There are still parts of the players routine that are not going to change, but we made a small change in the walk through the Friday before the Tulane game. What else did you do?We had a scout bowl on Thursday, it was. So, we let the young guys get a lot of work in at the stadium with the veteran guys cheering them on in the student section and they had some fun doing that. Again, it was a great opportunity for the young guys to be evalu-ated and have some fun playing football.

They have a lot to prove and they are on a mission to get that done. It has been very exciting to be a part of it.

Are these things that you thought should be done all along or things you have held and wanted to do when you had your chance to be a head coach? Some of the things are things that I always knew I would do given the opportunity. But, there are things too that I thought our team needed. I thought we needed to reach out to the alumni, right now at this point. So to me, it was just things that I thought our team needed at this moment and time.

Do you think the head coach has to be out there?I think as the head coach it is your responsibility to keep the alumni connected, to keep boosters connected, to reach out to the community and get this community excited about Florida Atlantic football.

Was it being done before?I’m not looking at the past. I’m looking at what we are doing right now and what I think we need right now.

On the defensive backs and their strengthI think they understand the scheme, defensively. And, we have some good football players back there also. The scheme is allowing them to play aggressively. Those guys have worked hard. Those guys have improved, gotten better and they have been able to do the same thing over and over now for a year and a half, defensively back there. They understand the system and playing fast.

What are the safeties doing to allow the corners to play so well? The safeties are reading their keys and understanding the defense, allowing those guys to jump underneath routes and they are staying back. Depending on what the call is, it switches up, defensively, it allows those guys to go help with the run or stay back and help with the pass. I just think those guys are playing solid football back there—sound fundamental football and allow the corners to play aggressive.

On Damian ParmsBoy, I though going against him (Damian Parms) for a year and a half was really difficult. I thought he was really, really a tough foot-ball player back there, a really good football player back there. You don’t always hear his name. I don’t know that he gets all the credit that he deserves. He has been outstanding for us.

Is it difficult playing a team with nothing to lose?Absolutely, if you look at them on film you would never think their

record is what it is. They are a program that has a lot of tradition. They play better at home. They fly around, they play aggressive. They played Louisiana Tech very well, last week. I was really impressed with how hard they came out and played, regardless of record they came out and played extremely hard, all phases of the game. They were playing hard at the end of the game. Just two years ago this team was 11-2 and won a bowl game. They concern me.

On the slow starts and how are you trying to correct that?We have changed practice all of last week. We have started practice with an up-tempo drill offense versus defense, right into team just to help that scenario. We have to come out and play better football, certainly on the offensive side at the beginning of game. We changed up practice for that reason.

On Southern MissWe have told the defense they need to stop the run and you have to make them continue to drive the football. You have to try to make them play another play. We have to try to eliminate any kind of early momentum from them. Once they get some momentum they feed off of that like any college football team does. They get a momentum—they get a good crowd there. The crowd gets into it there. They really have a strong fan base there regardless of the record. We just have to jump out and have a good start. Another thing would be the big play on defense. They have created a turnover—I believe the stat is every game in the last two years they have created a turnover, defensively. Obviously, we have to hand the ball to the official on offense and not allow them the big momentum plays on that side of the ball as well.

Staffing ChangeWe have made a change. We moved Coach Luke Meadows to offensive coordinator. He will help with our staff and our unit organization. He will have a lot of the same input that he has had. I’m still going to call the plays on game day. Our offensive staff has done a tremendous job, for the last two years, on putting a plan together, on assisting with the plays that are called. We will continue in that way, like we have. But, Coach Meadows will have more duty. He will have more responsibil-ity with the game plan and I’m going to rely on him to get this offense ready.

