Designing a Circular Arrangement
• 1. select round container, 18 inch wire, shears, floral foam & sharp knife

• 2. half block of floral foam, use wire to cut in half
• 3. place foam in container, set in bucket of water for 20 minutes to soak completely

• 4. select bakers fern. Arrange to cover container & block of foam
• 5. choose flowers to create outline of arrangement

• 6. establish circular arrangement at base using flower
• 7. turn design to place third flower & continue pattern

• 9. arrange 2 flowers in between top & base

• What are the steps to designing a circular arangement?

• How do we create a corsage & boutonniere?
Use
• Special occassions–Dances–Proms–Holiday parties–Weddings
Corsages
• Should be created with individual in mind (size, colors, position, etc)
• Consultation with designer regarding flower type, color & ribbon to use
How to tape • Tape applied by holding wired
flower between thumb & forefinger of one hand & apply tape to stem by twisting wired flower with other hand, pull tape tightly around stem
• Tape will become sticky as stretched
Corsages• Wire used to:
–Hold the flowers in correct position in design
–Make arranging easier–Prevent flower heads from
breaking off

–Reduce bulkiness–Make adding accessories easier–4 methods of wiring
Hook Method• Composite (daisylike) florets• Asters, black-eyed susans, daisy
chrysanthemums, etc• 1. cut stem to ½ inch of calyx, strip
any leaves
Hook Method• 2. insert end of 6 inch 22 gauge wire
in stem & up flower• 3. bend wire into a hood ¼ inch long• 4. slowly & gently pull wire back
through flower or until it catches in top of calyx & is not visible
Hook Method• 5. tape flower, starting high on calyx
& continue down stem
Piercing method• 1. remove stem ½ inch below calyx
& pierce calyx halfway down, pull wire through to ½ the length of wire
• 2. bend wire down on both sides, do not wrap
• 3. tape flower• Used for: roses, carnations, etc
Clutchwire method• Used for: gladiolus, camellias,
garden, football & spider mums• 1. take 8 inches of wire & fold in
half, place fold around calyx & stem of flower
Clutchwire method• 2. wrap one half around flowers
stem or calyx & around other half til wire is used
• 3. tape flower
Hairpin method• Used: tubular flowers, stephanotis• 1. take 8 inches of wire & bend in
half, place small wad of cotton in bend to support flower
• 2. insert wire down through floret, keep cotton in place
Hairpin method• 3. gently pull wire down until cotton
wad firmly fixed in the flower trumpet. Twist around calyx, tape floret.
Activity• Make single carnation corsage using
procedure on pg 570 in book.
Boutonnieres• Single flower or small bouquet worn
by men • Selected based on preference • Carnation, rose, chrysanthemum &
stephanotis usually used
Boutonnieres• 1. select flower• 2. use piercing method to wire
flower• 3. bend wire down next to stem• 4. select greenery to use on back,
use bakers fern
Boutonnieres• 5. tape bakers fern, rose stem &
wire together in one step• Mist the boutonniere & attach a pin
parallel to stem, & place in small bag or box
