Floral Design

• Art used through history• Weddings, funerals, formal

events• Malls, airports, stores, etc

Page 5: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

9 Principles of Design

• balance• focal point• proportion• scale

• accent• repetition• rhythm • harmony• unity

Page 6: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Balance

• When flower size & container flow together & complement each other

• Arrangement has visual weight • Symmetrical • Formal arrangement

Page 9: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Focal Point

• Creates accent & interest • Created by use of unusual

flowers, groups of flowers or a large flower

• Must complete arrangement

Page 10: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Focal Point

Page 11: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Focal Point

Page 12: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Proportion

• To keep relative size, color & texture of the flowers to create a pleasing arrangement

• General rule: designs be at least 1 ½ times the height or width of container to create proper proportion

Page 13: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Proportion

• Points farthest from focal point should have buds.

• Flowers in full bloom used as focal point

Page 14: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Proportion

Page 15: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Scale

• Size of flowers, where arrangement is to be used, placement of arrangement & overall size of completed design

Page 16: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up
Page 17: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Accent

• To draw attention • Focal point to emphasize• Catches attention & enhances

design

Page 18: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Accent

Page 19: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Repitition

• To accentuate flowers & colors used in design

• Repeating use of material or color can be effective

Page 20: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Repitition

Page 21: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Rythm

• Sense of continuity among shapes, colors & textures

• “everything flows”

Page 22: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Rythm

Page 23: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Harmony

• When all parts flow together & give a total, completed look to arrangement

Page 24: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Harmony

Page 25: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Unity

• When all of the arrangement flows together & is not segmented

• Color, size & shape must complement each other

Designing a Circular Arrangement

• 1. select round container, 18 inch wire, shears, floral foam & sharp knife

Page 48: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Designing a Circular Arrangement

• 2. half block of floral foam, use wire to cut in half

• 3. place foam in container, set in bucket of water for 20 minutes to soak completely

Page 49: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Designing a Circular Arrangement

• 4. select bakers fern. Arrange to cover container & block of foam

• 5. choose flowers to create outline of arrangement

Page 50: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Designing a Circular Arrangement

• 6. establish circular arrangement at base using flower

• 7. turn design to place third flower & continue pattern

Page 51: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Designing a Circular Arrangement

• 8. arrange next flower to continue design & continue outline

• 9. arrange 2 flowers in between top & base

Page 52: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Designing a Circular Arrangement

• 10. add remaining flowers until circular arrangement is filled. Keep space between flowers

• 11. filler flowers (babys breath) placed in between flowers.

Warm-up

• What are the steps to designing a circular arangement?

Page 56: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Lesson Essential Question

• How do we create a corsage & boutonniere?

Page 57: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Use

• Special occassions–Dances–Proms–Holiday parties–Weddings

Page 58: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Corsages

• Should be created with individual in mind (size, colors, position, etc)

• Consultation with designer regarding flower type, color & ribbon to use

Page 59: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

How to tape • Tape applied by holding wired

flower between thumb & forefinger of one hand & apply tape to stem by twisting wired flower with other hand, pull tape tightly around stem

• Tape will become sticky as stretched

Page 60: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Corsages• Wire used to:

–Hold the flowers in correct position in design

–Make arranging easier–Prevent flower heads from

breaking off

Page 61: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Corsages• Wire used to:

–Reduce bulkiness–Make adding accessories easier–4 methods of wiring

Page 62: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Hook Method• Composite (daisylike) florets• Asters, black-eyed susans, daisy

chrysanthemums, etc• 1. cut stem to ½ inch of calyx, strip

any leaves

Page 63: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Hook Method• 2. insert end of 6 inch 22 gauge wire

in stem & up flower• 3. bend wire into a hood ¼ inch long• 4. slowly & gently pull wire back

through flower or until it catches in top of calyx & is not visible

Page 64: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Hook Method• 5. tape flower, starting high on calyx

& continue down stem

Page 65: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Piercing method• 1. remove stem ½ inch below calyx

& pierce calyx halfway down, pull wire through to ½ the length of wire

• 2. bend wire down on both sides, do not wrap

• 3. tape flower• Used for: roses, carnations, etc

Page 66: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Clutchwire method• Used for: gladiolus, camellias,

garden, football & spider mums• 1. take 8 inches of wire & fold in

half, place fold around calyx & stem of flower

Page 67: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Clutchwire method• 2. wrap one half around flowers

stem or calyx & around other half til wire is used

• 3. tape flower

Page 68: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Hairpin method• Used: tubular flowers, stephanotis• 1. take 8 inches of wire & bend in

half, place small wad of cotton in bend to support flower

• 2. insert wire down through floret, keep cotton in place

Page 69: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Hairpin method• 3. gently pull wire down until cotton

wad firmly fixed in the flower trumpet. Twist around calyx, tape floret.

Page 70: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Activity• Make single carnation corsage using

procedure on pg 570 in book.

Page 71: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Boutonnieres• Single flower or small bouquet worn

by men • Selected based on preference • Carnation, rose, chrysanthemum &

stephanotis usually used

Page 72: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Boutonnieres• 1. select flower• 2. use piercing method to wire

flower• 3. bend wire down next to stem• 4. select greenery to use on back,

use bakers fern

Page 73: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up

Boutonnieres• 5. tape bakers fern, rose stem &

wire together in one step• Mist the boutonniere & attach a pin

parallel to stem, & place in small bag or box

Page 74: Floral Design AHS Agriculture. SLM and KUD Warm up