FAU and AMFSFlorida Atlantic will honor the military at the New Mexico State game. As part of the celebration the American Moms for Soldiers will be on hand. The AMFS put together care pack-ages for soliders and have had two of its busiest months, send-ing more than 1,700 care packages in August and September. More than 60,000 troops remain in Afghanistan.Never let a soldier walk away from mail call with nothing. Volunteers attend many community events, inviting the public to sign banners with their personal messages of thanks and support. An annual Veterans Day concert salutes those who have served in the past. Financial donations received at these events are primarily used to cover mailing expenses of nearly $4,000 per month. Over those five years, America’s Moms has received con-sistent support from many South Florida organizations. The Girl Scouts and their supporters have contributed more than 35,000 boxes of cookies the past two years.

At FAUBrian Wright came to FAU in January of 2012 and was elevated to Interim Head Coach in October of 2013.

Wright accepted the added responsibil-ity as head coach much like he attacked the task of building an offensive coach-ing staff upon coming to FAU in 2012 and the task of converting FAU to an

up-tempo attack as opposed to the pro-style which had been the Owls mainstay since inception. To make his task more difficult, he would move to do so with just three-starting newcomers. By game two the starting quarterback position was solidified. Wright and the offen-sive staff made great strides by playing to the strengths of each individual and not forcing or sticking to one answer. It began with the quarterbacks. Senior QB Graham Wilbert improved his efficiency by 68% moving from 91.72 as a junior to 134.62. He reduced his interceptions to six after tossing double-digits in 2011. More importantly for the team, Wilbert spread the ball to eight different receivers for a score after tossing just seven touch-downs the previous season. Wright’s sys-tem allowed Wilbert to look for answers all over the field which opened the door for the senior to have career games with a season high 403 passing-yards against in-state rival FIU. He used the knowledge of the new system to hurt opponents with the short pass while also finding receiv-ers with a 50, 60 and 75 yard passes. Protecting the quarterback was key to the team’s success. FAU was T-104 nation-ally in sacks allowed prior to Wright’s arrival. They improved that rank by 21 spots in 2012 providing more options for the offense to work. The offense also lost a workhorse in the backfield with the graduation of Alfred Morris, who gradu-ated and turned in an outstanding rookie season with the NFL’s Washington Red-skins. To off-set this loss, Wright and the offense saw seven individuals carry the ball more than once and not one ended the season with negative yardage and as a unit, they tallied just 38 yards less than the previous season with a dominate running back. Much of that success can be attributed to fewer sacks eliminating the negative 179 yards lost by the previ-ous season’s quarterbacks. To exemplify the total improvement, FAU moved up 22 spots in the national ranking for total yards by improving its average yards per game by 102 yards per game. With one season and two spring seasons under their belts, FAU offense will draw upon the positives gained in 2012 and will begin its ascent as each recruiting class adds to the compliment of players who fit the system.

At Montana StateBrian Wright has spent his first two sea-sons at Montana State debunking the no-tion that the transition to a new offensive

system is inherently difficult. Wright’s two Bobcat offenses, led by dynamic quarterback DeNarius McGhee, averaged 440.6 yards per game, easily the most productive two-year span in school his-tory. After leading the Big Sky in scoring offense, total offense and passing offense in 2010, Wright’s unit topped the league in scoring offense and total offense in Big Sky games in 2011. Wright handed the reigns, in his first season at MSU, to redshirt freshman quarterback McGhee, who was named Big Sky Offensive Co-MVP, a first at MSU since 1984, and National Freshman of the Year by one organization.

At Youngstown StateWright came to Montana State after nine years at perennial FCS power Youngstown State University. Wright joined the Penguins’ staff in 2001 as quarterbacks coach, working also as offensive coordinator from 2005-09. Wright helped engineer record-setting offenses at Youngstown State, with the team winning two Gateway Conference championships and advancing to the 2006 FCS final four.

At WalshHe returned to Walsh where he first be-gan working with wide receivers (1998) and was then elevated to offensive coor-dinator and quarterbacks coach where he served from 1999-00.

At Youngstown StateWright served as an offensive GA at Youngstown State in 1997 where his primary responsibilities focused with the National Champion Youngstown Penguins’ receivers.

At WalshHe worked as a graduate assistant at Walsh University from 1995-96.

