed?o Do I have enough spare cash to get a safe taxi home?

drinks (especially if in an unfamiliar place) work out how to get home BEFORE starting drinking.

Remember you’re far more vulnerable when you’re drunk - even a couple of drinks can make you take risks with your safety that you wouldn’t normally take.

of stashing a £10 or £20 note in a bra or shoe, so they will always be able to get home even if they lose their purse. Could be a lifeline if needed.

taxi with a registered badge.

Jacqui Hames advises, “All women should carry a personal alarm. Having it close at hand in case of a potential attack could be the di"erence between getting away safely or not. One of the best things a woman can do to prevent an attack if threatened is to set o" an alarm.”

And with major high street stores now selling personal alarms as stylish accessories, they are now considered to be a handbag essential and no longer a niche product only available from limited outlets. Jacqui points out, “Personal alarms used to be only available from specialist shops but now major retailers such as Marks & Spencer and Next stock stylish personal alarms such as the ila DUSK, signalling that they are increasingly seen as an essential accessory for women’s handbags.”

most e"ective alarm I have seen on the market because when activated it emits a piercing female shriek that is designed to disorientate an attacker, giving a woman precious seconds to get away. It is also really discreet and stylish so easy to tag onto a handbag or keyring.”

There has probably never been a better time to buy a new dishwasher. Track back as recently as 10 or 15 years ago and dishwashers were almost primitive compared to what we have today. It is worth recalling that the models of that not-so-distant era were electro-mechanical rather than electronic and equipped with little or no intelli-gence.

The dishwashers of the nineties expended far more water and energy, and the cleaning process was slower and not nearly so thorough. There were fewer programmes, less space and !exibility in the cavity, and no display panels to inform us of the machine’s progress.

ATAG’s new range of top class, fully integrated dishwashers is a superb example of the progress made. The new ATAG models have all the latest technological wizardry, but equally reassuring for

purchasers is the fact that they will be investing in a dishwasher whose robust construction and contemporary design are right at the top of the class. ATAG products are built to last.

The three new dishwashers are fully integrated and constructed of stainless steel, and comprise of the deluxe model VA9611TT (a market leading, 17 place settings with four wash baskets), the VA6611TT (16 place settings), and the VA6611PT (14 place settings). The dishwashers are designed to be fully integrated into the kitchen layout and as well as under a worktop can also be built into a tall housing unit.

ATAG is very much a thinking company and much thought has gone into the careful and precise design of these models. The dishwashers are made with room to spare from quality materials and there are many practical ways to arrange the

dishes, cutlery and delicate wine glasses. The most important parts are made from stainless steel (rather than plastic) and no other material is as durable for the purpose.

What is immediately apparent about the new ATAG dishwashers is their incredible quietness, thanks to such technology as the high quality sound-damping insulation material that is also used in luxury cars. All three models have a hidden, integrated electronic control panel with automatic programmes bringing signi!cant savings over the course of a year in terms of energy consumption, water and electricity. Less than 10 litres of water are required for one dishwashing cycle due to special sensors that detect the load and its dirt content. The fully automatic programme ensures that the right amount of water, as well as setting the correct temperature and the appropriate washing programme.

ATAG’s National Sales Manager, Graham Gleave says: “Those consumers who have been limping along with their old model will be astounded by the technology and quality of today’s dishwashers when they take that important decision to trade up.“Our new deluxe VA9611TT is an excellent example of modern technology in tandem with sleek, contemporary design. New and those replacing their dishwasher with an ATAG will notice at once the savings they make in energy and water.”

Do you have a baby on the way and need more space? Did working from home seem like a good idea, but the reality is di!erent? You or your partner either hog the spare bedroom or use the kitchen table as a desk. Do you want a playroom for the children? or maybe your mum would love to come and stay with you but the idea of trying to squeeze someone else into your home is alarming.

What are your options? You can sell your house and move on, a depressing thought in a slow moving housing market. How much time and e!ort will it cost to trade up?

You could look at an extension/loft conversion, or, you could move part of your life out into the garden.

Expanding your home into your garden is a realistic option. You can build a fantastic garden o"ce, granny annex or den for your growing family. Inside Out Buildings based in Lancashire have a solution for each situation and we are not talking about a pre-packed box or shed to plonk in your garden. We are talking about individually designed and built detached extensions in the garden.

Imagine working from home in a purpose built, highly insulated o"ce away form the rest of the family, or having friends to stay in a detached guest suite. You can even have a loo and shower installed, or how about a woodburning stove? This is one way to improve day to day life without the upheaval of moving.

“But I haven’t got time to organise this” you say. No problem. Everything is taken care of from day one. InsideOut Buildings design, project-manage and oversee the whole process. If you need planning permission, they make the application for you. They have the experience and knowledge to design garden rooms that blend into your existing lifestyle and they make the whole process as easy as possible.

InsideOut buildings are designed with the environment in mind. Their buildings keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter through careful use of breathable, eco-friendly insulation, not sweaty plastic insulation. Lighting is

energy e"cient. Building materials and wood is sourced within the UK. Nothing needs preserving or treating with chemicals. The running costs of your new building will be low. Your new building will make you look at your existing house to see how you can make energy saving changes.

Doors and windows are hand made and painted for your o"ce by a small specialist UK window Company that work closely with InsideOut. Double-glazing means you can work, sleep and relax without the irritating noise of the local dog or lawnmower disturbing you. Even better, at the end of the day you can just walk out, leave everything as it is, ready for the next day.

