The Wonder of the Words of Grace• And all were speaking well of Him, and wondering at the gracious words which

were falling from His lips Luke 4:22a• “Speaking well of Him” – an initial appreciation for Him

• Speaking, not “believing”

• “Wondering” – recurring theme• Luke 2:48; 4:31, 36; 5:9; 5:26• People are amazed by the events that are occurring

• Words of grace – the Gospel, the free offer of salvation through Christ• Acts 14:1-7 – signs granted, and they still did not believe

The Doubt of the People, vv. 22b-23• … and they were saying, “Is this not Joseph’s son?” Luke 4:22

• How could Joseph’s son teach like this? John 7:14-16• They thought Jesus was a sinner like everyone else, John 8:41

• And He said to them, “No doubt you will quote this proverb to Me, Luke 4:23• Jesus is omniscient, John 1:47-49; Lk 5:20-22; 6:8; 7:40; 9:47; 11:17• Proverb – (παραβολη parable): throw alongside, compare

• ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ Luke 4:23• Jewish literature (midrash): “Physician, heal your own limp”• Is this not Joseph’s son? The Messiah was to be a political leader (Luke 4:5-8), make a

grand entrance (Luke 4:9-12), Jesus would not perform miracles for Himself (4:1-4)

• “Whatever we heard was done at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.” Luke 4:23• Perform a sign for us, John 4:46-54; Luke 4:1-4

The Warning to the People, vv. 24-27• And He said, “Truly I say to you, no prophet is welcome in his hometown.

Luke 4:24• Truly (ἀμην amen) – Hebrew emeth: truth, faith, faithfulness• A “truth statement” is coming, listen up, pay attention, Luke 12:37; 18:17, 29; 21:32; 23:43

• “… no prophet is welcome in his hometown.”• Welcome, v. 24 = favorable, v. 19 (δεκτος)

• Connecting offer of the kingdom with being rejected

• Two examples from Israel’s history• But I say to you in truth… Luke 4:25 (ἀληθεια aletheia)

• Elijah, vv. 25-26• Sent to a Gentile woman after Israel had rejected God (1 Kings 17)

• Elisha, v. 27• Healed a Gentile when Israel was in rebellion (2 Kings 5:1-14)

The Warning to the People, vv. 24-27• Luke/Acts: An Account of the Gospel going out to the world

• Luke 24:45-49 – take the Gospel to the nations of the world• Acts 1:7-8 – take the Gospel to Jerusalem, Judea/Samaria, and to the remotest parts of the

world

• Israel rejected Jesus as their Christ• Matthew 12:24• Acts 13:38-47• Church is primarily Gentile

• Elijah will come before the day of the Lord, Malachi 4:5-6• John the Baptist could have been Elijah, Matthew 11:13-15• Elijah will come again, Revelation 11:1-13• All Israel will be saved when they call on the Lord, Luke 13:35; Romans 11:25-27

The Rejection of the People, vv. 28-30• And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these

things; and they got up and drove Him out of the city, and led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city had been built, in order to throw Him down the cliff. Luke 4:28-29

The Rejection of the People, vv. 28-30• And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these

things; and they got up and drove Him out of the city, and led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city had been built, in order to throw Him down the cliff. Luke 4:28-29• Satan attempts to take Jesus’ life before His time• Rage (θυμος thumos; usually = God’s wrath) proves the point of the historical lessons• Exactly as Jesus knew it would happen, Luke 11:45-52; 13:33-35; 20:9-19• A lesson for Believers – Luke 6:22-23

• But passing through their midst, He went His way. Luke 4:30• Miraculous avoidance of the hostile crowd• John 10:33-39

The Son of Man Comes to Town: Part 2

• The Wonder of the Words of Grace, v. 22a

• The Doubt of the People, v. 22b-23

• The Warning to the People, vv. 24-27

COMMUNION SUNDAYAnd when He had given thanks, He broke it and said,

“This is My body, which is for you, do this in remembrance of Me.”

In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup,

you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.1 Corinthians 11:24-27

There Is a Fountain #258

There is a fountain filled with blood drawn from Emmanuel’s veins,

And sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains.

Loose all their guilty stains, loose all their guilty stains.

And sinners plunged beneath that flood, loose all their guilty stains.