At WoosterWright began his coach career as a col-legiate senior, following a career-ending leg injury (1994).

The 6 Major Rule Changes for the 2013 Season1. Targeting Fouls: Automatic Ejection, Part I:Players will automatically be disqualified from the game for targeting fouls, including (Rule 9-1-3) targeting and initiating contact with the crown of the helmet, and (Rule 9-1-4) targeting and initiating contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, elbow or shoulder. The foul itself has not changed. These plays have been illegal for a number of years, but the penalty has been stiffened to include automatic ejection plus the 15-yard penalty. 2. Targeting Fouls: Automatic Ejection, Part II:A player is at great risk of being ejected from the game for a launch (leaving his feet to attack an opponent by an upward and forward thrust of the body to make contact in the head or neck area); a crouch (followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with contact at the head or neck area); leading (with helmet, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with contact at the head or neck area); or lowering (the head before attacking by initiating contact with the crown of the helmet).3. Offensive Blocking Below the Waist Rule:The rule establishes a zone for the offense that extends seven yards from the snapper toward each sideline and goes five yards into the defensive secondary and in the other direction all the way back to the offensive team’s end line. Within this zone, an offensive back who is stationary inside the tackle box and an offensive lineman inside the seven-yard zone may legally block below the waist until the ball has left the zone. Everyone else on the offensive team may legally block below the waist only if the block is clearly to the front of the opponent. This only-from-the-front rule also holds true for everyone on the offensive team once the ball has left the zone. In addition, no one on the offense is allowed to block below the waist if the block is directed toward his own end line.4. Expansion of the 10-Second Runoff Rule:In 2013, if a player is injured within the last minute of a half, and this is the only reason for stopping the clock, the opponent may choose to have 10 seconds subtracted from the game clock. The injured player’s team can preserve the 10 seconds by using a timeout.5. Player May Remain in the Game Via a Timeout After Helmet Comes Off:The rule requiring a player to leave the game for one down if his helmet comes off has been modified to allow a player to remain in the game if his team is granted a charged timeout to adjust the player’s helmet.6. Minimum Time to Spike the Ball for Another Play Set at 3 Seconds:Teams will need a minimum of three seconds from the referee’s signal to “spike” the ball to allow for another play at the end of a half. Teams must still execute the spike, but they will have a reasonable opportunity for another play. If the clock shows one or two seconds, they will only have enough time to run a play without first spiking the ball.

Founded in 1961, Florida Atlantic University is a comprehensive public university that is currently serving more than 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students at sites strategically located along the state’s southeastern coastline. Long known as an outstanding teaching institu-tion, FAU is undergoing rapid development as a center of cutting-edge research, particularly in the biomedical arena. This process has been accelerated by the University’s partnerships with four internationally known biomedical research organizations, the Scripps Research Institute, the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute, the Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies and the Max Planck Society. Through a well-developed network of partner campuses, FAU serves students at loca-tions and sites throughout its six-county service region in southeast Florida as well as through distance learning. FAU’s student body, which ranks as the most ethnically and culturally diverse in Florida’s State University System, includes men and women of both traditional and non-traditional age. Modern student hous-ing is available on the Boca Raton and Jupiter campuses, and all campuses offer attractive and varied dining facilities. The University com-munity is served by an excellent library system that has more than 3.6 million items, including books, periodicals, government documents, microforms, maps, media and other materials as well as a wealth of electronic resources, includ-ing more than 374,000 full-text electronic books and 18,000 full-text electronic journals, plus ac-cess to several hundred proprietary databases.. FAU’s 10 academically distinguished colleges are the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters, the College of Business, the College for Design and Social Inquiry, the College of Education, the College of Engineer-ing and Computer Science, the Graduate Col-lege, the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College, the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing and the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. The University currently offers more than 180 undergraduate and graduate degree programs and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Additionally, the Univer-sity holds membership in the National Associa-

Florida Atlantic University - Making Wavestion of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges and the Council of Graduate Schools.
