So You Want To Be An Airline PilotClimbing through the cloud at 6 miles per minute and bursting
out on-top into brilliant sunshine at 20,000 eet whilst the rest o
the world works beneath you is both a privilege and a pleasure
that only a pilot can truly enjoy on a regular basis.
Back down again towards the ground, handling a $120
million jet with 150 passengers on board, ying accurately on
instruments along a precise approach path, breaking through
the base o the cloud and landing saely on the runway in a 30-
knot gusting crosswind, is also a uniquely satisying experienceand one requiring a skill-set not possessed by all but which is
routinely demanded rom an airline pilot ying within Europe.
Many believe that one has to be born to love ying - and they
are not entirely wrong. However, more than anything, todays
proessional pilots are decision makers and bearers o heavy
responsibility who operate in a high-technology, ast changing,
and dynamic environment.
Airline pilots work within a complex system o electronic
equipment and computers, and are required to manag
and prioritise their own actions as well as maintain eectiv
communication with other crew members and teams on th
ground. More than anything else, they have to be highly capab
managers in a ascinating and highly unusual workplac
responsible every day or the saety and comort o a larg
number o people.
Once you have elt an airliner lit o into the air solely under yo
control, or you have watched the sun rising over the Alps roan altitude o 35,000 eet, you will never lose your passion
this challenging and stimulating vocation.

Airline Relationships
Ever since our very early relationships with both BEA and BOAC
in the 1960s, our Oxord Academy has enjoyed close and
positive relationships with an ever increasing range o airline
sponsors and employers.
Airline employers o low-hour pilots, (the industry term or newly
trained pilots), are understandably keen to employ the best.
They seek well-rounded individuals that have proven their ability
under training as those who will be able to y saely, reliably and
consistently with a solid oundation o skills immediately upon
joining their frst airline.
Such standards are by no means easy to achieve but they
ensure that it will only be necessary or the airline to urther
invest in the appropriate levels o multi pilot and jet training within
the airline to achieve the required operational standards.
Underpinned by the depth and quality o our training courses
the CAE Oxord Aviation Academy Oxord graduate has earned
an enviable reputation with airline employers as being a capable
and trainable individual representing minimal training risk and
essentially making CAE Oxord Aviation Academy a known and
reliable source o pilots or airlines worldwide.
Prior to 2001, many airlines sponsored and unded their own
selected trainee pilots to undertake training at CAE Oxord
Aviation Academy. Today, most ully unded airline schemes
have been replaced by new, mentored courses that are sel-
unded by an individual trainee pilot through either personal
unds or a special bank loan (see page 55).
CAE Oxord Aviation Academy works closely with airline
sponsors to gain a uller understanding o their evolving pilot
skill requirements so that the training courses we now provide
will produce graduates that match their current requirementsas closely as possible. It thereore ollows that a CAE Oxord
Aviation Academy graduate has one o the best possible
chances o securing that all-important frst ying job.

MPL Partner Airlines
CAE Oxord Aviation Academy is currently partnered with
Dragonair, easyJet, AirAsia and Flybe to train their uture First
Ofcers based upon the new Multi-Crew Pilot Licence (MPL).
These programmes are designed as airliner specifc operations
and incorporate not only the required competency based
ight training elements but include additional value-added
elements o training or the airline including commercial and
ground operations, saety and quality systems, environmental
considerations as well as an education in the customer service
ethos and airline corporate values.
Working in partnership with the airlines, we select and train
individuals to enter the pilot career by providing a ocused MPL
course and appropriate mentorship. The MPL course oers
an innovative and competency based approach to Multi-Crew

Our agship course takes students with little or no previous ying
experience to a rozen ATPL in approximately 16 months, rom
where they are then eligible to work as a First Ofcer with an
airline once specifc aircrat type training has been completed.
The complete course comprises proessional pilot training
leading to the issue o a European Commercial Pilots
Licence with a Multi-Engine Instrument Rating and MCC
certifcate combined with a Foundation Degree in Air Transport
Management.
Additional personal development is achieved through our
innovative SkillsPlus Programme.
Most airlines initially assign new First Ofcers to short haul eets
so they can rapidly build experience in the more demanding
departure, climb, descent, approach and landing phases o
ight.
Once you have gained 1,500 hours experience, your ATPL
becomes unrozen and you are then eligible to be considered
by your employer airline or promotion to Captain.

The modern airliner ight deck has changed signifcantly over
the past decade whereas the route to training airline pilots has
changed little rom the traditional route outlined in Annex 1 o the
Chicago Convention, 1948.
An ICAO study, commissioned in 2004, reviewed the regulations,
structure and methodology by which airline pilots were trained
and a new philosophy or better training and preparing pilots or
the modern Multi-Crew environment was born, in the orm o the
Multi-Crew Pilot Licence, in 2006.
Our MPL FIRST OFFICER course incorporates airline specifc
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) rom an early stage
in training and this requires an airline to mentor pre-selected
cadets through a bespoke course and into type, base and line
training on a specifc aircrat; taking about 18 months to achieve
licence issue, rom where line training and employment with the
mentoring airline commences.
Each MPL course is bespoke to a partner airline and designed

A career investment in airline pilot training is signifcant and

Airlines increasingly seek pilots who have a good understanding
o commercial aspects o airline operation and thereore can
oer the potential or wider managerial, training and support
roles as experience is accumulated.
It was with both these objectives in mind that OAA has
incorporated a Foundation Degree in Air Transport Management
into our Airline Pilot Career Programmes. Many o the studies
required in obtaining the FD are those already undertaken by
students as part o their ATPL theoretical training. Additional
degree subjects are delivered by our university partner,
Buckinghamshire New University and by our own instructors.
The FD is delivered at no extra cost3 to students enrolled upon
our Airline Pilot Career Programmes and represents a unique
and valuable added beneft o the course.
The bespoke programme provides students with the opportunity
to develop specialist knowledge, understanding and awareness
relating to operational and management matters aecting
both airlines and airports. This unique scheme enables our
students to gain more than just the pilots licence and opens up
opportunities or them to undertake urther study to achieve an
Honours or even a Masters degree ater graduation rom OAA
i so desired.
