VACCINE INFORMATION STATEMENT

Influenza Vaccine Wha t You Need to Know

( __ 1__.__W_h_y~ge_t_v_a_c_c_in_a_t_ed_?_·~~~~) Influenza ("flu") is a contag ious disease that spreads around the United States every winter, usually between

October and May.

Flu is caused by influenza v iruses , and is spread mainly by coughing, sneezing, and close contac t.

Anyone can get flu, but the risk of getting flu is highest among children. Symptoms come on suddenly and may last several days. They can include: • fever/c hills • sore throat • muscle aches • fat igue • cough • headache • runny or stuffy nose

Flu ca n make some peopl e much sicker than others. These peop le includ e young children, people 65 and older, pregnant women, and people w ith certa in hea lth conditions - such as heart, lung or kidney di sease, nervous system disorders, or a weakened immune system. Flu vaccinati on is especiall y important fo r these people, and anyone in close contact w ith them.

Flu can also lead to pneumonia, and make existing medical conditions worse . It can cause diarrhea and

seizures in children.

Each yea r thousands of people in th e United States die from flu , and many more are hospita li zed.

Flu vaccine is the bes t protec tion aga inst flu and its compli ca tions. Flu vacc ine also helps prevent spreading flu fro m person to person.

2 Inactivated and recombinant f lu vaccines

You are gett ing an inj ecta bl e fl u vacc ine, which is either an " in activa ted" or " r ecombinant" vacc ine. T hese vacc ines do not conta in any li ve infl uenza viru s. They are g iven by inj ection w ith a need le, and often ca ll ed the "flu sho t. "

A differen t, li ve , a ttenu ated (weak ened) infl uenza vacc ine is sprayed into the nostrils. Th is vaccine is described in a separate Vacc in e Jn(o n11atio11 State111 e11t .

Flu vaccination is recommended every year. Some children 6 months tlu-ough 8 years of age might need two closes during one year.

Flu viruses are always changing. Each year 's flu vaccine is made to protect against 3 or 4 viruses that are likely to cause disease that year. Flu vaccine cannot prevent all cases of flu , but it is the best defense against the disease.

It takes about 2 weeks for protection to deve lop after the vaccination, and protection lasts several months to a year.

Some illnesses that are not caused by influenza virus are often mistaken fo r flu. Flu vaccine will not prevent these illnesses . It can only prevent influenza.

Some inacti vated flu vaccine contains a very small amount of a mercury-based preservati ve called thimerosal. Studies have shown that thimerosal in vacc ines is not harmful , but flu vacc ines that do not contain a preservative are ava ilable .

3 Some people should not get this vaccine

Tell the person w ho g ives you the vacc ine: • If you have any severe, life-threatening allergies. If

you ever had a life-threatening allergic reaction after a dose of flu vaccine, or have a severe allergy to any part of this vaccine, including (for example) an allergy to gelatin, antibiotics, or eggs, you may be advised not to get vacc inated . Most, bu t not all , types of flu vaccine contain a small amount of egg prote in.

• If you ever had Guillain-Barre Syndrome (a severe para lyz ing illness, a lso called GB S). Some peopl e w ith a hi story of GBS should not get thi s vacc ine. This should be discussed with your doctor.

• If you a r e not feelin g well. It is usua lly okay to get flu vacc ine w hen you have a mild illness , bu t you might be advised to wa it until you fee l bette r. You should come back when you are better.

('-_4__.__R_is_k_s_o_f_a_v_a_c_c_i_n_e_r_e_a_c_t_io_n __ J With a vaccine, li ke any medicine, there is a chance of s ide effects . T hese are usually mild and go away on thei r own.

Problems that could happen after any vaccine: • Brief faint ing spe lls can happen after any medical

procedure, including vacc ination. Sitting or ly ing down for about 15 minutes can help prevent fai nting, and injuries caused by a fall. Tell you r doctor if you fee l dizzy, or have vision changes or ringing in the ears.

• Severe shou lder pain and reduced range of motion in the arm where a shot was given can happen , very rare ly, after a vacc in ation.

• Severe a ll ergic reactions from a vacc ine are very rare, estimated at less than l in a million doses. If one were to occur, it would usually be within a few minutes to a few hours after the vaccination.

Mild problems following inactivated flu vaccine: • soreness, redness, or swe lling where the shot was

given • hoarseness • sore, red or itchy eyes • cough • fever • aches • headache • itching • fatigue

If these prob lems occur, they usually begin soon after the shot and last I or 2 days.

Moderate problems fo llowing inactivated flu vacc ine: • Young ch ildren who get inactivated flu vaccine and

pneumococcal vaccine (PCV 13) at the same time may be at increased ri sk for seizures caused by fever. Ask your doctor for more information. Tell your doctor if a child who is gett ing flu vaccine has ever had a seizure.

Inactivated flu vaccine does not contai n li ve flu v irus, so you cannot get the flu from this vaccine .

As with any medicine, there is a very remote chance of a vaccine causing a serious injury or death.

The safely of vacc in es is always bein g monitored. For more information, visit: www.cdc.gov/vaccinesafety/

5 What if there is a serious reaction?

What should I look for? • Look for anything that concerns you, such as signs of

a severe allergic reaction, very high fever, or behavior changes.

Signs of a severe allergic reaction can inc lude hives , swelling of the face and throat, difficulty breathing, a fast heartbeat, dizziness, and wealrness. These would start a few minutes to a few hours after the vaccination.

What should I do? • If you think it is a severe allergic reaction or other

emergency that can' t wait, ca ll 9- 1-1 and get the person to the nearest hospital. Otherwise, call your doctor.

• Afterward, the reaction should be reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). Your doctor should file this report, or you can do it yo urself through the VAERS web site at www.vaers.hhs.gov, or by ca lling 1-800-822-7967.

VAERS do es nol give medical advice.

6 The National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program

The Nationa l Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP) is a federa l program that was created to compensate peop le who may have been injured by certa in vaccines.

Persons who believe they may have been injured by a vacc ine can learn abou t the program and about filing a claim by ca lling 1-800-338-2382 or visiting the VICP website at www.hrsa .gov/vaccinecompensation. T here is a time limit to file a claim for compensation .
