Antwerp commemorates the centenary of the First World War

From a historical perspective Antwerp has several reasons to commemorate the beginning of World War I in 2014.

As the National Rduit Antwerp briefly became the temporary capital of Belgium and home to the government,

parliament, the army, the royal family and diplomats. The imposing double belt of fortresses prompted a large

number of refugees to travel to the city. After the fall of Antwerp they mainly fled to the Netherlands, France and

Great Britain. The Peace Centre of the City and Province of Antwerp has joined forces with over fifty partners in

Belgium and abroad to put together an exciting cultural programme.
