813-908-1960The Runner’s Running Store

Whether we want to achieve something, or buy something or just be something, we strive to

make it the best. Being the best is a term relative to the time, the place and the person.

Getting the best running shoes in many stores does not mean buying the most expensive model they sell and then you assume you are getting the best shoe for your feet. Getting the right fit and shoe type generally will give you the most for you money. Getting the best price for a shoe does not always work because it could be the wrong shoe for your feet and promote injury. Price does not dictate what is best for your foot. Remember as time goes on your feet get flatter and longer so your size and width can change Go to a running specialty store that has the most experienced salespeople and have them do a gait analysis on your feet, to check pronation and supination, rotation of your ankles and alignment of your knees. These experienced salespeople, who should be runners, understand the features and benefits of each model of shoe and therefore will match the shoe and the needs of your feet.

Running your best does not mean breaking a

personal record every time you run. To run your best, you have to vary your running and add some additional flexibility workouts. To run better you have to run more. More may mean adding a speed workout, a tempo run and a long easy run. Easy running may mean long workouts where you run and walk for extended periods of time to build your heart aerobically. Running your best may also mean just running on a regular basis at a pace that is comfortable to you to maintain an adequate fitness level. I believe most of us want the best for our bodies and to do that in a beneficial way you have to engage in some type of athletic or aerobic activity involving a lot of movement. The type of movement that works best for you is the activity that you will continue to do on a regular basis.

To exercise regularly you need to take the best care of your feet. We have already discussed footwear but there are a lot of accessory items available that will help your feet stay strong and healthy. Moisture management socks will help prevent blisters and provide long lasting breathable comfort for your feet in any type of athletic footwear. If you have major structural issues with your feet, you need a functional orthotic custom fitted by a podiatrist. Most people can use an accommodative orthotic which can be very supportive. You should try on any shoes you plan to buy with your orthotics to make sure they work together properly. If you are on hard surfaces and don’t need a lot of support get a cushioned insert which will help the shoe absorb the shock from running. If your heals are sore, try putting a thin wedge under your insert to shorten your foot strike. If you have plantar fasciitis, stabilize your foot with supportive inserts and soak your feet in cold water after exercising.

We all treat our bodies as we see fit but make sure you do your research and consult professioanls to do the best with the only body you have.

MINIMAL RUNNING SHOES QUICKLY EVOLVING Gene Ulishney, BS HPE, LMT, CPED It began with a book and a water shoe with toes and no cushioning. It seemed a perfect marriage. About as natural as it gets – barefoot but with some protection from unforeseen sharp objects. Perfect…right? Just like man originally did it. Problem is, something changed underneath us. Our new “natural” surface is now flat and bone-jarring, not undulating and soft. It is said that modern man has walked the earth for 50,000 years. Yes, the earth – undulating and soft. And we believe that we can evolve quickly enough, say, in the last 100 years or so, to perfectly adapt to our new flat and bone-jarring surfaces? Man, we are good - or, maybe not. In an effort to get back to “natural” we forgot about a few things along the way. Like, about how the foot has actually been working for more than 50,000 years. And, about how the bare earth aids in helping us with shock absorption. Some of the first to really take a look at how we can help the body adapt to our new surfaces have been the running shoe manufacturers. And it has only been seriously undertaken in the last 35 years or so. Common sense said that we needed something underneath our feet to help absorb shock. So, everyone began adding thicker and softer materials in their shoes – and more of it under the heel, where all of the runner’s weight seemed to be coming down. But that wasn’t enough. Feet began to move in ways that looked kind of weird. And things began to hurt after a while. So, shoe companies began to add things to shoes to try to limit those weird motions. Some made things worse, but others seemed to help, somewhat, and some more than others. We have recently taken a short step back with all of the excitement of this “natural” movement of doing things with toes, and no, or very little cushioning. Just ask doctors and physical therapists who deal with runners in pain. It looks to be sorting itself out, though. I don’t believe any reasonable person will continue to wear things that continue to cause them pain. And, time tells. For as many as have been sold, very few are on the road. But, there seems to be a couple of positives that this movement has brought to the forefront - reasonably lower heels and forefoot flexibility. Biomechanics and gait analysis are showing a bright future for these topics. Now, just add the right amount of cushioning and we’re off to the races - for the segment of the running population choosing more “feel” in their run. For the rest of us who want a soft and comfortable ride, conventional running shoes are still the shoes choice. As Brooks puts it, “float” or “feel”, it’s your choice…or maybe a little of both.

Winding down of season, USAT release of deaths in

triathlon study, Lance Armstrong, and other musings

By the time this is read, almost all of you will be evaluating your 2012 race season; and, hopefully, doing some rest and rehab. It was again a hugely busy season here in Florida. We continue to be the Rock Star state for multisport. Just around the corner the beginning of February will be the Chilly Willy Duathlon at Ft. Desoto Park. Mark your calendars and register now; this is one of the largest duathlons in the country, and will be a good start up test of where you are and where you need to go with your race training.

