Getting Started

PARENT COMPANY COMPETITION

Giant Eagle has its talons firmly wrapped around parts of Pennsylvania and Ohio. The grocery chain, a market leader in Pittsburgh and eastern Ohio, operates about 170 company-owned stores and some 60 franchised supermarkets, as well as about 160 GetGo convenience stores (which feature fresh foods and sell gas at discounted prices through the fuelperks! program). Many Giant Eagle stores feature video rental, banking, photo processing, dry cleaning services, and ready-to-eat meals.

INSPIRATION

Page 5: Flour Child

We've got all the ingredients out and the sweet smell of the brown sugar is combining with the powdery aroma of the flour, creating a midair fragrant collision that's teasing my senses. The measuring cups are scattered across the counter while the oven is quietly waiting for it's time to shine. Mom is going over her list as she meticulously measures out the right ingredients that grandma taught her when she was my age.

I can almost taste those cookies already.

She won't notice if I actually taste them though, well, the dough that is. I'll just dip my finger into this delightful gooey mixture. Only once, of course… Okay, that was good. Just one more. Drat, she's looking now. That's probably enough, I should help put the dough out on this sheet.

I'm going to place these on here perfectly, they'll come out as perfect circles. Then when I split them apart and the chocolate chips try their hardest to stay together by creating little chocolatey rope bridges that eventually will give away, mom can have half and I can have half.

I can almost taste those cookies already.

As mom lets me put on the oven mitt and help her slide the tray in the middle rack I can feel the heat race up my skin and to my face, and I shut the door as fast as I can. Then this is the part I hate. The waiting game. 10 to 15 minutes of pure torture, the smell of the baking dough sneaking through the top of the stove finding it's way to my nose. Mom knows how miserable this makes me, it's like she does this on purpose for all the times I won't go to bed on time.

What's this?! The mixing spoon, for me? Is this a trap, mom? If so it is a delicious trap and I couldn't care less about what's in the oven. That's a lie.

I can almost taste those cookies already.
