Objective
The objective of this JIP is to join interested operators, contractors,engineering companies, drilling companies, authorities and other
groups or individuals in order to evaluate and agree on a guideline
for planning, design and execution horizontal directional drillings.
The main idea is to consolidate the knowledge and experiencesfrom several HDD projects worldwide in order to elaborate a
guideline for HDD projects intended to guarantee the quality of theproject and the success of the operation.
The final objective is to prepare a Guideline on HDD complying
not only traditional surface to surface crossings but also shore
approach crossings. This guideline will be confidential to the
sponsors for a limited period before it is updated and converted to
a DNV Recommended Practice on Horizontal Directional Drilling.
Outline Scope
The JIP will address the following aspects:
Design Basis: HDD design:
HDD Planning:
Project documentation:
Only steel pipelines will be covered.
JIP Technical Activities
As a minimum, the following aspects will be addressed.
Design Basis
The following areas shall be addressed:
Technical feasibility / Site investigation:o Pre-construction inspection;o Topographic and Hydrographic Considerations;o Data Acquisition;o Geophysical and geological data integration;
HDD design
The following areas shall be addressed:
Drill-Path Design;o Entry and Exit Angle / Length / Depth of Cover /
Design Radius of Curvature;
o Pilot hole / Tracking and Surveying;o
Reaming;
Pullback forces / design calculations;
Equipment and materials;o Machine Size Selection: pullback considerations, torque
and RPM considerations, pumping capacity, etc.;
o Drilling fluid issues;
o Down-hole equipment and tools: drill bit, reamers, pullhead, mud motors, specialized tools such as fishing
tools, etc
Steel casing (if applicable);
Pipeline issues:o Installation strategies: pipe string position related to the
pipe entry point and drilling axis of the crossing;
o Pipe stress criteria;o External coating requirements;o Cathodic protection;o On-bottom stability prior pullback for offshore
pipelines;
o Exit point issues for offshore pipelines (stability, free-
span, local scour);o Pipeline test prior and after pullback;
HDD Planning
The following areas shall be addressed:
Detail each step of the process;
Risk investigations and mitigations;
HDD Execution procedure;
Marine Operations for shore crossing HDD;
Contingency procedures;
HDD Project documentation:
The following areas shall be addressed:
Minimum documentation requirements and scope:o input and output data;o field readings;o as built reports, etc.;
Note that other relevant aspects not mentioned above may be
added to the scope of this JIP by suggestion and agreement
between participants.
