From the Editor Aaron Bischoff

Welcome to issue 179 of the Flyer & Salvage. Thank you again to those who have called to say they are enjoying Flyer & Salvage. I hope everyone enjoyed the last issue in particular the cross word.

I was fortunate enough to attend our last meeting held at the Museum of Fire. It was great to see everyone there enjoying themselves, including our country members who made the long journey. A special mention for Glenn of the Fire Service MuseumVictoria who attended our meeting. Glenn extended an invitation for anyone visiting down south to call in and visit the museum at Eastern Hill. Not only was the weather great, the BBQ went down well too.

Thanks to Mark and the Museum of Fire for extending the invitation to host out last meeting and BBQ for the year. I’m sure everyone would agree, it is really a top class venue.

The day finished off with a visit to Ted’s place and a somewhat interesting journey back to Guy’s place in the White Knight.

I would like to welcome Chris Wallace to the HFEA. Chris recently purchased Ted Pike’s Bundaberg Fire Brigade Dennis F1. I’m sure Chris will enjoy many hours in the F1 just as I have with mine. And Chris, if you need a copy of the workshop manual, I have one.

As always, a big thank you to everyone who has sent in stories and photos. It makes it so much easier putting it all in place and this of course makes for a more interesting read. And of course, submissions of stories and photos are always appreciated. So if you would like something added to the Flyer and Salvage as a regular article, just let me know and I will do my best to add it to the next issue.

In each addition of the Flyer & Salvage, there is the “for sale and wanted pages”. Could members wishing to sell their appliances or other bits and pieces please attach a photo when sending the request through to me. This way others can see exactly what is for sale, which I’m sure would help with the sale.

And finally, I would like to wish everyone and their families a safe and enjoyable Christmas and a happy and prosperous new year.

Guy Ellis’s White Knight came down for the day

Two of our members, Stuart Collins and Neil Crawley, have recently acquired early International C1600 pumpers from the early 1970’s.

Stuart has written to say that he is about to embark on the restoration of his C1600, ME462. He is hoping to restore the appliance to its livery when it retired from service in the early 1980’s. He is looking for any information including history or old photos of this appliance.

Sadly, the aluminium ladder was relocated by others whilst in storage. If anyone has a 9mtr or an 11mtr ladder, please give Stuart a call.

Neil’s International has had a busy life since it retired from the NSW Fire Brigades. Having served with the Rural Fire Service at Liverpool where it responded to structure and motor vehicle incidents, it also featured in Graham Vatchers book.

Having been garaged for a number of years on the South Coast at the Eurobodalla Hot Fire Training Complex (still in service but not used) it is in quite good condition having been repainted since leaving the NSW Fire Brigades. Neil picked it up after it was recently decommissioned from the RFS.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

In the following issues of Flyer & Salvage, I will be adding some other old adverts and other flyers that manufacturers produced in days gone by. It gives a good look into the past on how things were done. I hope you all enjoy the historical flyers in particular the workshop manual flyers.

Neil Crawley has provided the material for this addition of blast from the past. Leyland were as popular as Dennis in their day and were used widely throughout England and were exported throughout the world. Neil has also added that if anyone is chasing up operating or workshop manuals for the Leylands, they can be obtained from the British Commercial Vehicle Museum.

In this issue we look at Leyland’s latest fire engines from a publication dating back to 1931 called “The Commercial Motor“.

One for the chocolate lovers!

I thought the next few pages might help those wanting to expand their fleet but may have a bit of a challenge convincing their better half. Having a bit of experience in this department, I thought I would share my secret. We all know how much our loved ones love their chocolate, so I thought why not use this to my advantage.

I need another fire engine I said to my wife. But before she had a chance to say no, Iquickly got the next bit in. Cadburys chocolate have one!

When it came time for another addition I mentioned that Rowntree’s have a Dennis.

So the next time they enjoy their piece of chocolate, don’t forget to slip into the conversation about the old fire engines that protected that little piece of chocolate.

Hang on tight! And you thought riding in the back of your old appliance was a bit scary. Spare a thought for this crew on board this appliance as they make their way to a call. Does anyone know the make or model of the fire engine?

Corrimal Fire BrigadeOpened in 1925, the Corrimal Fire Brigade still operates out of the same location. The station was recently expanded to allow for additional office space and amenities. The station is manned by Retained Fire Fighters. The following is a complete list of the appliances that they have had since the station was opened. Details provided by RFF Glen Boyd.

My new work toy!

I know it does not fall exactly into the old fire engine category but I can’t help but show off my new appliance at work. It is a Mercedes Atego which was built by SEM. It is a medium rescue body with a few modifications to meet out needs. It is equipped with an on board generator, first aid tank/high pressure pump, fire fighting and rescue gear plus our rail specific rescue trolleys and equipment.

Thinking of selling your fire engine?

How about giving thought to selling it to a current member of the HFEA. If you are unable to do this, suggest that the new owner becomes a member of the Association.

That way we keep it an active viable association dedicated to retaining the history of a very unique industry. Remember also to advertise it through our members first. We have over 70 members who are always keen to add to their collections

And if possible could you please add a photo or two of the appliance. This way people can see what they are possibly going to buy.

Flyer & Salvage is named after two of the firefighting appliances that operated from the City of Sydney Fire Station (traditionally known as Headquarters) in Castlereagh St, Sydney. During the early days of the Historic Fire Engine Association, meetings were held at Headquarters Fire Station, and were often interrupted by fire calls. Crews were called to their appliances over the public address system, and the call of “Flyer & Salvage” was the most common. The Flyer was one of three pumping appliances at Headquarters (the others being the Runner and the Second Call). It was the first appliance to leave the station on each fire call in the city area. It was crewed by an Officer and five firefighters, none of whom were allowed to leave the immediate area of the Flyer during their shift.The Salvage motor was designed and equipped to carry salvage and rescue gear not normally carried on firefighting appliances. Most Salvages have now been removed from their traditional homes at the District stations and redeployed at stations which have been allocated primary rescue responsibilities.
