Florianópolis is the capital of Santa Catarina, a

state based in the south of Brazil.

Floripa, as it is called, is located in the east of the

state and it has a population of over 433

thousand people

The city is situated mainly in the island of Santa

Catarina (97,23%).

• Florianópolis is the second most populated city of Santa Catarina state. Only Joinville

has more people than Floripa.

• There are a lot of beautiful beaches in the island. They are good for swimming,

fishing and surfing.

Most of the tourists go to Floripa because of the

beaches, however it is important to mention some other

touristic places like:

Historical Centre Metropolitana Cathedral

Museum Victor Meirelles opened in

1952 in the house where the artist

Victor Meirelles was born. It is a

historic heritage.

Cruz e Sousa Palace used to be

called Pink Palace. It has a

similar colour to the cathedral

but it is much bigger than it.

It is located in 15th November

Square.

THE MOST WELL KNOWN SIGHTSEEING OF FLORIPA IS THE

FAMOUS HERCILIO LUZ BRIDGE THAT WAS FOUNDED IN 1926

AND IT WAS THE FIRST MOTORWAY CONECTION BETWEEN THE

ISLAND AND THE CONTINENT.

THE BEACHES

Daniela beach is peaceful and good for families withchildren. It is not too far from Jurerê beach, however it ismuch calmer than its neighbour.

Jurerê beach is the one with the most expensive anddesired villas. Jurerê Internacional is famous for itsbeach lounges and one of the most visited beaches inthe island.

Brava beach is one of the best beaches to surf. It is 37km away from downtown. It has many four floorbuildings. The next beach is Ingleses beach but there isno direct conection to it, so visitors must go back to thevillage to go to the next one.

40 KILOMETRES AWAY FROM DOWNTOWN AND IT HAS 2

KM OF EXTENSION.

ARE: TAINHA (FISH), OYSTER AND CASQUINHA DE

SIRI.

Tainha is more popular around March when the

fishing season starts. It can be cooked in the

oven, filled with prawn “farofa”, fried or on the grill.

As for the oysters, Floripa is responsible for 90% of

their sales in Brazil, being clearly much more than

any other city. It started being commercialized in

1984 after the fishing industry was in decrease and

then it became one of the main professional

activities of the island.

Casquinha de Siri emerged on the 17th century and

it is still popular nowadays.