Kährs has launched its !rst exclusive range of wood "oors from the new Supreme Collection. Featuring a stunning traditional plank design, the new 20mm Oak Grande Collection is o#ered in dimensions previously not available in a modern multi-layered format. It includes a variety of styles and colour variations, for the most ambitious interior designs; all options are crafted from the !nest sustainable Oak, using modern eco-friendly methods, whilst also providing Kährs high performance. Introduc-tion of the new Avenue and Elegance ‘Supreme’ Collections will follow later in the year.

Striking both in scale and beauty, "oors from the Grande Collection measure 2800mm long by 260mm wide and have a thickness of 20mm. Eight di#erent !nishes span the colour spectrum, from blue/silver toned Grande Maison to ebony toned Grande Imperial, with each group receiving an individual surface treatment to enhance the timber’s grain and tactility. Bespoke methods

including handscraping, surface smoking, black/white washing and brushing are used in combination with a range of di#erent stains and natural oil treatments to create a collection of "oors which will lift any interior.

All "oors throughout the Collection feature an eco-friendly construction; crafted from sustainable Oak, Kährs original multi-layered construction uses hardwood down to the joint only, with fast-growing timber below. Whilst it can be refurbished in exactly the same way as a solid "oor, its criss-cross build has additional performance as well as eco bene!ts, including 75% greater stability. All "oors are also o#ered with a 30-year guarantee.

‘Helping people see clearly for over 40 years’

Wrights Opticians, 5 Chapel Brow, Leyland, PR25 3NHT: 01772 424296 w: www.wrightsopticians.co.uk

Page 31: Flying Start Your Home

Wright’s Opticians on Chapel Brown has been at the heart of Leyland for over 40 years. Wright’s o!er everything you would expect from a 21st century optical practice combined with good old fashioned personal service. Sarah Wright, Managing Director has been involved in the practice all of her life.

Sarah say’s, “My parents took over the opticians in 1977, we have been here ever since. My mother Sheila Wright, who is still a business partner, was one of the "rst women in the country to become

fully quali"ed in optics back in 1956. She trained me even before I went to university - it’s in my blood!”

When you enter this stylish practice, you will "nd Sarah ‘hands-on’ in every aspect as she works on all the "tting and dispensing of glasses. Sarah is also a quali"ed specialist in prescribing and "tting contact lenses.

Wright’s are on the Diabetic Retinal Screening and the Cataract Referral Fast Track lists for the Primary Care Trust. Sarah says, “We have two ophthalmic surgeons who have both run hospital clinics, which is very unusual for a high street practice. Anthony Levy FRCS does our testing, he is a highly experi-enced eye surgeon - you don’t need a second opinon! We also have Doctor Adebiyi who formerly ran the Cataracts Clinic in Wigan Eye In"rmary and who does diabetic screenings and also accompa-nies me on home visits.”

Another key team member is Colin Jackson who was initially trained by Sheila Wright and who also worked as a contact lens optician at Liverpool Eye Hospital and is now a fully quali"ed Optometrist.

Practice Manager Alison Greenhalgh and Recep-tionist Enid Finch complete the highly skilled, e#cient and personable workforce.

Sarah and the team often carry out home visits to patients who have di#culties travelling to the practice. Sarah explains “Home visits are invaluable for many elderly patients. It is an extension of our after-care service. We have treated many people throughout their whole lives - we know their case histories and they know and trust us. We do not charge any fees for call outs. The visits are person-ally rewarding as we help so many people.”

Wright’s also pride their professional "tting skills. Sarah says “If glasses are not "t correctly you could end up feeling sick or dizzy which could be dangerous, at the least they would be uncomfort-able and you wouldn’t want to wear them. The measurements, the skill and professional experi-ence of the person "tting them is so important. We move with the times, but I will never under-stand Internet Glasses, there are so many personal and lifestyle issues to consider - your vision is a primary sense, you can’t cut corners!”

Like all modern opticians Wright’s o!er the widest range of glasses, including NHS and free frames for children, budget frames through to leading designers. They are also the exclusive local stockists of Maui Jim’s prescription sunglasses which Sarah says are arguably the best sunglasses in the world, cutting out every scrape of glare.

Sarah’s vision is based on customer care, personal service, skills and experience.

KEY is a Charity that has been operating for the last 14 years. It works with young people who have housing issues. Two years ago KEY set up a family mediation project to try and prevent young people becoming homeless as a result of family disputes. KEY Mediation has now worked with over 70 families, helping them to live together in harmony.

Mediation helps families to speak together, without arguing, so that they can decide how things need to change for the future. The

Annie who is 18 recently used our service and says: “When I Came to KEY I had fallen out with my parent’s big style. I had been taking things without asking, falling out with my sister and not helping out around the house. I felt a lot of pressure as I had just started college and was struggling to keep up with my friends – and now that I was an adult I thought I could do what I want!

“Mediation helped me to talk to my parents about how I was feeling and what was happening. This helped me to feel more cared about and realise that my mum and dad were there for me. We are not arguing as much now and things are a lot better at home. If things had carried on I would have had to leave home.

“I would recommend KEY to anyone who is not getting along with their mum and dad, it has helped so much. They listened to what I felt and were extremely helpful and understanding to our needs as a family”.

Here are some quotes from other families that KEY Mediation have helped; “The help we received was very helpful, friendly and professional. Thank you for this great support when we had run out of ideas and couldn’t

“The mediations were very respectful and listened to our problems. Whilst we got input from them, they were not biased in any way”

“They were a perfect ‘go between’ when our troubles were at their worst and certainly calmed our situation down so that we could try and work out our problems”

KEY Mediation service is funded by the Lloyds TSB Foundation and Central Lancashire Primary Care Trust. All our mediators are trained volunteers.

If you think we could help you call us on 01772 623893 and ask to speak to Fran. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
