    Note:  The unemployment and  job growth rates are estimates, which are primarily based on surveys created and 

    mandated by the U.S. Bureau of  Labor Statistics in cooperation with the Florida Department of  Economic Opportunity. 

    The unemployment rate is derived from Florida household surveys conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau under contract 

    with the U.S. Bureau of  Labor Statistics.  The  job growth rate is derived from Florida employer surveys conducted by the 

    U.S. Bureau of  Labor Statistics. 

    Both estimates are revised on a monthly basis.  In addition, these estimates are benchmarked (revised) annually based 

    on actual counts from Florida's Reemployment Assistance tax records and other data.

    Florida’s Nonagricultural Employment by Industry (Seasonally Adjusted) 

      The  number  of   jobs  in  Florida was  8,150,200  in October  2015,  up  239,900  jobs  compared  to  a  year  ago. 

    October 2015 was the 63rd consecutive month with positive annual  job growth after the state lost  jobs for over 

    three years.  The  industry gaining  the most  jobs was professional and business  services  (+49,700  jobs, +4.2 

    percent). 

      Other  industries  gaining  jobs  included  leisure  and  hospitality  (+49,100  jobs,  +4.4  percent);  education  and 

    health services (+48,400  jobs, +4.1 percent); trade, transportation, and utilities  (+45,300  jobs, +2.8 percent); 

    construction  (+18,700  jobs,  +4.6  percent);  other  services  (+14,500  jobs,  +4.4  percent);  financial  activities 

    (+13,900  jobs, +2.6 percent); and manufacturing (+5,000  jobs, +1.5 percent). 

      The industries that lost  jobs over the year were information (‐100  jobs, ‐0.1 percent) and government (‐4,300 

     jobs, ‐0.4

     percent).

     

    Local Area Unemployment Statistics (Not Seasonally Adjusted) 

     

    In October 2015, Monroe County had  the  state’s  lowest unemployment  rate  (3.4 percent),  followed by St. 

    Johns County (3.6 percent) and Alachua and Okaloosa counties (4.2 percent each). 

      Hendry  County  had  the  highest  unemployment  rate  (9.4  percent)  in  Florida  in October  2015,  followed  by 

    Hardee County

     (7.9

     percent)

     and

     Highlands

     and

     Putnam

     counties

     (6.9

     percent

     each).

     No

     county

     had

     a double

    digit unemployment rate for October. 

    Area Nonagricultural Employment (Not Seasonally Adjusted) 

      All  twenty‐four metro areas  in  the  state had over‐the‐year  job  gains  in October 2015.  The  areas with  the 

    largest gains were Orlando‐Kissimmee‐Sanford (+43,000  jobs, +3.8 percent), Tampa‐St. Petersburg‐Clearwater 

    (+37,100  jobs, +3.0 percent), and Ft. Lauderdale‐Pompano Beach‐Deerfield Beach (+26,100  jobs, +3.3 percent).
