Walesca Marrero is a new

Susan Woodford

Ms. Woodford has been seen

as a pioneer in field of

prevention for the state of

Florida. For the past ten years

Ms. Woodford has grown the

Nassau Alcohol Crime and

Drug Abatement Coalition

from a group of concerned

citizens to one of the top

coalitions in the state. As a

result of the coalition’s efforts

Nassau County has seen a

huge shift in its community

norms related to youth

substance use, a decrease in

juvenile use and related

crimes and an increase in

community stakeholder

collaboration as it relates to

prevention efforts.

Lina Castellanos

Ms. Castellanos has

continuously worked on

bringing prevention activities

into the spotlight while

recognizing the importance of

evaluation and data to

document the effective work

the providers are doing in our

communities. She consistently

champions on behalf of the

providers and serves as their

ally and liaison between

quality improvement, funding

requirements, and meaningful

services to those most in need

in South Florida.

PREVENTION AWARD

Success (PFS) grant. Walesca

was the Executive Director of

Taylor County Collaborative

Family Resource Network in

West Virginia. She has extensive

experience with coalition

development, community

partnership building, and youth

development.

Amanda Muller is the newest

member of the Clinical Team

within SAMH. For the past five

years, Amanda has worked with

community-based organizations

in Florida and North Carolina.

Most recently, Amanda worked

in the HIV Prevention Program

at the Florida Department of

Health.

Managing Entity News

Central Florida Behavioral Health Network, Inc.

With the increase in additional

prevention funds, CFBHN is

working to address concerns in

Manatee and Sarasota counties

for the increase usage of

Narcan. Additionally, new

providers with additional

services have come on board to

expand the region’s system of

care.

Training Events and Conferences CAPT Online Training: CAPT is one of SAMHSA’s training arms that provides national training and technical assistance to strengthen the behavioral health workforce. This website contains a collection of web-based training materials for practitioners interested in planning, implementing, and evaluating effective efforts to prevent substance use and misuse. Meeting and Recognition luncheon, highlighting the great work of their community members.

Drug Free Manatee recognized the acomplishments of their county’s young people for their great work by hosting a Youth Talent Show in January. The event featured student original work submissions and musical talent of ITunes sensation Matt Walden, courtesy of the Del Couch Music Education Foundation. State Goal – Data-based Decision Making: To ensure data is utilized in a purposeful and meaningful way to make decisions. FYSAS: Exciting news is coming for prevention stakeholders! Starting this July, data from the Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey as well as the Florida Youth Tobacco Survey will be available through a searchable electronic data system. Users will have the ability to look at key questions from both surveys and filter responses by grade level, gender, age, and other variables. For additional questions, please contact Ashley Schwab.

PBPS: SAMH has been working with Collaborative Planning Group Systems, Inc. (CPGS) to create a statewide data system to capture prevention efforts across the state. This system will ensure consistency in data collection and reporting to allow for valuable data for the State, the regions, and the prevention providers and coalitions. The reporting feature built into the system allows users to view real-time data in a number of ways and filtered by indicators such as funding source, problem area, staff, and others. For additional information, please contact your Managing Entity. Epi Trends: From “flakka” to fentanyl and from hydrocodone to heroin, Florida is experiencing rapid changes in substance abuse. In a recent state report, data showed heroin deaths in Florida have increased almost 8 fold between 2011 and 2014. Understanding the current state and local needs is critical in planning effective prevention strategies. For more information about recent drug trends, please see the Florida 2016 Substance Use Trends Data Report.

Expanding the Prevention Reach DACCO has

reported their relationship with the schools continues to thrive, allowing them to expand services to 29 Hillsborough County Public Schools ranging in age from Elementary through High School.

Youth & Family Alternatives has been able to take The Caring School Community (CSC) which began in 3 Pasco County Elementary Schools to expand into an additional 3 schools. They have found that the schools implementing CSC have declined in bullying, declined in disciplines, and increased in positive behaviors!

Hernando County Community Anti Drug Coalition (HCCADC) HCCADC was named a “Coalition of Excellence” by Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA), the nation’s leading substance abuse prevention organization. The coalition received the Coalition of the Year award for their success in addressing alcohol, tobacco, and prescription drug among middle and high school students in Hernando County.

Youth Haven has doubled the number of children served for the fiscal year and is getting into additional schools and organizations.

Centerstone received the Partnership for Prevention Grant for the second time! They have also reported securing additional funding to address adult prevention strategies in their community.

Collaboration Done Right

Hillsborough County Anti Drug Alliance (HCADA), MADD, Mendez Foundation, Phoenix House, and the Hillsborough County Sheriffs’ Office were able to collaborate to provide curriculum to every middle and high school School Resource Officer in the County (87 prevention tool kits). Additionally, HCADA is working with the Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force, USF College of Pharmacy, and local doctors to provide education at area hospitals to the medical

community on safe prescribing practices for pain medication, how to recognize addiction or drug seeking behaviors, and how to use the PDMP. Lee County Coalition for a Drug-Free Southwest Florida and Drug Free Collier have teamed up to create a PSA to help prevent underage drinking as part of the #refuse campaign. Television spots aired in the Fort Myers/Naples DMA from December 18th through December 31st calling for responsible adult holiday parties. The PSA encourages adults to be careful and responsible when hosting parties and limit temptations that can lead to poor decisions.

Commission on Substance Abuse was recently awarded the Non-Profit Organization of the Year for Collaboration at 6th Annual South Florida Community Care Network Non-Profit Awards presented by 2-1-1 Broward for its work in addressing the Flakka epidemic in Broward County. In addition, the Commission was selected by CADCA (Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America) to present at the 26th Annual Leadership Forum in Washington, DC. The presentations included "Bringing the Community Together with Practical and Effective Approach to Implementing SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment)" and "Flakka - Lessons from Ground Zero."

responsibilities as citizens.

Pasco County Alliance for

Substance Abuse Prevention,

BayCare Behavioral Health, and

Digital Lightbridge partnered

with RenewPasco and the Pasco

Sheriff’s Office to host the

Narcotics Overdose Prevention

and Education (NOPE) Vigil. The

event began with exhibits of

local resources and a wall of

pictures to memorialize the

lives lost to overdose.

PFS: The Partnership for

Success grant is working with

seven communities addressing

underage drinking including

Duval, Orange, Pinellas, Palm

Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade

and Hillsborough County.

Duval Highlight: To date, a total

of 1,013 individuals have been

trained across the 6 Center for

Substance Abuse Prevention

(CSAP) strategies focusing on

parent engagement, merchant

training, and SBIRT.

Park Scarecrow Festival take

"selfies". Over the two weeks

of the Scarecrow Festival, an

estimated 114,000 people

visited the Coalition's display

with its #refuse prevention

message.
