LIVING LABORATORY

At FGCU, your studies will immerse you in your chosen field. You will also gain insight through hands-on experience and maybe even contribute to important research. Our campus – and the surrounding community – serve as a living lab for learning and scholarship.

Your success – academic, personal and professional – is our top priority. FGCU’s smaller classes allow for more individual attention. Our faculty will help you define academic goals and create effective strategies to achieve them. They’ll know your name.

Eager to get involved in research or to study abroad? We can help you make it happen. Picture yourself catching sharks in the Gulf of Mexico for mercury research. Or delivering health care to communities in remote South American villages. Or teaching at-risk children how to read or play an instrument.

You will learn to look outside yourself as well, to understand your impact on the world. Programs like the University Colloquium are grounded in interdisciplinary learning and awareness of the natural world. Service-learning further connects students to the larger community off campus. Feed the hungry, mentor youth or choose from hundreds of other worthy causes. Students say these experiences change them for the better.

Our Career Development staff will help you translate your educational experiences into valuable job skills, providing assistance with career planning, interview and leadership skills, internships and, when the time comes, jobs. Among Florida universities, FGCU boasts one of the highest rates of full-time employment for graduates.

LEARNINGINVOLVES A LOT MORE THANHITTING THE BOOKS.

GET INVOLVED!

DON’T JUST SIT THERE

STUDYING –Classes, labs and textbooks all play important parts in the learning process. But at FGCU, so does the real world. Service-learning is a key component of the FGCU experience. Choose

a nonprofit organization – or more than one – that interests you and invest time and brainpower helping it accomplish its good works.

It might be a local preschool where you teach an at-risk child to play an instrument. Or a rescue group where you can help homeless cats and dogs find loving homes. Or

build houses for those who desperately need them.

In 2016-17, FGCU students contributed more than 250,000 hours of community service throughout Southwest Florida and beyond. This year, the total hours contributed since FGCU opened in 1997, surpassed 2.2 million.

Through the 80 hours of service-learning every entering freshman and sophomore must complete, you will discover strengths you didn’t know you had, learn about the world beyond the classroom and gain a sense of satisfaction. And, like students who came before you, you will be a different person from the one who started. You will be someone who now understands his or her place in the community and treasures how the act of giving back feels.

“It changed my life. What I have learned at FGCU has made me

a better person.” – Andres Machado, ‘14 Political Science

According to graduating seniors, the key to a full, rewarding college experience: “Get involved!“

How and with what depends on what moves you. With almost 15,000 students, FGCU is a lively, diverse community with more than 250 clubs and organizations in which you can find friends with similar interests. Whether it’s paintball or cosplay, Quidditch or cake baking, ice hockey, poetry or gender equality, there’s a club on campus for you.

Take part in the university’s 25 fraternities and sororities. Share your passion for social justice by joining an advocacy group or launching your own. Learn to grow food sustainably in our student-run Food Forest. Rent a stand up paddleboard at our campus beach, or master your 360-degree wakeboard spin on the lake. Check out a lecture, art show, concert, movie or other special event taking place throughout the year.

No one has more Eagle spirit than our Dirty Birds – members of the boisterous fan club for our 15 NCAA Division I athletic teams. They’re the flock of painted and creatively costumed bodies in the stands who “bleed green and blue” and #ProtectTheNest.

Want to explore the world off campus? You’re just 6 minutes from two sprawling shopping malls and 30 minutes from Gulf of Mexico beaches and the arts and entertainment districts of downtown Naples and Fort Myers.

LIVE WHERELEARN WHERE YOU LIVEFGCU’s residence halls offer up-to-date apartment-style living. You might have a lakefront beach or resort-style pool right outside your door. Video and arcade game rooms down the hall. A movie theater. Massage chairs. Even laundry facilities that will alert your phone or computer when your clothes are done.

South Village’s five residence halls offer suites with two or three single bedrooms and shared bathrooms. Some have kitchenettes and common living areas as well as the other amenities. They are designed to allow you to mingle and make friends.

They also offer the First Year Residential Experience, a program that helps you make a smooth transition to the independent living of college with sessions in time management, effective study techniques and other programs and fun events.

SoVi dining provides an all-you-care-to-eat option that includes vegetarian fare, an ice cream sundae bar and other crowd pleasers.

At North Lake Village, students enjoy apartment-style living next to our lake and beachfront. Each apartment accommodates four people with individual or two-person bedrooms, kitchen, living room and two baths.

Two miles north of campus, upperclassmen can live in three- or four-bedroom apartments in West Lake Village. A campus shuttle operates between the housing complex and campus.

APPLICATION DEADLINES

FGCU participates in federal and state financial aid programs. In addition to grants, loans and work study, the university offers almost $3 million in FGCU Foundation scholarships annually. FGCU’s Office of Admissions also offers tuition waivers and merit-based scholarships. The priority deadline for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is January 1.

SCHOLARSHIPS Yes, please!

In response to Gov. Rick Scott’s challenge to state-funded universities to ensure that graduates of top majors land jobs within a year of graduation, FGCU has launched the Soar in 4 program. Available to all incoming freshman students, regardless of major, it allows students who meet the program criteria to qualify for an award equal to the tuition paid for up to 30 credit hours earned during their freshman year. The award is good for out-of-pocket or loan payments. Learn more by visiting the website at fgcu.edu/soarin4.
