About:

The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River in the United States in the state of Arizona. It is contained within and managed by Grand Canyon National Park, the Hualapai Tribal Nation, and the Havasupai Tribe. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of preservation of the Grand Canyon area, and visited it on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery. It is considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

The Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide and attains a depth of over a mile (6,000 feet or 1,800 meters). Nearly two billion years of the Earth's geological history has been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through layer after layer of rock while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted.

Time of Day

Because the heat isn't as severe, autumn flights on Grand Canyon helicopters are enjoyable at any time of the day. That being said, the air is calmer (less turbulent) and visibility is best at mid-morning.

Plan Ahead with Eagle Wings

Tours on Grand Canyon helicopters are amazingly popular. Seats are limited (choppers only hold six), and many air tours during the peak season (summer) sell out. Things change some for autumn flights. Fewer people come to the Park and there are more open seats. Bottom line: during the fall, you'll be more likely to get the tour you really want. Here's a word of caution, though: even though it's fall, you'll still want to plan ahead and book your tour well in advance.

If you are visiting Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon Skywalk is a must-see attraction. Tickets to the Glass Bridge average about $25 per person. However, depending on how you get to the Bridge, there are additional costs that you need to be aware. Here are the most common:

Parking Fee

Grand Canyon West is located 120 miles east of Las Vegas. The last 15 miles are over a rough, dirt road. High-clearance vehicles are recommended. There's a car park at the end of the road. Cost to park: $20