USATriathlon has released its “blue ribbon” panel’s initial results of studying the troubling increase in deaths in our sport, most of which occur in the water. Un-fortunately, there has been no “magic Bullet” found to cure this phenomena. It appears that many times there is a sudden onset cardiac event that occurs, most frequently in middle aged men, many of whom are quite experienced triathletes, not untrained neophytes. In one recent case, the athlete who died was called by his training partner the healthiest person he had ever known. Suggestion: it’s worth it to you and your family to obtain a cardiac stress test with whatever your doctor recommends in the way of frequency of testing to attempt to minimize your risk.

Most of us have been saddened by the recent overwhelming documentation regard-ing Lance Armstrong. I’ve have been a defender of his for years; but when George Hincapie, his closest friend and lieutenant on every one of Lance’s tour victories testified under oath to the doping, I was crushed. It seems that nearly every top cyclist of that era was doping. This is not said as an excuse; but, rather, as a further indictment. If the other top athletes in this sport were all doing it, to me, it’s that more far fetched to accept that Lance could continue to be that much better clean. It’s always sad to lose an icon; especially, as in this case, one who did so much for cancer research.

I end my tenure as the Florida Region representative at the end of this year, after serving on the national Board of Directors for USATriathlon for the past seven years. It’s been an honor serving all of the multisport athletes from the Florida Region on the National Board. I’ll still be visible and active announcing various Florida races, and maybe even get a chance to participate again. Thanks for allow-ing me to serve you on the Board. See you at the races in 2013.

Brian Harrington, Race Announcer, Immediate Past President, Current board member, USAT Representing the Florida Region

Brian is a practicing attorney, specializing in

personal injury cases with a subspecialty

representing cyclists in bike/auto accidents. He is

a lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, and has been active, as both a

participant and race man-ager for twenty six years.

He has worked on all phases of race

production, including being one of the early race directors of St. Anthony’s

Triathlon; announces many races on the West Coast of Florida, and currently

serves on the national Board of Directors for USA

Triathlon as the Florida Region Representative,

holding the office of President of the Board. He has two daughters

(Shana Harrington and Brianne Gaal), two son’s in

law (Scott Lowery and Marty Gaal) , and one

granddaughter (Haileigh Houser) who are active

triathletes. He brings this experience to our races as

our race announcer.

ome triathletes scoff at obstacle racing since there’s little or no swimming involved and because some participants walk much of the course. Those accustomed to running on hard

surfaces wonder why anyone willingly would run through mud and muck, let alone put obstacles in their paths.

But if you do a little obstacle training and racing, you might find your triathlon and road running times improv-ing dramatically. Here are a few reasons you might want to consider getting dirty:

TRANSITION TIMES: One of the toughest things about triathlon is transitioning between the swim and the bike and the bike and the run. It’s not just a matter of efficiently changing gears but also catching your breath, getting your legs to adjust, and maintaining speed. Even the best triathletes struggle with transition at times, especially running the first half mile after the bike when your legs feel like cement.

Still, that’s only two transitions. Obstacle races have two dozen running-obstacle-running transitions. Sure, the transitions are more modest, but there’s a lot more of them. Obstacle races are won by people who clear challenges and regain their speed im-mediately. Do enough of those and triathlon transitions seem a lot easier.

GO OFF-ROAD: After doing a lot of obstacle races, it no longer will bother you to run a mile or more in sand, which often is a requirement in Central Florida triathlons. In fact, it feels easier not having to stop and deal with an obstacle every couple hundred yards.

During triathlons you’ll often get passed on the run by people who appear to have fresh legs. Some of them do, since they’re competing as part of relay teams. But don’t be surprised if after obstacle training you pass a few people with “R” on their right calves. Part of that is conditioning from obstacle race transitions. The rest has to do with interval training and obstacle-specific work.

INTERVAL TRAINING: It’s no secret that interval training, alternating between hard bursts of effort and lighter recovery periods, is the most effective way to get faster. But runners and

triathletes often fall into a lull of training long and slow. But obstacle races encourage interval training. Traditional running intervals are effective (i.e. two minutes running hard, two min-utes walking or jogging, etc.) but what really works is alternating between strength moves and running.

CROSSFIT (PLUS RUNNING) National obstacle race series like Tough Mudder and Spartan Race have aligned themselves closely with CrossFit. The one shortcoming with CrossFit is that there’s not much running involved. CrossFitters often cruise through obstacles at races but move slowly between the chal-lenges. (Of course, a lot of runners and triathletes race through the course but struggle with the obstacles.)

But if you can alternate between strength/core moves and run-ning, as the folks at the CrossFit gym TNL Tampa do on Satur-day Mornings, you will have an effective program to thrive in obstacle races. Eric Stratman, the owner of TNL Tampa, says he jumps in an occasional triathlon and does reasonably well despite not training like a triathlete. If you want to be a faster triathlete, cut down the hours on the bike, swim, and run and just train for a few obstacle races.
