IntroductionIn his work, Brett Coltman serves UBS Financial Services

as its Senior Vice President – Wealth Management from its Westport, Connecticut branch. In his spare time, Brett Coltman enjoys lake fishing and is a particular fan of the fly fishing technique. The following are a few pointers for those who are new to this type of fishing:

1. Learn how to wade while causing as little disruption as possible to the sediment under the water. Kicking up sand and gravel is a clear indication of your presence, which results in nearby fish getting spooked and swimming away, so take it slow and watch your step.

2. Your clothing can also have an effect on the fish so try to blend into the surroundings as much as possible. Avoid wearing bright or white clothing, sticking to earthy tones instead.

3. Head to faster water to achieve higher bite rates, since trout and other fish in fast-moving streams tend to spend less time examining the fly because they need to keep moving with the current. Quieter waters, conversely, offer them the time to swim around and more carefully consider the fly.
