Johnson-Fluiten ROTARY JOINTS:The strong link in your system
The experience acquired byFluiten as a mechanical sealmanufacturer has led to theconstruction of a wide range ofrotary joints for universal duties, for coolants, pneumatics andhydraulics.Besides the standard modelsdescribed in this catalogue, various special executions areavailable (i.e. full Stainless Steel
execution for food andpharmaceutical plants, withmore passages. etc.).The reliability of our jointsis a result of the quality ofthe materials, the precisionwith which we accomplishour operations, and thetesting of all the jointsbefore shipping.Technological
developments can lead, over time, to modifications.
For this reason, and for anyother kind of question notincluded in this catalogue, weask you to contact us.

Balanced seal:reduced friction torque
Wide range of seal rings materials for thebest performance with any product.Premium grade Graphite, ChromiumMolybdenum stainless steel, high qualitySilicon Carbide.
Wide range of gasket materials: NBR,Fluoroelastomer, Ethylene Propylene,Aflas.Perfluoroelastomer available on request
Springs not in contact with the product:no clogging and minimum head loss.
EXTERNAL SPRINGSFluids that are highly viscous or containsolid particles can produce clogging ofthe seal springs. Externally mountedseal springs which are not in contactwith the fluid make these joints suitableto operate with any type of fluid.
LOW FRICTION TORQUEThe balanced seal design minimizesvalues of friction torque at increasingpressure. The diagram on right shows, for all Rotary Joints sizes, measuredvalues of friction torque with water.
THE MECHANICAL SEAL: THE HEARTOF EVERY JOINTFluiten has been manifacturingmechanical seals for any kind ofapplications for 40 years, developingan extensive knowledge of all issuesrelated to the design and production ofmechanical seals.Fluiten has successfully challenged highpressures, sliding speeds of 10 m/sand more. The range of products dealt with goesfrom water, oil, and lubricants tofoodstuffs such as jam or honey, andpharmaceuticals such as injectablesand antibiotics, for which no emissionare required. The continuous growth of first installationseals sales highlights Fluiten’s successand is the best guarantee for ourcustomers.
In R type rotary joints, the seal substitution can be carried outwithout dismounting the joint from its application. This is possibleby means of our “Quick Replacement Device”. It is sufficient to removethe blocking screws (1) and separate the body to substitute the twoseal rings (2) and the O-rings. It is thus possible to quickly adaptthe joint to fluids requiring different sealing materials; in view of suchevent we have prepared replacements kits comprising two seal rings,O-ring gaskets and a series of springs.

Joint Type RB/RHB: Speed vs. Nominal Diameter Diagram
Type RHBCooling and pressurisation circuit(Hydraulic pack LHF)
Special design roller bearingssuitable for high temperature.Easy installation on rotary joint
Double balancing sealon process side
Seal on atmosphere side
Cooling fluid creates a barrieragainst the process temperature
Flanged connections accordingto DIN, ANSI or other standards Rotary joint housing in
special stainless steel
Thermal insulation toreduce energy losses
Joints type RB/RHB are designed to work atthe contemporaneous presence of temperaturesof 400C and high rotation speeds. Suchperformances can be reached by using two specialseals, with double balancing and with theinterposition of a pressurised fluid for the coolingof the primary seal. This fluid is circulated by a pumping and coolinggroup that continuously verifies the system’seffectiveness, and signals through visual andsound alarms, possible variations from the setvalues. The above results are reached by using ballbearings with closed loop oil cooling. Oil sealingis obtained by two double balanced seals thatguarantee the effectiveness of the system evenin case of an electrical failure.Double mechanical seals with pressurised barrierfluid avoid any leakage of the process fluid to theatmosphere; in a worst case event, the barrierfluid will leak into the process.Such double mechanical seal systems have beenmanufactured and installed in chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical applicationsby Fluiten since 1972.

CONNECTION
1. Use only flexible hoses for stationary part connection toavoid overloading of the roller bearings support.
2. Put the RJ housing in a clamp to tighten the fittings.
3. Use flexible hoses of adequate length in order to havegood flexibility.
4. Very long rotating syphon pipes can overload the rotaryjoint bushing.
5. Rotating syphons should have a good concentricity withthe joint rotational axis. For speeds higher than 1000 rpman additional bushing, made in PTFE or similar antifrictionmaterial, should be provided in the machinery.
6. Clean carefully the machinery lines connected with therotary joint.
7. In case of abrasive products the use of seal faces inhard materials (Silicon carbide vs. Tungsten carbide –Arrangement C) is recommended. Dry-running is not allowedwith this seal faces material combination.
8. For safety reasons it is recommended to shield theRotary Joint with suitable barriers to avoid that peoplecould be harmed by accidental dangerous emissions.
FRICTION TORQUEJOHNSON-FLUITEN Rotary joints have reduced frictiontorque (see also diagram on page 5); in any case suitableantirotation devices must be implemented to avoid rotationof the stationary part.• For sizes up to R050 flexible hoses generally give asufficient reaction.• For larger sizes the use of the antirotation pin (see pages8 & 9) is recommended.
SPARE PARTSFor all sizes a spare parts kit is available. Each kit consists of:• Stationary and rotary rings• Secondary seals (O-Rings)• SpringsNOTE: For sizes R009 & R012 the entire rotor must bereplaced
NOTEAvoid using the rotary joints in conditions in which pressure, speed and temperature are simultaneously near to themax. allowed values. For high duty operating conditions a correct selection ofseal materials is recommended. In doubt, please contactJOHNSON-FLUITEN.Seal faces are lapped with a planarity of two optical fringes(monocromatic light method).QRD system (see page 5) gives the possibility to checkseal element conditions facilitating the maintenance schedule.Rotary joints up to R050 size have pre-lubricated rollerbearings which do not require relubrication.Rotary joints RH version, recommended for temperatureshigher than 100C, have roller bearing of special designfor high temperatures and require periodic relubrication(grease with drip point at 250C or higher, SILEX PLS.2or equivalent). For this operation a lubricator is provided on joint support. For sizes larger than R050 a lubricator is always provided.
